I’ve been as critical as anyone and still don’t think it’s fair to chase him out, IF Pike would be willing to cut his minutes and give him a role off of the bench.

Someone said it yesterday but he can absolutely play a role next year as a corner 3 threat with some physicality mixed in to wear down defenses. Unfortunately, we’re treating him like a 35 MPG player who can score from different levels all over the floor, and it just hasn’t been the case on a regular basis.

But going into next year with something like Simpson, Spencer, Griffiths/Mag, Mag/Hyatt, Cliff, with Paul and Hyatt/Griffiths and maybe a transfer off the bench? I’d sign up for that.

I don't know what makes some think that Simpson can handle the point. Let's see......there was the PSU game and........... ?

Great question that I’m not sure will ever be answered. I don’t know that he would, but I think he probably comes back and stays at around 30 MPG personally, which would make all of this irrelevant.

Still so many variables though. Maybe he lights it up on Sunday and has a couple more solid games after. Maybe he implodes, we lose out and Simpson comes on strong. Guess we’ll have an idea soon enough.

PSU and Indiana mostly, but I think most of it is situational. Paul hasn’t been getting it done lately which naturally causes people (including me) to want some changes. In game, we’ve had times where a quick/fast player who can make free throws would be valuable (see last night).

Nobody can say for sure he’s ready to run the point (and on a full-time basis, he’s probably not), but the minutes shouldn’t be 35 for Paul and 13 for Derek coming off of that PSU game, especially when we have specific use cases for him.

These people build up these players in their mind to be something they’re not and then when these players fall short of their impossible standards they throw the player in the trash. Psychotic behavior.

I almost always like your take and this one was after that mess but this a pretty bad look. Not so cool.

If there is blame it is on Pike not Caleb for not putting pressure in the back court. Also , not sure why Pike played so much zone as the only way Minnesota could have beat us or come back from 10 down was by hitting 3’s. Battle ‘s 3 threes in the last minute were on Hyatt and on Cam 2x. I think we were in zone. Pike should have been in man the last few minutes but definitely the last minute as Caleb would have been glued to Battle and denied him the ball and he wouldn’t have hit the first , second or third 3 as he was the only player capable of coming back from 10 down in a minute 15 seconds.
Caleb not being being clutch at the foul line is fair. But that happens all the time to even 90% foul shooters. Cam missed one with 35 seconds after making 5 in a row. MSU was up 12 on Iowa with a minute to go just last week. Hoggard hot 7 foul shots on a row but besides Iowa hitting 5 threes( MSU ‘s defensive collapse ) , he missed the last one with 10 seconds left and Sandfort hits the 3 to tie. Then MSU lost in OT. It happens a ton.
Anyone looking to blame because that is what people do , can look at Paul’s last minute and you will find your answer. Sprinkle some curious decision by Pike in the last minute. Those barking blame on Caleb can get out of here for what he does for our team that your eyes do not allow you to see .

Paul has had a great career here at RU but it has been madingly inconsistent
He literally carried us through a 5 game stretch last year to get us to the NCAAs
He is talented but in a way that he doesn't fit the traditional roles assumed at the 1,2&3
He doesn't shoot well enough to be a true 3 and makes too many fundamentally bad decisions with the ball at the point
I would love to see him back but as a support player as opposed to a go to type of guy
Hopelly an insurance policy for a true point and high post 3 to change things up

Derek Simpson is the Rutgers basketball version of an NFL backup QB. He’s done nothing to demonstrate that he’s capable of being a winning starting QB but everyone’s convinced that he’s the answer because they’ve had it with starter. He’s had two “good” games that people have used to anoint him, both of which he took a million shots and missed most of them but people only remember the makes. I don’t know what’s happened to Mulcahy unless just every opponent has figured him out at the same time after 3 1/2 seasons of college ball. But stop it with the nonsense that Simpson is the answer. He rarely looks for a teammate, shoots just about every time he can regardless of whether it’s a good shot and misses most of them. Haven’t seen anything on defense. We need Paul to somehow get it together. Simpson is not the answer.

PM has had a bad stretch...we have all seen it. He has done so many things for this program and been very clutch in certain situation(NW last year and MSU this year) to help us win games. One game Simpson comes in to drive a comeback against PSU and people are ready tp throw him off the bus. What as Simpson's shooting % prior to PSU game?

I hope @SBP sits next to me on Sunday because he wont need to worry about watching the game as it would be lights out for him before tip off. Go find another team to root for loser

Paul is an enigma, but the comment that he should be at Monmouth is laughable. With that said, I wonder if pike is fitting a square peg to a round hole with him at point guard. Would love to see a lineup next season that is: transfer traditional pg, spencer, mulcahy, mag, and omoruyi with Hyatt, Griffiths, and simpson off the bench.

It’s not Paul’s fault. It’s Pike. You guys are too harsh on Paul. This is coming from someone who is NOT a PM fan.

Paul was angry after the game. Put his hands in the neck of his jersey and tore it about 1/4 of the way down. Not sure if he was embarassed or thought he'd be in trouble but he almost immediately grabbed the rip with his left hand and didn't let go.

the Northwestern coach pulled him over when he was heading to the Alma Mater line and they had some conversation back and forth.

Paul would be an incredible 4th/5th option on a very good team. Absolute wrong fit here right now as we are asking him to do things way out of his comfort zone and ability. Not really a leader although he seems to try sometimes. He’s the guy will do the dirty work and sneak up on people while occasionally filling a stat sheet with points rebounds, assists, fouls, and some bruises. He’s not a PG and he’s not really a scorer. At one time he was a “jack of all trades” “master of none” kind of player. However, if he’s not attempting to shoot and turning the ball over, it’s really 5 on 4. Teams have figured him out and moving him up in the pecking order of scoring options has exposed and frustrated him even further..

I’m sitting this one out because I don’t want to beat a dead horse.

Agreed with you 100%. I will add that he is not playing up to his potential. He has regressed on his shot and finishing around the basket. You can see the confidence is gone on his shot. Wonder if Ds are figuring out his Euro/YMCA moves.

PM needs time away from the game at the end of the season to see if he has that burning desire to be great, increasing his speed, improving his shot, getting players to move the ball side to side, etc. I think he can be a valuable contributor next year, but he needs to work really hard to overcome shortcomings.

He’s hurt right now. This is a horrible take. When he is healthy he can dominate. Look at last year. When Rutgers beat all those ranked teams in a row, Paul was one of the best players in the big ten. That’s coming from the BTN crew.
