This blew me away. Is football really the only important thing at our University? Hopefully this is an illustration of a major difference between Mississippi State and UM.

I got calls from the Business School and Pharmacy this week
________________________________________
asking for me to donate $250 dollars to the schools. I graduated from business and my wife has a Dr. of Pharm. As respectfully as I could, I told her that I would love to donate but would not because I don't agree with the direction or leadership of the university. And, as soon as Dr. Jones fired Pete I would call her back and donate the money. She assured me that the donation is 100% separate from athletics, and I said, "I'm sure it is, but I'm also sure the school is being run by the same leader that is over the AD as well. Therefore, I don't trust the decisions that would be made with my money until I see that tough decisions can be made."

I realize $500 is not a lot of money to most of you, but it's the principle of the thing. I don't know any other way to command change other than doing something like this, and I felt terrible doing it.

Maybe Dr. Jones will see this.

that's so sad, you're helping Nutt kill our university.

It's about mismanagement

Or maybe it is someone above Nutt that is helping it. Take your

pick. The total state of our athletic dept and its failures ain't only on Nutt unless he has hired the other coaches. Maybe I just thought he was responsible for the football program, but now he is responsible for all the sports. Wow.

I told a caller from the business school the same thing

and told him to be sure he let his superior know. I will not give another dime unless the chancellor grows a pair and does what has long been needed to be done. I think he needs to go along with Boone, though. He is an incompetent chancellor. We need to get rid of all the dead weight.

How else can people voice their displeasure since nobody seems to listen anymore in administration? Should everyone just shut up and keep sending your money, buy tickets, and not voice your displeasure with the results?

I am not trying to be a smartaleck, but what would you suggest to improve the current situation? I am seriously asking for your opinion on how folks should handle this. I am not trying to blast you and will not blast you for your opinion when you provide a response. I am just curious as to some legit suggestions.

Once you graduate or start donating (or both) the only thing the University cares about is your money (at least in recent times). I've called the Foundation and politely given a similar comment. No need to be ugly - just a simple comment and request that the basis for the call be brought to the attention of management.

Stop buying tix, don't goto games, etc, but with holding money from schools is beyond stupid. Opposite to popular belief, the school supports the athletic dept financially, not the other way around. They need the money. The university is MUCH bigger than football, I know some people don't believe that. I doubt there will be many who with hold serious donations from individual colleges, bc most of those that do donate serious money have a love for that school/field and realize there are more important things in life than football w/l records.

I'm going to call your hand on that one. The school pays just a fraction of the athletic dept budget and even less on the contruction, renovation, etc of building facilities and structures. The biggest percentage is through private donations, ie, the UMAA Foundation and the monies generated through the SEC partnership.

Sent RK an email about it too. The last statement I receive last month was returned with some choice words including "you must be out of your minds" and a few others about the bear. No more tix or donations until I see something better that this crap.

I guess I can kind of...understand where they're coming from, but that still seems foolish to me. If you want the AD to see your displeasure in the states of athletics, stop sending your money to that department. I don't think the whole school should have to suffer for that.

Thats my point. Don't give to the Bulldog Club, but not giving to your school?? A lot of my success in life is because of the education I received at MSU. I'm not going to punish the academic side because of the success or failure of the football players.

Alums don't have a vote in things. We don't hire and fire employees. We didn't choose Keenum, Byrne, or Stricklin. We don't hire and fire football coaches. The way we vote is with our voice and our money. Alums didn't hire Keenum, but many made their voice heard that he was our choice. We didn't fire Croom, but made our voice heard with our attendance (or lack thereof), emails, etc. Giving, or lack of giving, is one way that alums can voice their opinion. This individual's decision to mix athletics with academics may be off-base, but it is his decision.

then there are probably some that didn't give to the academic side because no one would fire Templeton.

And any President that doesn't see athletics as one of his biggest marketing/advertising tools is ignorant.

You see some presidents/chancellors that seem to give athletics the "necessary evil" treatment, and that's just stupid. Whether it's right or not in their eyes, good athletics programs not only help attract new students in many cases, but they also are the primary reason why alums make it back to the university to see the campus.

Alums aren't coming to Oxford nearly as often to hear guest academic speakers as they are to see Ole Miss and 'insert opponent here' play in whatever major sport. It stands to reason that the more people you get to campus and the more often they come back, the more likely they are to donate to your projects, both athletic and academic.

I know that I'm more likely to donate to a project from my academic department if I know that 7 fall Saturdays plus baseball and basketball weekends I will get to see progress on the project and/or the end result.

Well I guess that answers my question. I watch and pull as hard as I can for every State football game, but during the Croom years, I didn't stop donating to the academic side. It never crossed my mind actually.

Union General Winfield Scott stepped down as general in chief citing failing health. George B. McClellan was elevated to the position. Thus starting a long line of Union Generals who got their asses whipped by Lee.
