per Mike Bonner. Not a huge loss, he wasn't going to play anyway, but odd that he was only here a couple of months.

I guess it's sink or swim with Sobiesk kicking FG's then

Maybe he will make a big jump this season having spent the whole offseason knowing he would be the kicker instead of being in a battle for the job with Bell. Perhaps that's just wishful thinking, but we have to be solid in the kicking game if we are going to break through and win some games we shouldn't.

Who is Bill Martin? Sounds like a crotchety old man. Don't know why he would give Bonner stick for reporting McGrath's departure. It is definitely newsworthy as kicker is probably the position with the most question marks this year and McGrath transferred in to compete for the kicking job I thought.

He's MSU's director of media relations for football.

I am going to take it that Sobiesk has improved. He is in the same frat with

my daughters boyfriend and they say the guy is an all american type person with a 4.0 in biological sciences. Here's hoping he has found himself in the FG department.

Thanks for clarifying. I don't think our football media relations director should be trying to pick fights with the media that covers the team, especially over something innocuous like a kicker transferring. At least Gregg Ellis had a good point when he had his spat with Andy Katz about Rick Ray's "17 you" to Marshall Henderson. Martin comes off looking childish.

Yea, agreed. I don't know why he's making it a big deal. Especially when there were press releases about him transferring in and he's been a pretty hot topic most of the summer. Bonner was simply reporting he left the team and most every MSU board is talking about it... It seems newsworthy to me.

Sounds more like the 3 of them are being catty with each other BUT

I do think it is unprofessional of Martin to use 'a player that was never going to play' as a platform for doing it.

I hope it works out. I know of an all-state kicker at a 6A school within an hour and a half of Starkville who met with a coach back in the spring and was told "walk-on kickers come out of the woodwork" so he decided to concentrate on his studies instead. He started getting texts from the staff a couple weeks ago but I believe that ship has sailed.

former Tupelo Kicker was going to walk-on. Did he make it or is this whom you mention?

Thanks,

Got to be a first, a MSU message board taking up for a Clarion Ledger beat writer. History was made this day.

Graves has reportedly done well too. McGrath was option 3.

Yeah. I doubt that he would be leaving if he's in a horse race for FG duties. The fact of him leaving supports the "never going to play." Remember that he walked-on a Michigan too.

Or maybe he got mad that he wasn't Walk-On MVP.**

Not to be Johnny Raincloud or Captain Obvious in the same post, but if we don't get our 17'n kicking game together this year it WILL cost us one if not two close games.

So someone please tell me that Sobiesk or this true freshman are going to improve our field goal game this year? God forbid Sobiesk gets hurt and we're down to one kicker. The kicking game is what will give me an aneurysm this year. How hard is it to recruit a 17'n kicker..?

Seriously, if "walk-on kickers come out of the woodwork" as a coach allegedly said, then why don't we have one?

Having a bad kicking game doesn't get near the attention as does a bad offense/defense or bad overall recruiting. It seems like the attitude is that that having a good kicking game is sufficient, but not necessary, for a great season.

With the current status of the SEC West being so difficult, along with our place in the pecking order, a good kicking game could be the difference maker for us... But sadly I'll take mediocre at this point.

Yeah, what bothers me about it not that the media guys are heckling each other, but that he seemed to disparage a player. I know that this guy decided to leave State, but I wouldn't think our staff members should be referring to him as completely insignificant.

Its just such a stupid mentality- to view kickers as a dime a dozen. They score the most points on the team(at least they should if good). There were so many times last season when we could have used points from a missed FG or could have used an FG attempt instead of going for it on 4th.

Our kicking game has consistently been total **** for well over a decade now. That's counting punting, kick offs, and FGs.

Punting has been pretty strong the last few years. I'm pretty sure we were first in the nation last year, or the year before, in punt return yards allowed. Kickoffs and FGs have been less than stellar.
