Answer one 17'n question what did you love about Stansbury?
Answer the question, that's it.
Its not so much the "draw" of the city as the lack of a recruiting base. Starkville does not have a real basketball prospect very often.
The question was directed at the OP. Who has been very anti Mullen, You're answer is fine and I can't is disagree with it.
Had Stansbury stuck to those things, I don't think many people would have been willing to risk it. But since he didn't, it was time for a change. I'm a big Stansbury fan and think he should be thought of basically like the Kang. They both were great for the school, but it was time for both of them to step away when they did (actually we probably waited a year too late for Stansbury and maybe more for Jackie). But even while Jackie's last few years were worse, he still left the program in better shape than Stansbury left the basketball team.
Things are much worse now than Stansbury's average year, but you have to remember it's probably not much worse than it would be with Stansbury here. Last year probably would have been basically the same; I assume this year would be better because Stansbury would have done better recruiting, but we'd likely still have more of a drug problem and the inmates would still be running the asylum. It is possible that we made a terrible hire. I actually think we did ok except for the fact that we hired somebody with no recruiting ties in our recruiting footprint (basically the southeast) and that's too much to overcome when you're inheriting a bare cupboard. But if we made a mistake hiring Ray, it doesn't really reflect on the decision to encourage Stansbury to leave, other than maybe we gave Stansbury a year too long and crippled our coaching search by letting the program devolve into such a dumpster fire before asking people if they wanted it.
My bad. As a fan, I'm a pretty simple guy when it comes down to it. I let other people argue about Xs and Ox, play calling, or whether we're displaying the proper fundamentals or not. All I ask for, though, is a competitive team that wins ballgames more times than not, an entertaining gameday atmosphere, and a few bright spots here and there in recruiting. If I come off as bitter, it truthfully doesn't have a thing to do with Stansbury himself. It's due to the fact that in spite of all of our team's or coach's flaws, we had all of the things that keep me interested in basketball year in and year out, but we seemingly threw it all out the window.
Make no mistake, I'm not blaming one person here. I think that fault of the current situation lies on the shoulders of former coaches, current coaches, and current admin. It was a combination of 17 ups that led to this. It's just frustrating, though, because no matter who we signed, who transferred, or who just flat our quit from our former teams, Stansbury always managed to put an entertaining product on the floor. The light at the end of the tunnel for Ray, on the other hand, seems to keep getting pushed out farther and farther.
