Some pre-MSU hot takes:
- I think our ceiling is higher with Aberdeen as our lead guard than with Lowe. I guess I'm old fashioned, but I prefer my PG to be able to either a. shoot or b. defend (ideally both). Lowe is a better playmaker, obviously, but I don't worry so much about playmaking with a Pope offense as I do those other things.
The giant caveat of course is that we've barely seen Lowe play, so maybe I'm underselling his skill at those two things.. but the stats would back up the eye test on this one.
- Agree with those who have said that they'd like to see more Jelavic. I have to admit this was a bit of a surprise to me, but he seems to know how to play basketball, which is my favorite skill in a basketball player. I'm also not sure that he's not our best on-ball defender.
- Really undersold last year was the luxury of being able to have Williams share in the ball-handling duties and reliably bring the ball up the court and initiate offense, as well as operate as a secondary playmaking offensive hub. We need to find that for this team, especially with Lowe out. I do not think Chandler is the long-term answer there, though surely he will continue to improve in that domain.
Maybe it'll be Jelavic? Oweh can obviously do it some, though passing is arguably the weakest part of his game. Garrison does his best, but it's a roller coaster.
- I'm not worried about Oweh yet. Although things are likely to be tougher for him this year than they have been in the past, I still think his main limitations right now have been mental, not physical. Lots of times he's spotting up in the corner like he's a knockdown shooter instead of cutting to the basket for backdoors/lobs... and that's just not his game. He will break out eventually.
Also, his defense has been frankly terrible, which weirdly gives me more confidence that he'll be fine once he gets locked in.
- This website sucks. I've had to close 7 ads so far in order to complete this post.
- Still think it's not discussed enough how Quaintance will benefit this team on both ends. Hard to really gauge them until he plays. I think he will immediately be our best player in terms of on-court impact, as he potentially solves a lot of problems (rim protection, playmaking, lineup combos, etc.)
- on paper, we match up well with Michigan State. They might be one of the the worst shooting teams I've ever seen. They defend, rebound their bricks, and grind you. If we rebound and don't turn the ball over, we should win. But I'll be honest: I'm a bit worried about this one. Seems like people have forgotten already, but we got absolutely blown out at home by a similar team in Georgetown.
And if you look at our upcoming schedule, combined with some of the early-season weirdness... I think this is a fairly important game for us.
