Not necessarily true. Auburn and KY could care less about baseball and you can see it by how much money is invested in it. KY HAD to build a new stadium because their previous one was downright embarrassing. And how Butch and Nick fare against us is no indicator of how successful either could here at MSU. I think both would do well and I'd be fine with either. Why? Both have shown they can take non-baseball schools to the CWS. They both play in the toughest conference in the world and do reasonably well. What assistant or HC of some other inferior conference would be better? Very few and those few ain't coming to MSU.If Butch or Mingione are hired that shows this program isn’t serious about getting better
What are you implying here?Well, his mom is getting older. Sooo.....ya know
Love this board. It'd have to be either Butch or Mingione. The latter seems more likely, but neither would be a homerun.
He does hail from Monroe countya certain SEC HC wouldn't mind coming back home to coach.
I'm not sure and I'm not looking it up but I think what some are saying is the programs these two are coaching now are in a better position today than the day they were hired and that the panama canal wasn't built overnight. Might be best to check out the 1st year stats and see if steady improvement was made and make a decision on that instead of just looking at wins/losses.How many coaches with losing conference records who didn’t coach at Mississippi State do you want us to hire? Then why are you ok with these two? That’s typical small minded Mississippi State thinking that has held us back for 80 years.
Auburn has had 6 coaches since 1985. Butch’s winning % is 3rd of the 6. Historically he’s about average for Auburn. He’s not a bad coach & he’d do ok here. But we need to aim higher. Much higher.I'm not sure and I'm not looking it up but I think what some are saying is the programs these two are coaching now are in a better position today than the day they were hired and that the panama canal wasn't built overnight. I blv Butch is the safety valve. Throwing $ after big names but in case they say no. Like you I hope we get the HR hires.Auburn has had 6 coaches since 1985. Butch’s winning % is 3rd of the 6. You didn't say which sport.a certain SEC HC wouldn't mind coming back home to coach.
I'd take that in a heartbeat. You didn't say which sport.
Maybe Mullen? From what I've heard, UNLV can't afford to pay him his full contract, and he's best we've had, at least since Jackie.
If we're a big boy school, then we should go get a big boy coach. But since we always do the Mississippi State thing and halfass it, bringing butch back sounds about right.Well I will say IF it is Butch, then maybe not a homerun hire but I'd say it's at least a double or even a triple. He has done ok at at Auburn. I think he would be better in here at the Dude! He knows our tradition.
Taking a sitting SEC coach who has made trips to Omaha IS a big boy hire, and it won't be cheap if that's the route we go.If we're a big boy school, then we should go get a big boy coach. But since we always do the Mississippi State thing and halfass it, bringing butch back sounds about right.
Interesting stats.Taking a sitting SEC coach who has made trips to Omaha IS a big boy hire, and it won't be cheap if that's the route we go.
He's not the most exciting hire we could make, but he's done a great job at Auburn. He's had some downs along with the ups, and we'd hope for a little more consistency. But in the last 6 years (not counting 2020) he's been to two CWS, another Super Regional, and hosted twice. That's better than some of the names on our hot board (Chris Pollard or Tom Walter, for two). It's actually shockingly similar to what Cohen did at Mississippi State.
Cohen: 8 Completed seasons, .583 overall winning %, .454 SEC %. Thompson 8 completed seasons, .584 and .455 (that does include the partial 2020 and this year so far)
Thompson 5 regionals, 3 super, 2 CWS.
Cohen 5 regionals, 3 super, 1 CWS.
Cohen's highs were higher: he had a national runner up finish and an SEC championship (& national seed) which Thompson hasn't done. But his overall body of work is very good.
I agree with you but question, if Butch left a program he has built up; coming back to State, would this be his dream job? Would it potentially light a fire for him? Get that second wind going lol?I don't have a problem with Butch, he's just not at the top of my list. If he can get Coggin to come as hitting coach, wouldn't hate it. Might look to see if Easley would be interested in a staff spot as well. One big MSU fam!
Second wind? I think he's in his prime. Again, he's not the top guy for me, but I can live with it. Getting a strong hitting coach/recruiter makes it better.I agree with you but question, if Butch left a program he has built up; coming back to State, would this be his dream job? So Butch it is then. **Steve seems pretty convinced Butch is not leaving Auburn.
The fact you found those stats, hats off to you! That’s crazy! Good $hat though.Taking a sitting SEC coach who has made trips to Omaha IS a big boy hire, and it won't be cheap if that's the route we go.

Hiring butch would be an extremely lazy hire. We can do better.Taking a sitting SEC coach who has made trips to Omaha IS a big boy hire, and it won't be cheap if that's the route we go.

We should certainly aim for better and hopefully have better on the top of our list. But if we swing and miss with bigger names, which is likely, butch would be a very good back up plan. Again, not my first choice and I hope not the ADs first choice, but a very solid fallback plan.Hiring butch would be an extremely lazy hire. We can do better.
I absolutely remember that press conference when we hired Croom, actually back then had me kinda pumped. That feeling left quickly especially after losing to Tulane back then. Then again we also beat Saban in his first year at bama and became bowl eligible that was a big deal back then. I took two of my friends that were Ole Miss fans to that game. They had a damn blast especially the the chants after the game while walking down from our seats. They ended up going to MSU after all. Mainly because of their major also. Also took a friend to the crazy egg bowl where we beat TSUN when Pegues ran back the kick and we were clapping their recievers, hell I thought Jamar Chaney killed Shay Hodge we had excellent seats and the hit/hits were vicious. He said it was louder than he had ever heard Arkansas Stadium. Just a story to throw out thereMarron is all that matters.
Anybody who doesn't allow crying in baseball has to be given consideration.Just finished watching A League of Their Own again and I have decided to throw 100 percent of my support behind Jimmy Dugan. Anyone that can successfully coach a bunch of women has got to be an elite coach.
I think we can stop talking about O'Connor (he's not moving), as well as Mingione and Bakich (because of buyout $).I don’t think it will be Butch unless Selmon pulls a Cohen type thing hiring a Coach. MSU baseball is a better job than Auburn baseball. I’m hoping for O’Connell or Johnson. But I’d keep an eye on Butch mainly because he may be tried of dealing with Cohen.
Based on T&L today the powers at be must be thinking Butch—lots of water carrying to soften the blow on the episode today.a certain SEC HC wouldn't mind coming back home to coach.
In Auburn's 2 CWS appearances, they were 16-13 and 14-16 in SEC those seasons. Getting to the tourney is the primary first step. Can't get there without making a Super Regional! Can't get there without pitching and defense. Many teams have made it with those 2. The LSU monster baskets were more the exception!Taking a sitting SEC coach who has made trips to Omaha IS a big boy hire, and it won't be cheap if that's the route we go.

You obviously don't know Butch. I know him. He's got some fire. He's a nice guy but he's one fierce competitor, I don't see him needing a "second wind". Remember, he's been around the IB (Cohen) for many a year now. Sometime the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.I agree with you but question, if Butch left a program he has built up; coming back to State, would this be his dream job?
