For a top 20 paid coach, that’s pretty abysmal. And for reference, Howland was 59-67 while coming off a much worse situation…and pre NIL at that.
He has to recruit the perfect team to run his style of ball and win in the SEC. It’s just not working. Especially with key pieces being swapped out year after year from here on out.

AI write a song called waiting on the buyout

Title: “Waiting on the Buyout (Hail State Blues)”
Verse 1
Starkville lights on a Tuesday night,
Maroon seats half-filled, not much fight.
Cowbells ring but the echoes fade,
Another long walk from the court we made.
Press room questions, same old route,
Talkin’ ‘bout “growth” while the losses mount.
Clock keeps tickin’, boosters shout—
Just sittin’ here waitin’ on the buyout.
Chorus
I’m waitin’ on the buyout, countin’ every loss,
Scoreboard lights keep showin’ what it costs.
From Humphrey Coliseum to the message board doubt,
Just another game closer to the buyout.
Hail State cryin’, but the wins ain’t found,
Hope gets quiet when the nets come down.
Yeah, I’m still coachin’, but there ain’t no doubt—
Just biding my time for the buyout.
Verse 2
Ran that zone like a Sunday prayer,
But the other team’s shootin’ like nobody’s there.
Recruits keep callin’, askin’ what’s the plan,
I say “trust the process”… they don’t understand.
Athletic director with a careful smile,
Says, “We’ll evaluate in a little while.”
Contract ink dryin’, fans cryin’ out—
He knows I’m waitin’ on the buyout.
Chorus
I’m waitin’ on the buyout, countin’ every loss,
Another fast break, another coin we toss.
From SEC nights to the rumor mill shout,
Just another game closer to the buyout.
Hail State cryin’, but the wins ain’t found,
Hope gets quiet when the nets come down.
Yeah, I’m still coachin’, but there ain’t no doubt—
Just biding my time for the buyout.
Bridge
Cowbells ring like a judgment day,
Maroon and white just fade to gray.
Dreamed of banners hangin’ proud,
Now I read my future in the crowd.
They don’t hate me, they just want change—
That’s the nature of the game.
Verse 3
Last timeout, down twenty-two,
Drawin’ up plays nobody’ll use.
Students gone by the second half,
Even the mascot looks like he might laugh.
Shake their hands, walk off the floor,
Heard this final buzzer before.
Contract clause I think about—
Lord, send down that buyout.
Final Chorus
I’m waitin’ on the buyout, season almost done,
Zero in the column where there should be one.
From Starkville nights to the headlines loud,
Just another step toward the buyout.
Hail State echo through the southern night,
Someday soon they’ll get it right.
Till then I’m standin’ in the spotlight’s drought—
Just waitin’ on the buyout.
Outro
Yeah, the cowbells fade, the crowd files out…
And I’m still here waitin’ on the buyout. 🎶

If Jans doesn’t ultimately succeed here it says more about us than him. I may permanently declare our program hopeless at that point, like football.

Im not sure you can win in the SEC with his style of play. Players are just too talented.

This year obviously a hot mess. Last year probably underachieved by a couple of games. The first two years I don’t think anyone had any real issues with.

It was something that could be overlooked as long as we were making NCAAT’s, but in a bad year it makes the first three years look lesser than they were in real time.

He needs to play the young players to get them ready for next year and hope to add some better pieces. Selmon needs to explain that he has one more shot to get better. The SEC is not that tough this year. Its inexcusable to be this bad but too early to cut bait

Yeah but last year in the toughest league ever we had 4 games that if you win 1 or 2 you’re probably a 7 or 6 seed and win a tournament game instead of playing a national championship winning coach and lottery pick round 1. Kentucky, Bama, and Texas at home and Arkansas on the road

I think we probably should have won 10 or 11 games last year and been a 6 seed or so, I.e. exactly what Ole Miss ended up being and it earned them a path to the Sweet 16. Was very frustrating to see a team we beat twice take care of business in other spots in league play that we failed to take care of.

I'm afraid if our younger players can't get playing time on this team, they're not likely to ever improve enough to be SEC players.
