Lost Pizza Co is really popular in Southaven. I'm not a big fan of it. Reminds me of something you'd get from Chuck E Cheese.

If I ever decide to take a shot at running a franchise, I think it's going to have to be a pizza place. It blows my mind as to how many pizza restaurants and gas stations an average town can support.

I'm not familiar with Soulshine. Decent place?

Don't

get me wrong, it's not bad. However, people act like it's the best place to get a hamburger, ever. That's just nowhere near the case, to me.

My two favorite spots in Starkville are Dave's and Strombolis. Old Venice isn't too shabby with their pie either. So there's three in that tiny town on top of all the cardboard pizza national chains. Now they're getting two more?

The Soulshine on Lakeland in Flowood is good. Not my favorite pie but it's good, they have a good beer selection, and a small stage for some music. They used to carry the Lazy Mag Jefferson Stout when it was on Old Fannin Rd. However, they have a Soulshine out on Highland Colony Parkway that I won't go to anymore. The service sucked and the food just wasn't as good, and that's assuming they brought out the right order.

It's good.... but no different than anything I could throw on my own grill.

Hooters

Starkville needs one. They have hot wings and fried dill pickles...and save room for the chocolate cake. It's reasonably priced. If I had to give it a formal description, I'd say it's delightfully tacky, yet unrefined.

Pizza + college students = recipe for success. I see Soulshine doing well, if only to spell some of the crowds that Stromboli's has. When I was still in school and we drove to Stromboli's and it was packed, we'd pass right on by. A negative of having such a small, unique spot. Dave's is great, as well. Old Venice has a couple of good pie's. But the thing about Dave's and OV is they could probably still be successful without pizza. Dave has a good menu overall, and OV is obviously your typical Italian joint. Soulshine would be a direct competitor with Stromboli's since both are pretty much pie-only.

I think Steak n Shake could be successful in Starkville. Cheaply priced food would be a good thing for the college kids and it's actually good.

I bet a place like Babalu would thrive in Starkville. Hipsters would be all over it.

Fast food wise, I'd say it is the best damn burger you're gonna get. But I could equal or best it at home and definitely get better at restaraunts without drive-thru windows.

Ah Soulshine. If it is the same pizza place they just put next to my condo in Nashville, I'll pass. They spent a TON of money renovating that old building. Place looks badass. Perfect location. Perfect atmosphere. Food is BEYOND awful. I mean awful. Service sucks. Manager is a dick. This is a true story. Ive been 3 times. Each time my meal was comp'd and I was given a gift certificate. No ********.

The sad thing is the place could be unbelievable. It may be a different soulshine place than what yall are talking about it. Weird thing is, all my friends still go to Soulshine regularly and all think the food sucks and service is bad????????? Also, Scott Stricklin was there a few weeks ago doing some alumni event.

If I am going to eat a hamburger at a restaurant, I am going to eat the Bin Burger at the Bin 612, or a burger basket from Brian Michael's. That is the only two places in the area that give me hamburger cravings from time to time

CJ's is pretty solid. I don't know how good their usual business is, but I hope they don't become victim of being almost completely hidden. I wish I could make it to their Sunday buffet more often.

I know it isn't cool to go with the popular choice, but Mugshot's makes the best burgers I've ever had.. Steak burger, pepperjack burger....slap your momma good!

I love Mugshots. The Mcdonald with American, man oh man. Wish Nashville had one. I go visit a friend in B-ham once every couple weeks just to get one.

I wish. I would be happy with a Steak n Shake and an O'Charleys as far as chain restaurants go. Not enough places with good rolls in this town.

What are y'all calling fast food though? There's no drive through at Five Guys... And my burger never comes out that "fast". I can go to Majestic Burger or Burgers and Blues about as fast as Five Guys.

Also, about Soul Shine, if it wasn't for their decent beer selection, I don't even think they'd be in business. They have the worst crust I've ever had on pizza before.

It was a rumor. They're not coming to Stark.

There are burgers that are good that you eat to eat (McDonald's), there are those same kind of burgers that are "quality" (Wendy's), there's your charbroiled (Hardee's), and then there are your diner burgers... Like 5 Guys. It's a different burger than any other fast-food burger. If you're into that kind of burger, it's good. I'll always go for a non-franchise burger first though.

On that note, Coconut's (gas station) makes a killer burger.

Is this a Hooters = Utters joke? Otherwise, I don't get it. There are Hooters located in many of the world's finest cities: Atlanta, Houston, Orlando, New York, Chippewah Falls, Aspen (never been though, the French are such ********). If you need further proof...Birmingham does not have a Hooters. And we've all been to Birmingham.

Old Venice isn't near as good as it used to be $20 for a large pizza and I swear it was smaller than a medium at the national joints and on par w papa johns. Shrinkage has definitely hit their pizzas bc they used to be massive.

Iron Horse Grill would do some serious damage in Starkville, if put in the right spot. Have it modeled after the former one in downtown Jackson. No outparcel free standing ****, find a vacant space with a rustic type facade, in town, and you have signature type restaurant. Visiting fan bases would love it too.

Does modeling it after the one in downtown Jackson include opening for awhile, then it mysteriously burns down, rebuilds then it burns AGAIN?

Old Venice is about as chain as you're going to get pizza without actually ordering from Papa John's.

I was discussing this with someone the other day. I'm from Gulfport and I've spent a lot of time in NYC (moving there in July). In Gulfport the #1 pizza place is Brooklyn and it's constantly packed. I skipped out of high school for lunch one day and went there and the principal walked in and said hey to me. He knew what was up. We never spoke of it, it was understood. If you're going to place hookie in the middle of day to go somewhere for lunch, you go there.

In NYC I regularly buy one or two slices of LEGIT pizza. In Starkville you have to buy a whole pizza for $10+... a ****** pizza. If there was an easily accessible pizza place like Brooklyn in Gulfport in Starkville they would make bank. Serious bank.

Pizzas have the highest mark-up of any food. That's why there are so many. The problem is the amount of chains that have moved in and upped prices. A private company like Stromboli's (a different type of pizza... who also doesn't serve single slices) could sell cheaper, single serve slices and grab 80% of the sober market.

Agreed...I have a 5 guys and a Red Robin within 1 mile from my house. I'll go to Red Robin 9 out of 10 times when I have the choice. Them damn peanuts and soda fountain make me roll into 5 guys because of the kids though.

It's reopening again for the 3rd time, not sure if same site, but same area. It will do great at lunch, but dinner might get thin after some time, since it's downtown Jackson.

But I believe the Iron Horse Grill would be a big hit in Starkville for a long time, and would double as a live music venue. People love Tex-Mex, and their food was great but it was the atmosphere that people liked the most. Starkville longs for something like this, and I think it would work..if put the correct place and done right. It would be an instant off campus magnet and students would love the freaking place.

The only thing that I see potentially inhibiting it from staying open would be local town opposition and pressure from law enforcement that would curtail service and/or business hours. That would not surprise me in the least.

Same site. Different ownership and management. Supposed to be similar to the old Iron Horse but with some changes. One being that it will host the Mississippi Blues Museum. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out, but I'm excited about it. The old Iron Horse did a killer lunch business but it also did a lot of night business too, especially on weekends.
