I get it if people in middle America and the south, etc. eat Subway, but I never understood people in the northeast eating that crap. What is even more bizarre is how everyone in the northeast agrees how awful Subway is, but it still succeeds and locations seems to multiple daily.

There are about 6 Jersey Mike's within throwing distance from me in Brick. The best one hands down is the JM's in Pt. Pleasant on Bridge Ave. I don't go anywhere else for subs!

Subway is ok if you want a salad sandwich and know what to expect when you walk in. It's not a real sub though.

Firehouse subs, which is a new national chain, has great subs. The beef brisket and cheddar sub is insanely good.

the correct answer is no national chain will be better than local mom and popz... Tastee's for the win

Jersey Mike's in Point is better than Tastee. Tastee is good/very good...had one before the OSU game, but JM's on Bridge Ave. is better.

You are free to start a thread of you own....guess what you can pick your own title! Good luck.

But if you wants my answers

Steak
Sour cream
Neither

It was a set up for the Flood line, tad bit sensitive?

I get a great sub at my local Shop Rite. As mentioned above if you want a salad on a roll than some Subway's are okay.

One Subway by me always has fresh veggies so you can get a good sub with spinach, tomatoes, green and yellow peppers, onions, olives etc.

I have also walked out of some Subway's because the produce looked disgusting,

I would never buy a sub from them with the cold cuts they use.

Subway is atrocious, I don't know how that company even exists. The meats and cheeses are awful.

No chain is as good as local delis. Faiccos in the Village makes the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. Was on diners, driveins and dives.

Wawa is the best. They are so high tech that you just tell the machine what you want and it's done.
You do have to know how to use technology otherwise it can be frustrating.
QuickChek does the same. Doesn't make them better

I don't know how the subway stores survive in NJ unless you just like bread for your sandwich with no meat. Jersey Mikes and Quik Chek are much better.

Anyone that thinks mikes , subway or even taste subs is a great sub has never tasted a real sub from up north with real bread and great meats.

Riddle & Martin in South River gets my vote. Jersey Mike's subs are skimpy and overpriced in my humble opinion!

Tastee in Franklin Park is definitely still open. Ate there for lunch yesterday.
Wow, sorry about that. I could have sworn it was closed up good, when I drove by the last few times. Good news!

This thread runs every 6 months or so when we are between seasons or totally bored with the product on the field.. Obviously this version has nothing to do with the former. :sunglasses:. I find that taste and quality are not always the deciding factor with those of us over a certain age .It is more about memories of a particular time and place and venues that served us greasy mounds of fat and oil . Greasy Tony's comes to mind..With the youngins', whose colons have not been ripped to shreds from eating in sub shops on a regular basis yet, it is probably more about taste and quality. .Eat up guys. Someday you will be the nostalgic ones around here.

Got me thinking of a late night buzzed craving for a Little Teddy's Hot Roast Beef and Melted Provolone...or that other place on Easton about 2 blocks up from Old Queens towards the Bull Pen. Melt in your mouth good.

Ahhhh, Greasy Tony's. Extra onions, 10 cents; extra tomato 10 cents; extra grease --- no charge.

I think that (and Im sure someone will take this the wrong way) we have a lot of first generation and immigrants here where the idea of the sub sandwich isn't exactly part of their culture. Also the idea of mom and pop stores are declining, the world is turning into chains everywhere. Its also cheaper at Subway. Chains like Subway and Dominos are ingrained in advertisement. Young people too love convenience over flavor and this is true even at Rutgers, do you think hungry 15 year old boys think of deli subs when they are walking to a strip mall..no they only know of chains. Another reason people go is that its always the same everywhere, some people like that familiarity of knowing exactly what they will get...might be garbage but to each his own.

Southerners and Mid-westerners like the soft tasteless mush that masquerades as bread at Subway. I gave up on them as soon as Jersey Mikes came to Lynchburg about 10 years ago. Thank God for Jersey Mikes.

Yeah Jersey Mike's is my go to now that I live in South Carolina. There are some good sandwich shops in Charleston that have comparable products to delis in Northern NJ (actual good bread and meats) but for a quick sandwich Jersey Mike's isnt that far removed from a standard deli. It's leagues better than Subway.

Both are awful. Jersey Mike's is slightly less awful.

Can't believe you guys in Jersey would actually eat at either of those places.

Some truth to this, though Jersey Mikes is better than you give credit. I have gotten to know the owners here in Westfield so they pretty much get our business most weekends.

But if you live in Central or North Jersey, you have access to some of the best Deli shops in the country outside of NYC. Jersey Deli > any sub chain.

Subway is flavored cardboard.

All good, especially A&A in Lincoln Park. Also, Il Paninos in Fairfield, which uses Calandra's bread.

I can't understand how people eat at Subway. The meat always looks plastic and utterly unappetizing.

And talk about too many chemical preservatives. Eat at Subway a few times and you can rest assured that your esophagus, stomach and intestines will remain perfectly intact long after your bones turn to dust in your graves. Probably your tongue too.

So at least you'll have that going for you.

The bread at Subway has the most appeal. But a Mom & Pop sub place will almost always be better.

For those of you who grew up in the North Plainfield area, compare J-Vees to any chain place. You just can't. Now that I live in North Jersey, the kosher delis are the best...unless it's Saturday and you want a sandwich :)

Hershey's in Westfield was always a favorite growing up.

But for the sake of this thread, Jersey Mike's demolishes Subway.

Any place that doesn't slice the meat to order, you know is a bad sign. The best sub I ever had was this little shop on Route 34 in Colts Neck that I am pretty sure is out of business. They had their bread delivered fresh everday from Brooklyn and had top of the line Boars Head. I grew up eating Demarco's in Matawan who had great bread, but not like this. It had such a hidden location, but it was awesome.

Calandras bread is my favorite . Some knucklehead just posted subway has the best bread. Loser!
While I won't get into the name calling, I agree about Calandras being the best bread. And Subway bread sucks almost as bad as the rest of their product.
