Some of the post from yesterday has me feeling nostalgic about my UK fandom. I became a UK fan and a Duke hater on the same day in November of 1979.
I had just turned 8 years old and had just discovered the game of basketball. I was outside shooting on a very makeshift basketball goal that was nailed to a tree in the front yard. I go in for a little break and our 26 inch, state of the art Curtis Mathis entertainment center (It had AM/FM, 8 track and a record player on it) just happens to be on the UK/Duke game. It was the inaugural Tip Off Classic, as I have researched the game. I had no prior knowledge of UK basketball or anything like that. I vaguely remember my dad watching them.
I sat there glued to the TV rooting for UK like crazy. We wind up losing in OT and I cried like a baby. Fast forward to March of 1980 and we lose by 1 point to Duke at Rupp in the NCAA tournament. The infamous Kyle Macy Mono game.
I’ve been hooked on UK ever since and it seemed to me that it chose me instead of me choosing it, based on my reaction to that first game.
Most UK fan’s hatred of Duke dates back to 92, but mine dates way back to that 79-80 season watching us lose twice to them.
UK FB came a little later and strictly through Cawood’s call on the radio. 99.1 WCBL out of Benton. Ransdell, Adams,Calhoun, Joker, etc. It was rare to catch a UK FB game on TV in Western Ky and to me at the time, Lexington seemed like a million miles away. Leonard’s Losers on the radio was a great primer to get you ready for a Saturday of College FB back then.
I didn’t catch my first live UK basketball game until 86 and FB game in 93, when a HS classmate of mine, Pookie Jones was the starting QB.
I admittedly can only make a game or two a year in person. UK-Duke in ATL last season was awesome as was Oweh’s heroics against OU in the SEC tournament. Saw us get blitzed by Alabama. 3 games is a banner year for me.
My best live FB memory besides being there for the win over Penn St in the Citrus Bowl was being at the Mizzou game in Columbia earlier that season. My daughter had free tickets through the company that she worked for in KC and we sat at the top on the Mizzou side. The most UNUK FB ending of all time! Conrad with the walk off. Lynn Bowden and Josh Allen

I tell myself that being a fan and allowing ballgames between 18-22 year olds shouldn’t have that big of an affect on me, but man if it’s in you, it’s in you and although I don’t cry outwardly (inwardly maybe) I’ve still got the same passion for it as I did the first time I caught the bug as an 8 year old.
Sorry so long, but it’s a slow day. GO CATS!!
