Jackson State should ditch the SWAC and go FBS

Their brand is high. They just won the HBCU national championship. They could be competitive in CUSA and be in the playoff within a decade.

plus it would help close Valley, a drain on our states resources.

They are not even a Top 15 team in FCS. I think that would be a horrible idea. There is a reason the HBCU’s stopped participating in the FCS Playoffs, it wasn’t exactly going well for them.

What’s their athletics budget compared to CUSA schools?

And can JSU stomach the $5 million fee to go BCS and associated costs?

It’s a good play from an attendance standpoint…

Yeah, this dude has to be trolling. Competitive in CUSA within a decade? With what money and resources? Their enrollment is one third of what it is even at the Appalachian States and USM’s of the world, and it ain’t exactly because of strict admissions requirements.

And what them jumping to FBS has to do with closing MVSU….I have absolutely no clue.

Only a Mississippian would think that a 4th FBS team in a small state which already has 3, would be a good move for anybody, either the 4th school or the existing 3.

And then throw in a ‘cut to save some muh money111’ comment to complete the genius thought.

I wonder if the folks who teach at Valley would agree with you? What about the folks who got degrees there?

Fahrrrrr errrrybody (except me of course).

I’ll just say that this move would have been seen as a viable play 30 years ago or so when there was talk of an HBCU FBS league.

Jackson State would be seen as very attractive because of its attendance numbers which are still remarkable for a FCS school.

The economic cost though is too far off now.

$5 million entry fee, extra scholarships to pay for, NIL, support staff and structure, and then there’s the facilities issue that has been put off for a long while. Just when will JSU & the state reach a deal over funding a new stadium?

The HBCU “National Championship” is on the same prestige level as the MAIS 6A “State” Championship
Exactly this. The HBCU “National Championship Game” is just the winners of the SWAC and MEAC. So you’re winning a “national championship” that is only contested for by 18 teams. The MEAC only has six teams in it! There are other HBCU schools that don’t play in one of those conferences. I guess they’re not eligible for the “national championship.”

Another thing in a long list of stupid shlt that we just can't get right.

MS in general just needs to get out of the industry of trying to make football elite. We don't need the Vet, so bulldoze it, expand the hospital, build JSU their smaller stadium. I mean our 7A high school only has 24 teams, what the 17 kinda league is that? And we all know about the geniuses in the MAIS. Most of our elite high school guys go out of state, heck Ole Miss recruits primarily out of state, and our best ball is played in the JUCO ranks because our high school coaching 'fraternity', made up of Peaches and that clown who got into the fight in Waynesboro, coach like it's 1987. There's just no sense in being united about it. Give everybody what they want. Let JSU have their national title, and as others said, it means about as much as Hartfield's title.

MS is a baseball state, always has been, always will be. Follow the money. Nearly every county seat has invested in a damned turf facility to host travel ball. We actually have real national titles in this area. Seems like the answer to what we should do is pretty obvious. Why hasn't a downtown Jackson baseball field been built yet? Someone explain to me how we mess this up so bad. Or heck, put it in Flowood near the river. Instead we built it in a parking lot in Pearl. I mean look around, there are shaved armed bros all throughout MS who would love to tell you about their glory days in 2002. Cleating chasing is a professional dating model round here.

Maybe because watching baseball is as boring as watching steel rust. Seeing some little jackrabbit adjust his nut sack 18 times at every at bat isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Eh, you missed the point. You still have all the football you want. And basketball. Just expect them to be average. Basketball maybe slightly better.

You expect Mississippi State to be exciting when the main campus is in Starkville? 😂

Baseball was made for Mississippi State.

At this point and looking at that dark cloud that is called 2025, I might vote to switch places with them.****
