Please explain. I will admit I did not follow Indiana last year or years prior but it seems they came out of nowhere.

What was their recruiting ranking coming into this year?

Indiana doesn’t have one offensive player thats younger than 21 years old. They have more 6 year players than underclassmen. Average age of the team is 23 years old. They expanded the BYU blueprint but didn't limit it to mormans only.

Here are Indiana’s starters and what year of college football they’re in:

Offense
- Mendoza Year 4
- Hemby Year 5
- Black Year 6
- Nowakowski Year 6
- Sarratt Year 4
- Becker Year 2
- Cooper Year 4
- Evans Year 4
- Smith Year 4
- Lynch Year 4
- Michalski Year 5
- Coogan Year 5
- Benson Year 6

Defense:
- Kamara Year 5
- Daley Year 4
- Tucker Year 4
- Landino Year 2
- Hardy Year 2
- Fisher Year 4
- Jones Year 4
- Ferrell Year 3
- Sharpe Year 4
- Ponds Year 3
- Moore Year 6

Pretty good strategy. Worked a couple years ago for a coach in basketball(old brain working tonight can't remember who). Cignetti knows life experiences make you a bit calmer when things get a bit stressful. Also he just stands there and never shows any emotion( that's the part he picked up from Saban).

Did you see the drive where they scored 42? A few plays before the score Mendoza outran everyone and fumbled the ball 25 yards down the field. The center jumped on the fumble. Why was he there? He had no reason to be running down the field. Hustle. And because he hustled he covered the fumble. The first down stood and they scored later. That’s coaching and why they are so good.

Cignetti was 52-9 at JMU.
Also, all those experienced players are mostly 3 stars.
Watch them play. They all execute at a high level. They are extremely well coached.

(Side note: Cignetti was at the top of my wish list when we hired Lebby.)
make no mistake, our boosters would have run Cig off and made his life miserable. Indiana has smart boosters/leadership

I was on the phone with my uncle (retired FB coach) and he said the exact same thing. Nobody else would have lineman chasing that play that far downfield but that's indicative of their culture as a result of Cignetti. Small things matter. They're just so precise and as the announcers keep saying "surgical". It's amazing but I love to watch them. They could become my number 2 team if I had to have one.

Cignetti is a high achiever and Marc Cuban is financing their program.
They are recruiting at our level. Cuban buying a bunch of players isn’t why they are good. I mean maybe he is the one actually buying them but he’s not outspending other teams. Cignetti is either cheating some way that no one has found out about or he is literally the best coach who has ever lived. What he is doing with players rated that low is unheard of and almost unbelievable. To just beat the dog sh*t out of everyone with Mississippi State level talent is bizzaro world.

Yes it’s coaching, but I’d say even more so it’s the innate quality of that type of player that coach purposely recruits.

Do you have a side team?

This game just made his all time college coaching record 145-37. He’s won everywhere he’s been. Some guys are just good coaches and it doesn’t matter where they’re at. How it took him this long to get a head gig at this level is what’s crazy.

You must have watched a different Saban than I did.

Indiana is very physical and high football IQ

They get after you on Defense and don’t beat themselves.

pretty much the exact opposite of us.

People who say it’s all about the money should remember it’s 65% money and 35% having the right staff and players
In this era, though, the money is critical to getting the “right” players.

We used to have a center (hell, an entire OL) that played that way. I believe the year was 2014…

Can it be argued that a 2 or 3 star player is typically more coachable than 5-star and 4-star ones, who in many cases are pre-madonnas? Mullen did that, especially with quarterbacks.

Plus, in Indiana's situation and BYU's to a lesser extent, the players are a lot more mature than the typical 18-21 year old.

Big question will be can he sustain the success. His history as a head coach seems to indicate he can but with the portal the way it is only time will tell.

People see 3 star recruit next to his player and think they have ****** talent. They were 3 stars six years ago and progressed over time and with experience. Because they chose Indiana and not bigger schools when they transferred they did not get the extra star- we know that all too well.

This but I don't think that it's cheating. It's evaluating.

I don't think Miami can beat them, but Miami is going to hit them harder than they have been hit all season.

Yes but he's pulling 3* older experience like talent like you said. That's the difference. We need to dive into who is evaluating all these guys and take note. Obviously Cig is saying yes or no but someone is finding them.

They are an extremely experienced team and are well coached. You know why I'm not excited about getting a highly recruited OL from Arkansas that has four years eligibility? Because 1. We don't have the coaching staff that can develop players and 2. That's not how you win anymore.

We need to be looking for G5 players who have 80+ starts. Ole Miss just made the semifinals with an experienced QB from a Division II school.

Experience + Coaching = winning in this era (Indiana)
Coaching + Talent = being competitive in this era (Alabama)
Coaching + No Talent = showing competence on the field (Southern Miss)
Talent + Bad Coaching = making a second tier bowl game (Mississippi State)
No Talent + Bad Coaching = Massachusetts

He made his players watch the movie Rudy until he saw improvements during practice and after practice.
