I know I've seen threads on here in the past but have forgotten the food choices. Lil Rays has always been one of favorites along with Capt Al's. Any other suggestions? Thanks

We were at Beau Rivage a while back and decided we wanted to eat about eleven one night, so we struck out to find a "quirky little place" - wife's idea. We drove for about an hour and wound up at a small bistro called Waffle House.

Was fine with me, cause I like their patty melt, but was not exactly the wife's idea of fine dining.

There is a place toward Bay St Louis, about three blocks off the beach. Should be enough to get you there.

Oh - do they have a What-A-Burger? They hva eone in Mobile and I like them at night. Meridian is loser city for dining out - we have no What-A-Burger here.

McElroy's right across the Ocean Springs Bridge for fine seafood. Lil' Ray's for home coast style (I like Long Beach LR better than Gulfport).

That seafood restaraunt on the beach by Rodenberg is good though a bit pricey. They have a patio that overlooks the beach.

Kim Long on Division near Cailivet for Vietnmemse. Also, Yes Noodle in D'Iberville is excellent.

I like the sushi at Sakura - Pass Road and Eisenhower (behind the mall).

Brooklyn Pizza by the slice is awesome (Courthouse and Pass in Gulfport).

The Shed BBQ has live music every Friday and Saturday. A lot of fun to be had there (Exit 57). Not sure about the one in Gulfport. Speaking of bbq, Anjacs really is good. It's not just a rumor.

Of course you're probaly looking for fine places like Vrazel's but I also like Mugshots for fun and food (across from Edgewater Mall).

These places are mostly not fine dining atmospheres. I'm basing it on the food.

I thought Captain Al was down a notch last time there, but they've been changing a bit and have probably got it back together by now.

You're picking a rough weekend because of a Spring Break event. I'll personally be at French Quarter Festival in New Orleans. 90 restaraunts will have food booths there. I'll do a lot of sampling.

The Biloxi Police have a traffic plan, and that means I'll visit the beach some other time.

casual dress code but fine dining. They don't have a liquor license, so take your favorite jug of wine. We have eaten there for years and have never had a bad experience. Excellent food and service.

It really was a travesty they failed to bring the brewery back on line. GREAT BEER!! Hurricane Boch, Steelhead Stout, Ruby Red Lager, and even the Biloxi Blonde.

Sorry, my intent was not to change the subject. All the place's I know have been listed.

Mary Mahoney's, Chimney's,French Charlie's, and Vrazel's are all good if you want something nicer (can still go pretty casual at all of them though). The nice restaraunts at thecasino's are actuallygenerally pretty good if a little overpriced, but unless you are just interested inthe convenience of being in the casino, Iwould do somethingdifferent.

Pheonecia (OS), Pasta Italia (Gulfport), and Chef Scott (OS, sushi) are all good, cheaper ($15-25 per person)places that are also brownbag. TheSchooner (Biloxi) also, although it's heavy on friedfood. HalfShell in downtown Gulfport is another good one that's relatively cheap.

If you want a local hole in the wall, whoever mentioned Brooklyn's is right on, and Taranto'sin Woolmarket is good also. Shady's (Thai) and Mr. Greek (both Biloxi) are two good ethnic places. If you want to eat outside looking over the water, I would do Shaggy's over Whitecap.

If there really is a spring break event going on, I would get on I-110 to get everywhere and might would try to stick to Bay St. Louis or Ocean Springs.

I've eaten there several times and the experience has ranged from average to awful. If you're spending a lot of time down there and don't want to hit the same restaurants every week, McElroy's is OK for a change of pace.

A couple of people have mentioned the Phoenicia. Excellent choice for Greek food. Don't know if Anthony's Under the Oaks is still open, but it used to be outstanding fine dining, with a beautiful view of the bayou. Best time to go is just before sunset.

If you are in the mood for a steak, the casino's are quite good. BR Prime is probably the best at the Beau, but Ruth Chris at the Hard Rock and 32 at the IP are also very good.

I know we've done Chicago, Vegas, New York, MS Gulf Coast, etc. It would be good reference material.

Pheonecia (OS), Pasta Italia (Gulfport)(anything and it's authentic...don't think Olive Garden and take your own wine but if you're coming to the coast why go get italian), and Chef Scott (OS, sushi) are all good, cheaper ($15-25 per person)places that are also brownbag. i'll add, best shrimp poboy on the coast is at Desportes in downtown biloxi...great for lunch. for dinner, #1 is the stuffed snapper at Mary Mahoney's followed closely by Vrazel's. Best scallops you'll ever have at Kenny Ward's across from Phoenicia in Ocean Springs.

