17 points wins this game.
Hawks can't win without a short field(blocked punt) or turnovers.
Gonna be another ugly game.

You must be confusing me with someone else as well. NEVER said Powell was not a loss on the D…I never said he was going to score points. You must be confusing me with some other poster . I also never said Iowa is scoring 24 points. Again you are confused . I think RU wins this game . But if you don’t think Powell would help hold their offense to fewer points then you have not been watching him play. He is NFL caliber.
That wasn’t the question …the post was about Iowa and its inability to score points… 24 pts. was the total mentioned that they would put up against our D. If we are depending upon one guy then we are in B1G trouble.I never said he was going to score points. You must be confusing me with some other poster . I also never said Iowa is scoring 24 points. They have to be the most unhappy fanbase of a 7-2 team that wasn't a preseason Playoff contender.
Which is fatal if you can only drive down field on the ground until the 20 yard line. If you can't score from further out and you're unlikely to get to the red zone very often, each trip there has to count otherwise you have a largely useless offense. FGs don't win games.
It's not a great model of offense if it works against one team per year or only bad teams. It gives you a ceiling.Field goals may win on Saturday
Weren’t 14 of Iowa points scored by their Defense on Rutgers turnovers last year ?
I think if we win the Turnover battle we win this game.

No one is saying that the current RU offense is ideal, just that if they don’t get cute and put in the same performance they did against OSU, minus the pick six, the 15-20 points that would result would be enough to beat Iowa. It's not a great model of offense if it works against one team per year or only bad teams. It gives you a ceiling.
Needham and Ahanotu as well.Injuries on both sides. Powell, Long etc and they most likely will be out some OL. Not overconfident but I do like our chances just have to play a clean game.
Thank you I knew there were moreNeedham and Ahanotu as well.
you gotta ignore Mel and his sidekick. they do provide some comedic genius at times
one play vs OSU that I think is directly attributed to Powell being absent but other than that, the D did very well as the unit worked well together
I agree that he does not lead in stats but it is like saying Jeter wasnt really the most important player on the Yankees all those years(outside of Mo) - because there were better hitters and fielders on the team and better SS's around the league too.stop
no one is saying its transitive however, what he said is correct in that Powell, while good, is not 'the man' per the stat sheet. Now we all know assignments and positioning on varied plays can be made by the guy NOT on the tackle or in the spotlight but............he's not wrong
And they haven't really beaten anyone better than we have, except Wisconsin.Winning games with the worst offense in the country isn't a sustainable plan.
Word is that Ahanotu will be available for the Iowa game.Needham and Ahanotu as well.
Well- we are 5th in the B1G in scoring and there are 6 teams in the B1G alone that average less yards per game...Winning games with the worst offense in the country isn't a sustainable plan.

Not sure how that equates to the worst offense in the country. Are you using some other way besides points and yards to make your statement?
And they had beaten Wisconsin because they knocked out their QB in the 1st Half. And they haven't really beaten anyone better than we have, except Wisconsin.
fair enough- my bad.The thread is about Iowa and specifically the post I responded to was about the Iowa fanbase, correct?
Iowa offense
PPG: 18.9 (#115 out of 133)
YPG: 225.3 (#133 out of 133)
That's how it equates.
Not sure why you're talking about our offense.

I actually think the only way they can beat us is with turnovers. The thread is about Iowa and specifically the post I responded to was about the Iowa fanbase, correct?

