Didn't see that one coming. Between the Angels and the Dodgers, there's a lot of money being paid out. The Yankees are going to be mad.

Is this 100%v last I heard it was just rumored.

Either way, Angels handled it like a boss. Let the other teams get in the mix, fight it out, see if you like the market, then go from there.

With the addition of Grienke the Dodgers became the first team since 99 I believe to have a higher payroll than the Yankees. This probably puts the Angels close to being above them now too. Since the Gugenheimer (sp) group took over the Dodgers they have spent over 600 million on total player contracts when adding in the lifetime of the contracts. 600 million!! This is after buying the Dodgers for 2 billion. They are negotiating a new tv deal expected to be around 6 billion dollars. The Dodgers annual payroll sits at roughly 225 million dollars in just player salaries. The A's made the playoffs over the Angels and their payroll is at 1/5th the cost (guessing). The Giants won the WS and their payroll is 100+ million less than the Dodgers.

That's about what they did last year.

They are going to have some bad contracts to deal with down the road with some aging players.

They get an incremental $100 MM/yr out of their new $3B, 20 year TV deal. I doubt bad long term contracts are keeping the Angels upper mgt up at night. Besides, unless something catastrophic happens, they should gain pay back on the Pujols/Hamilton deals long before those guys are shut down.
