I'm a UNC alum who served as a football manager during my time there. Have a daughter (UNC alum) and a son (App alum). We go to games at each. So I don't claim to be totally unbiased.
Having said that, and as much as it pains me, I believe State has the best team in North Carolina, though not by a large margin over Wake or App.
But those who think UNC and Fedora are trailing way behind are delusional. Take your team, whoever they may be, and swap circumstances with UNC. Take the early departures, including one heckuva running back and the quarterback who was picked number two in the NFL draft. Add to that the seven year saga involving the AFAM classes and its effect on recruiting. Even if you believe the very worst on that issue, no one currently in the program was responsible, but they paid the recruiting price.
Now factor in the previous recruiting sanctions, which were deserved. Most importantly, add in the injuries. I read an article around the eighth game of the season that said the average NCAA team at that point had 1.15 players who were out for the season due to injury. Carolina at that point had seventeen, fourteen of which had been a starter at some point. They ended the season with 22 players out, seventeen of whom started. They had, by far, the most games missed, the most starters out of any team in the nation.
Larry Fedora is just as good today as he was the previous couple of years when he was the media darling and much sought after by other schools.
You haters (including the UNC so called fans) keep sleeping on Fedora and the Tar Heels. But ask yourself honestly if your school could have done any better with the same conditions.
With all that, Go Mountaineers!
Fedora at UNC 10 games over .500 in 6 years at the top.
- 1 top 25 finish
- Zero Conf Titles
- Zero NYD Bowls
- 1 division title
- 1 bowl win
- 1 season of 9 wins or more
Injuries? Everyone has them. You want to throw out 2017? Great...I get to throw out 2015. Your left with 4 games above .500 in the easy ACC Coastal.
Players leaving early?? Please stop.
Academic scandal hasnt helped. I dont think it has been as big an issue as many think but I buy its cost you some kids. That said the bow was tied on that in early October and this recruiting class was weaker than the previous 2. What does that tell ya? What's really killing Mr. Fedora are the names Dabo, Fuentes and now Kirby and Doeren. They are eating his lunch.
In the end its about recruiting and players. Fedora is inside of 200 miles of a top 5 or 6 recruiting hot bed and he isnt getting kids. Specifically big kids that tackle people or big kids that block. He will always get a top flight QB or two ( though not sure even about that any more) and he will always land the outside talent because of his offensive system. That buys you 6-7 wins most years.
Take a hard look at rosters in the ACC and SEC and look at the home states of defensive studs. I could build a roster of All-conf kids just in NC.
The last 2 years ( including this one) he has signed one impact NC kid in the defensive front 7 and that kid was most likely committed to UNC before he was born. Henry, Dax, Tisdale, Sandridge, Davis, Foster,Butler, Greene, Wilson,Mcneil...........swing and a miss.
I give him a small break with Olineman as the state is and has been weak here but even then when you get a Pollard, Crowder, Dickerson.......you better get him signed.
Fedora hasnt been awful he has been exactly what he is. High scoring offensive guy who has been just above average his entire career. He parlayed one great year at Southern Miss into this gig. Beyond that he was slighly above average in Conf USA. But he scored alot of points and was pretty fun to watch. He should of got out after 2015 but he took the check and its hard to fault a guy for that.
Meanwhile.......2017 class was 5th or 6th in the ACC, 2018 will be somewhere between 7th and 8th. He will be fortunate to get 6 wins next year so they become even more irrelevant and look out because even Muschamp is getting traction here now and I think if Doeren can get Finley to stay and survive next year he becomes and even bigger issue for Larry. The Wilson flip was a huge problem.
You gotta own your state. Go back and look at the early 90's Brown squads. 80% NC kids. The state is bigger and the football MUCH better than back then.