From turnovers. If the offense can take care of the ball and score 14 points, then Rutgers will win. Wimsatt is excellent at not throwing interceptions but he has to hit the receivers to help the running game. Iowa's plan is no secret, they will line up to stop the run and try to pick off Rutgers passes.Never said Powell isn’t a loss. He is not going to help us score points against Iowa.i’m curious to know why someone thinks Iowa is scoring 24 points ? They may as every game is different however I’m going with Rutgers being able to stop them from doing that.
This is the one game where 9 points might just win it.Which is fatal if you can only drive down field on the ground until the 20 yard line. If you can't score from further out and you're unlikely to get to the red zone very often, each trip there has to count otherwise you have a largely useless offense. FGs don't win games.
That’s not what you really meant but ok . Still doesn’t impact our offense that much. Though very good his play is not helping them score the “ predicted” 24 points Rutgers 23 - Iowa 16.From turnovers. stop... love your approach to a lot of things but now you want to use Jeter as your bar?I agree that he does not lead in stats but it is like saying Jeter wasnt really the most important player on the Yankees all those years(outside of Mo) - because there were better hitters and fielders on the team and better SS's around the league too.
Powell is the defensive QB
And that "one play" sort of changed the game...just saying![]()
Iowa can’t throw either. So I don’t know that that’s necessarily true.stop... love your approach to a lot of things but now you want to use Jeter as your bar?
full stop, one play doesn't win or lose a game, it's a series of mishaps or good plays
let's restart this
if we can't throw, we lose this game. need to be able to throw and I've not a lot of confidence in Gav
they will shut our run down and will stack the box more than anyone has. We absolutely will need to throw in this game. Think about it, they can lock up the West, know the strength of our team is geared to run the ball, the weak spot on the offense is our passing game, top in forcing opponents to punt so what do you think they are going to do?Iowa can’t throw either. So I don’t know that that’s necessarily true.
OSU was giving up just under 100 yds on the ground before we put up almost 250...Iowa gives up 120 on the ground and we give up 122...they will shut our run down and will stack the box more than anyone has. We absolutely will need to throw in this game. Think about it, they can lock up the West, know the strength of our team is geared to run the ball, the weak spot on the offense is our passing game, top in forcing opponents to punt so what do you think they are going to do?
That made me look even deeper- both teams give up 300 a game - we played both OSU and Michigan. By far, the two top offenses in the Conference. And our offense has over 100 more yds per game and we have 2 of the top 3 defenses that we played.Conference play only:
Yards allowed:
Rutgers - 303.2
Iowa - 303.7
Yards gained:
Rutgers - 298
Iowa - 187
Wimsatt passing efficiency - 101.2 (not good)
Hill (Iowa) - 78.8. 41.1% completion percentage
Iowa TD drive last week - 7 plays 25 yards after a blocked punt
TD drive vs. Minnesota - 6 plays 46 yards, helped by four penalties for 32 yards, three of which gave them first downs. They also managed a 70 yard FG drive to start the game fueled by three completions for 18, 10, and 36 yards.
TD drive vs. Wisconsin - 3 plays, 90 yards - mostly an 82 yard TD run on 3rd and 2. Other than that play, they gained 155 yards all game long.
TD #1 vs. Purdue - 2 plays, 80 yards - mostly a 67 yard TD run.
TD #2 vs. Purdue - 6 plays, 46 yards - one 15 yard run, one 22 yard TD pass
TD #1 vs. MSU - 5 plays, 80 yards - passes for 32, 17, and 13 yards plus a roughing penalty.
TD #2 vs. MSU - 70 yard punt return by Cooper
Don't let Cooper return any punts, don't throw a pick six/fumble deep in our territory. Grind it out and win the game.
I get it I really doOSU was giving up just under 100 yds on the ground before we put up almost 250...Iowa gives up 120 on the ground and we give up 122...
The big difference is that we average 185 on the ground and Iowa averages 114 on the ground.
It is more likely we stack the box and shut them completely down and that we are able to run on them. My big concern is tun overs- and that has only been happening in the passing game and punt returns. Game plan, as much as so many on here hate it is to run the ball unless they somehow get 2 scores up. And even if we are going into the half averaging 3 yds a run- just keep running it. and on punts- fair catch ever single one of them.
Your still not explaining where their offense is coming from outside of us throwing picks or fumbling the ball to them. Their OL was garbage to begin with and it sounds like they will be quite a bit banged up. I’ll be pretty disapppointed if they somehow develop a resurgent offense against us.they will shut our run down and will stack the box more than anyone has. We absolutely will need to throw in this game. Think about it, they can lock up the West, know the strength of our team is geared to run the ball, the weak spot on the offense is our passing game, top in forcing opponents to punt so what do you think they are going to do?
The trick is- can they do it...OSU has an even better defense and they couldn't stop our current run game.I get it I really do
each game is different and for them to win the West, they need to shut us down. They will force us to be one dimensional, I think. I can't imagine any gameplan for them that doesn't include shutting the run down at all costs and forcing Gav to be a qb who can throw.
would you do it any different?
We'll see lots of man and accompanied packages
I don't think OSU was as focused on shutting down our run as Iowa will be. Iowa may lose (hopefully), but they will not let Mongo get a 100ydsThe trick is- can they do it...OSU has an even better defense and they couldn't stop our current run game.
You are right that it may have to come down to GW making a play with his arm- but also a good chance, he may never have to do so.
