Has anyone heard that Viking has invested in Veterans mem stadium and is trying to add the "Viking Magnolia Bowl" in 2013? Makes no sense to me but would be pretty cool. Source is not reliable but works with reliable folks.

Jackson can have a bowl.

Personally, I think it would be great for the city.

Of course, there is the inevitable flag backlash and then there will be the "how will Jackson 17 this up" factor.

That aside, I think it would be great. I could see it being a C-USA vs Sun Belt match-up. I would love for it to be a SEC tie in, but realistically, I don't know that will happen.

The parking would be an issue, and I think they need to work something out with UMC to use at least one of their garages where UMC leases the garage out and gets some money from the people that park there- I saw this in Little Rock- and they need to make sure that there are some shuttle services for people- like at Smith-Wills parking lot, The Coliseum parking lot, and wherever else.

Then there are the festivities that would go along with it.

I love the idea of Viking sponsoring it because that is a MSU company.

Something like this would really help the city. Doubt it will ever happen though. The stadium has really gone down since New Kids played there.

Rumor says the SEC wants out of the Liberty Bowl so it won't be stuck playing CUSA anymore. Maybe this bowl could take over the SEC #9/10 slot and convince the Big East or something to send a team too? Or even the Mountain West?

I don't mean to make this a political thread, but the leadership in Jackson is bound to 17 this up.

There needs to be significant improvement to the stadium and the area around it to draw in a bowl game like this. No area in the general vicinity of "the vet" is safe for people to walk to and from their vehicles. If there is any doubt whether Jackson can handle a bowl game, reference the Saints preseason game.

The Liberty Bowl is like a pro stadium compared to "the vet".

But with an event of this size, security would step it up and I think it would be safe. Throw in a fondren after five and a jubilee jam type fest downtown and it could be a pretty cool atmosphere. I think the structure of the stadium is still in great condition but it would def have to have some aesthetic work done. Things like this could bring Jackson back. Kudos to Viking for even talking about it (if true)

because I've heard(by someone who would know) that there is a bill in the legislature to allow for the redevelopment of the stadium's land. This would demolish the stadium, and I believe UMC would be allowed to expand to the other side of State St.

for a few years now. I think it will eventually happen. Memorial Stadium is not the highest and best use of that property.

playing the State Football Championships at the Universities? If so, Strick needs to jump on this with Enis Proctor and offer for MSU to hold it for sure the first year, if not for MSU to be the permanent new home.

I also think a new stadium for JSU closer to campus is in the works or has been so Memorila may be making its last stand.

The block of Woodrow-State-Lakeland is the job epicenter of Jackson. It has several hospitals, and the med school. It's in walking distance to Fondren.

Therefore, the stadium site is the most logical place in the city for a high density, mixed use district. UMC can anchor the area w/ office, med, and research facilities, and condos/apartments/ancillary office can go above. retail could thrive here, i.e. restaurants and drug store(s).

Jackson has had a history of giving away the best land to governmental facilities that A.) don't pay taxes, and B.) are extremely difficult if not impossible to get back into the private sector's hands.

I'm glad to see this bill's active. Hopefully someone will put it through.

Its hosted by the school that doesn't host the Iron bowl. If this was ever adopted by Mississippi, then we would have to go down the inevitable road of debating adding Southern into therotation

The NCAA is still boycotting all pre and postseason football and basketball activity in Mississippi because of the state flag. The only exception they made was for baseball.

Arizona can profile or whatver they want to do, that's ok, the Fiesta Bowl is huge money. Mississippi is not.

IF the 15k seat athletic & music events arena is built in Jackson (it's gaining momentum)...
and IF they're going to tear down Memorial Stadium (like you said, makes sense)...
and IF the state builds JSU another football stadium (they'll have to)...

Why wouldn't we put those close together, share parking, make it very efficient, and utilize that complex for everything mentioned above, PLUS the proposed bowl game, an Arena Football team (which the league wants), and whatever else we can throw in there?

The only reason would be if the city can't get its **** together. It makes too much sense.

But this must only apply to Div I athletics b/c I know some smaller divisions have hosted basketball and football post season games.

It'd be fantastic for downtown Jackson development if it could happen. There's more that's gone on down here in the last 5 years than I would have ever thought possible. If we could get that, that would be the tipping point to turning downtown Jackson into a very cool place. In fact, Jacktoberfest is going on right outside. I think I'll step back outand take a listen.

They reluctantly agreed to one more year as the Sponsor of the PGA tourney. They have had to layoff close to 100 employees over the past year.

If it makes sense, history tells us Jackson leadership will sink it in the ground. Hopefully the business community can push the logic through the powers that be.
