I heard that Scott Stricklin was the reason Champ died and John Cohen had iron-clad proof and threatened to make it public if Keenum didn’t give him the AD job.
To prevent a huge black eye to the university, Keenum agreed to allow Stricklin to quietly resign and take a job wherever he could get one. I’m not sure where he ended up, but I heard it was some backwater north Florida town. Keenum agreed that Cohen could be the AD for 5 years, but after that, “you need to start shopping around”.
Cohen, unable to find leverage on Keenum in the span of 5 years, called his buddy Butch Thompson and asked him if he had any dirt on Allen Greene at Auburn. Butch told him no, but that football is looking really shaky. Cohen asked him if he would tank the postseason, but Butch told him “no” because he he wanted to keep his job. Butch said the best he could do was “tank against the SEC teams so our SOS stays high for next season. Besides, if we lose to Ole Miss, so what? Not like they’re going to win out anyway, right?”
Months later, Greene is out and Cohen is in.
Now, obviously, I wasn’t in the room for these calls, but I have a very reliable source in the AD office (horshack, it’s horshack) feeding me this intel.***
