Interesting because they still get players. Maybe the program just has "stain", whatever the a&!?$ that means.

Really tough comments about Miami's cheapness. I am also surprised that they recruit as well as they do in a really talent rich state with so many other schools.
Of course, the article doesn't mention how dirty the program was.

Miami is a private school with a fairweather fanbase in a talent rich county (Dade). The lack of an alumni base that rival state schools like UF and F$U limit it's support locally to Miami residents that only support UM when they win. Plus having no on campus stadium and playing schools like Wake Forest and Duke don't move the needle with Da U glory day followers.

In retrospect it seems inevitable that the changing landscape of college football over the last 25 years was going to create winners and losers, and leave some once high-flying programs struggling. Nebraska, penn state, syracuse, Tennessee are some other programs that seem possibly destined to be stuck in 2nd gear, or worse. Most of them don't recruit the kind of talent they used to.

Disagree about Penn State and Tennessee. Their recruiting has been off the charts. Nebraska made a mistake with the new coach hire, IMO. They will recover.

Hate to say it, but PSU is only down now, but with the right HC, it should get back to being one of the top programs .
Penn St has the type of fans and booster that will put it back among the top college FB programs.
Nebraska I'm not sure about, but wouldn't bet they won't be a top program if their boosters are willing to help make that happen.
Tennessee still puts them in the stands, but think they are and have been a program very close to the top , but not quite good enough top be considered one.
I won't see them short and say they can't be one of the best, because of the type of support I think they are getting from their fans and boosters.
Syracuse's days have passed and doubt they can raise enough money to bring glory days back.

They've played for and won a lot of championships. That's what they sell to recruits, along with hookers and blow. It takes decades of ineptitude to erase that. Talent hasn't been their problem. Coaching is.

Penn State has one the largest fanbases in the country and sits in the middle of a tremendous recruiting area, highly doubtful they would be in a permanent decline?

The thing is with the exception of syracuse, the programs I mentioned have all won national championships, sometimes more than once, in the last 20 to 30 years. Yet it's been a long time since any of them was even close to being a viable threat to get to the NC game and none of them looks likely to do so at this point. They may be good programs going forward but I doubt they will reach their former heights, especially Tennessee and nebraska.