Edited to add, "Desportes" (per local tongue) is Desporte & Sons Seafood on Division St. in Biloxi.

Half Shell Oyster House in Gulfport, its just up from Hwy 90 on 49 (Maybe a block, just across from the Post Office). Very good, but fairly new. Oysters are amazing and so is the fried asparagus.

...due to family issues, mother going into a nursing home, I have been to Gulfport almost once each week for the last 2 months. I have eaten at Capt. Al's at least once each time. One of Capt. Al's long time waitresses, Stacey, has become a manager there. She created the recipe for Al's spicey mustard dressing and makes all the Key Lime Pies. Capt. Al's son, Albert, has taken over most of the grilling duties. I have taken to asking for more spicing of steaks, because Albert doesn't put enough on. Capt. Al's also used to just have a few menu items, ribeyes and shrimp, but has expanded the menu significantly. The ribeye steaks and the fried shrimp are still the favorites, but they have added Dungeness Crab, which is either great or cooked too long.

I also go to the Red Zone in Diamondhead. The guy that owns it, John, is a diehard Mississippi State fan and is really friendly to folks wearing the maroon and white. Close by, on Hwy 90, just across the Bay Bridge is Trapani's, which is a New Orleans style seafood house. It has WONDERFUL fresh speckled trout with crawfish ettoufee, but you have to be there when the specks are fresh caught.

Mickey McKelroy graduated from high school with me, and McKelroy's, just across the Hwy 90 bridge in Ocean Springs, is good for fried seafood. It is a typical coast seafood house. His original seafood house at the Biloxi Harbor was destroyed by Katrina, but he is trying to rebuild it and expand it.

One of the best restaurants in Ocean Springs is Jocelyn's, in an old house, painted mostly pink, on Hwy 90, about 2 miles west of downtown. Reservations are recommended. There are more good restaurants in Ocean Springs than anywhere on the coast. The Phoenicia on Government is great. The Mediterannio is also excellent.

The Mahoney's are also friends, and Mary Mahoney's is the class of classic "coast food," with some excellent creole dishes and an expansive menu. It is across from the Beau about one block.

Can't believe no one mentioned Anthony's Fine Dining (think it's still open) or Aunt Jenny's Catfish (I know it's still open). Both are great and are right next to each other close to the Ocean Springs/Biloxi bridge.

Lil' Ray's is the best Po-boy place on the coast for sure.

If you want something fun, open air, and a great bar feel go to Shaggy's on the beach in Pass Christian harbor. A little drive from the beau, but worth the 20 minutes down there.

The "new" Ricky's reopened in Bay St. Louis. Good food, but you better bring some major moolah.

The Beau Rivage Buffett is pretty good. Lobsters!

I prefer more "traditional" sushi so Samurai on 49 has Fat Sumo beat any day.

Add to the list:
Shady's in Biloxi or Ocean Springs
White Cap in Gulfport (Same people as Aunt Jenny's)

Some personal favorites:
Those listed above
Chimneys
Trapanis
Phoenicias
Pasta Italia in Gulfport
Lil Rays for Steamed Royal Reds (If you have to ask what it is, just go ahead and order it)
Hucks in Gautier for a hole-in-the-wall burger place

when we come back to the coast we HAVE to eat at B. B.s for lunch. It's a small restaurant in Ocean Springs with great poboys. We have to have dinner at both Mary Mahoney's (start with the Presidential Platter - not on the menu I don't think).
We generally eat breakfast at the IP where we stay. We also like McElroy's (good fried seafood and good boiled shrimp). I like the Schooner in Biloxi better than my wife, but we generally eat there.

She like's Ricky's in Bay St. Louis - I think it's a little steep for what's there. 32 at the IP is excellent also, but pricey.

Have fun.

Samurai when I'm down next, despite the fact that you like the White Cap ---eww. Actually I'm a sashimi guy and Fat Sumo had some blue fin tuna in, and also aking salmon (New Zealand, matbe?) that was fantastic. It was a few months ago, so maybe I caught it on a good day.

West End at the far west end (duh) of Waveland is fantastic if you're up for a drive and they have been really friendly to the Hancock County alumni chapter. Also second the Chef Scott's rec. For other sushi options, both Koi Sushi and Samurai on Hwy 49 south of I-10 are good.

I like Salute on Hwy 90 a little bit east of Hwy 49--if it's still open. Good mesh of Italian and seafood but it might be hard to get to thanks to the spring break festivities at the Coliseum this weekend.
