I know we won't but I truly believe we should pass on the NIT

Exactly

The arrogance about this program is astounding

It’s like we’ve been a blue blood for the past 50 years and won multiple national championships

We’ve literally been good for 3 1/2 years.

Prior to that, we were terrible for the majority of 30 years… and now we’re too good for the NIT?
Very well said.

There is zero chance that Rutgers would no accept an NIT and at least 10 NIT teams will be better than a third of the NCAA field. The issue is motivation.UNC or Michigan could run through the NIT field,or just as easily lose to a Princeton,
There was also zero chance RU wouldn't not make the NCAA tournament.

If Caleb, Paul and Cliff are all hurt (I am not sure) why would Rutgers play unless the team really wanted to.

Because Caleb, Paul and Cliff are not the entire team. Yes, they’re valuable, but I would love to see the young guys get some run and see what they have. You play compete and win

There’s 12 scholarship players on the team. I don’t care if the starting lineup is Miller, wolf, Oscar, Simpson, and dean, you go with what you have any play your damnedest.

You play to compete, as you’re invited to a postseason tournament the correct thing to do would be to accept the bid and play your hardest to try to win the whole thing.

Is it OK for schools to turn down CBI, CIT or whatever the other postseason tournaments are called?

If my guys are hurt and players dont want to play I sit back Sunday night at 7PM and wait for a team to hopefully back out and once they do I join them.

(ETA: I am agreeing with you 110%)

Maryland had a minor run of going to NITs just 4-5 years after winning the championship (recruiting dropped off a cliff; we learned more about why that was in later years). I can't really understand why teams say NO (which is very rare, as others have said). It isn't a good look for anybody, let alone for a program on the rise like Rutgers...

Play with half a healthy team to get blown out?
What does that accomplish?

Let the players decide. May want to atone for their offensive sins before ending the year

Were they rebuilding years?

We were a virtual NCAA lock with visions of a 3 or 4 seed in the middle of the year. This would be a team that had an epic collapse. Totally different.

Next year if we were 17-15 (8-12) and had an up and down year in a rebuilding year that would be a completely different story.

Almost all schools accept unless injuries come into play which could be a possibility with Rutgers
Correct. And there's no way Pike is not going to try and win with less than what he considers his best linep

I don't think anybody was worrying about describing the seasons, but the fact is that they were just a few years removed from two final fours, and even shorter than that to top 20 finishes.

Many in the fanbase may have considered those Maryland teams to be "NCAA locks" or "3 or 4 seed", but that doesn't mean they really were, and I think the same applies to Rutgers 2023. I remember a post on this board in January about how a 15-5 record in-conference was "a stone cold lock," or something along those lines (I believe it was in a thread about catching up to Purdue in the standings). Good to be a positive-thinking fan, but not very realistic.

No big deal, but I don't think opting out because they lost a player to injury is a good look for your program right now. I'm just a message board schlub, though...

Who says we have to get blown out? It’s on the coaches to motivate and the players to have pride.

If we’re playing front of 2500 people and losing to a team with equal talent by 35 points, that’s an indictment on the program and the coaching staff, as well as the current group of players.

I will take my chances and not worried about that as if that is the case, we will weed out the bad apples and move forward.

I'd definitely still watch the NIT but this team seems to be shot mentally and physically

Still hoping to get lucky against Michigan though!

Getting knocked out in the first round of the NIT will not be good for anyone. Do not play in the NIT!
This
The season is an epic fail and Coach Pike is accountable.
His game planning and idiotic substitution patterns shows he is not capable of bringing the Program to the next level. If no improvement next season changes need to be made.

Cannot reject NCAA bid (more like an assignment), so the days of Al McGuire going NIT because he didn't like being sent to West Regional are over

There is ZERO shot we get 3,000 let alone 6,000.

If it's during school spring break and a one and done in B10 tournament, I'd say 4000k tops
We’d lose maybe 500-600 (out of around 1,000) from the student section being on spring break, so you’re assuming we’d have half or less of the general seats filled. That just hasn’t happened at all this year, and I don’t think it happened last year either.

We will not be playing in front of 3,000 people if we host an NIT game, and if we are, shame on the fanbase.

You are forgetting the fact that almost all of the seats are part of a season ticket package. The people that come will have to make a separate purchase to attend.

I will be on of those guys you are going to have put shame on. I went to all the NIT games in the past, but things are different now. Finishing in 69th place mean nothing to me right now. Maybe I'd see things differently in a week.

For the record I didnt miss a OOC game and missed 2 home games in total because I went to watch my own kid play/compete.

So the school w 1 tournament win in the lifetime of the entire student body, plus another 20 years, is now all of a sudden above the NIT?? If they're hurt, don't play em. If they need a mental break, leave em home and never refer to em as "tough Jersey kids" ever again..sorry, but this is an asinine discussion

You suck it up, man up, and play. And play the players that give you the best chance to win. It's not an audition, or an exhibition, you make the most of the opportunity you've been given.
I’d take a BIG run in the NIT over one and done in the NCAAs just like under Gary Waters.

what you are forgetting is that thousands of ru fans have been shut out of games, either too pricey or not available. Its not like the fred hill years or jordan. RU hoops is an attraction and an event now so keep the cost of tickets fairly cheap and you will get an okay number. Should RU get to the quarters and are playing North Carolina I guarantee you the place will be overflow

Rutgers women turned down the invite for the NIT in 2018. They were 20-12. They also had the highest RPI of all the teams on the bubble.
Totally useless tournament.
God forbid somebody tears an ACL.

Xavier was 16-5. lost 8 of 10, then won the NIT
But they turned things around and won the NIT after firing their head coach one game into the tournament.. Xavier won a close first round game against Cleveland State, then fired their coach after that game and won the NIT with an assistant coach coaching their last 4 tournament games.. I wonder if they'd have still won the tournament if they hadn't made the coaching change.
