College coaches HAVE to use manipulation and psychology. These guys are pulling down six and seven-figure salaries, and it all hinges on how well a bunch of 18-21 year olds do, 90% of whom were pampered their whole lives, told how "great" they were. Also, most of those players aren't as smart as A.J. Barker, and are quite willing to be manipulated like that.
It is pretty fishy that the best receiver a team has isn't awarded a scholarship. I don't know, it sounded like maybe he comes from a wealthy family. It's the principle of it though.
I thought it was tastefully written. Too bad we're not recruiting anyone against Minnesota.
For those of you who played highschool/college sports, a question:
How typical is the behavior he's talking about? I never pursued sports on that level because I don't deal well with just that type of behavior, but I'm really curious if his situation is typical.
Also, love the twitter quote. I'm officially a spiritual republican.
Even though I've had coaches get into my face, I haven't had any issues with being extremely dressed down like that before, but other people I associate with on different teams make me think that that level of disrespect is a little too common, although this write up about Jerry Kill seems to be a bit higher up on that extreme.
Never should a coach berate a leader of the team in public like that. Ever. Hell, no boss at any job should do that in front of other employees. All it does is breed contempt. It shows very poor leadership skills, in my opinion.
it's not necessary at all. i can count the times i heard my high school coach cuss on both hands. we played our *** off for him and lost 1 game over 3 years. did he tear into us when we weren't preforming at the level he thought we should? yeah. but you don't have to go about it that way.
He may be somewhat of a spoiled brat, but it's obvious the entire thing bothered him greatly. And it's also obvious that he's pretty intelligent. I pretty much side with the player on this one.
Wouldn't mind having him transfer to MSU, but I wonder if could stand Mullen? I suspect he's pretty "intense" during practice as well. But I seriously doubt he would publicly berate anyone like Jerry Kill apparently did to this guy. Reminds me of my basic training days ....
