The way I understand it is they're not a division 1 football conference but they are one in the same as the SEC in basketball. Davidson is a good example of a more successful program in a similar situation. It's just getting the admissions to allow a kid with a 20 on his ACT (or whatever the SAT equivalent is) to go to their school. I know average scores and GPA's are admitted for special conditions as I know someone who went there for rowing who would have barely received an academic scholarship to MSU.

... which is why I don't believe the excuse Vanderbilt uses that their academic standards are too high to admit good football players. They can, they would... they just can't get a Quay Evans to even consider them as a possibility. Franklin is shedding some light on that. It'll be more evident after this recruiting class he signs with 2+ ESPN 150 prospects that qualify by NCAA standards but not top 20 school standards.
