Sun Herald's Top JUCO recruits in Mississippi

The sixth-ranked Bulldogs (4-1, 2-0 South Division) have sent players to Division I schools across the nation, a list that includes Alabama, Mississippi State, Southern Miss and North Texas.</p>

"It's really nice on Saturdays where you can come home from work, turn on the TV and see your former players," Campbell said. "Our guys are all over the place."</p> </div> <div id="story_assets"> <div id="featured_assets"> Noseguard Terrance Cody, a projected first-round pick in next year's NFL Draft, has made a huge splash at Alabama. Running back Dantrell Savage, who played at Gulf Coast and Oklahoma State, is a reserve for the Kansas City Chiefs. </div> </div> <div id="story_text_remaining">

Alabama play-by-play announcer Eli Gold, who recently released a book "From Peanuts to the Pressbox," is impressed with the Bulldog program.</p>

"You'd be silly not to recruit Mississippi Gulf Coast," Gold said. "It's a very fertile JUCO area. You don't want everyone going to Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Cody is a classic example. He's matured physically and a big athlete."</p>

Two Gulf Coast players now start at Mississippi State: linebacker Chris White and kicker Sean Brauchle.</p>

National recruiting analysts have recognized Gulf Coast's amazing stretch of two MACJC state championships and a co-NJCAA national title, all of which came under Campbell.</p>

"Steve has done a tremendous job there at Perk," said Steve Robertson, who covers Mississippi recruiting for Scout.com. "He understands how to recruit as well as anybody, and he makes the most of his out-of-state slots. Probably the best thing about him is that he really cares for those kids.</p>

"They aren't just a means to an end. He sees them as people, and he wants to see them go on and get a degree somewhere. While Gulf Coast has produced a ton of talent, it is not run like a football factory.</p>

Gulf Coast has another talented crop this season. Seven players already have D-I scholarship offers.</p>

The Bulldogs' 6-foot-8 bookends of James Carmon and Wayne Dorsey are ranked No. 1 and 3 on the Sun Herald's Top 10 list of junior college prospects.</p>

Carmon puts Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Penn State atop his list of schools. Dorsey is interested in Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State and South Florida.</p>

"Coming to Gulf Coast was the best thing that happened to me," Carmon said. "They made a man out of me. Coach Campbell is always pushing me to do my best and play harder."</p>

Two Bulldogs have verbally committed to Troy: quarterback Greg Jenkins and wide receiver Brett Moncrief.</p>

Wide receiver Kelvin Boldin (Arkansas State, North Texas), defensive back Dameon Jackson (Ole Miss, Southern Miss, South Florida, Alabama) and running back Vick Ballard (Troy) are the Bulldogs' other top recruits with offers.

The MFers that are wanting to sign no more than 5 JUCOs in this class, please report to the top of the page." "Please bring with you your best argument for this position."

I have heard some say 5-8 players at the most. I think we have 3 on board now and have priority on something like 3 more. Newton and the two big bastards hanging at Perk Beach. Are there any OL out there worth tempting fate like we did during our Rosebowl run?

It takes 5-8 years to build a program! Just because there is talent in MS that can walk on the field and make an immediate impact does not mean that we should just go recruiting them. If you had a crappy recruiting class a couple of years ago, you just have to sit back and wait for your freshmen to mature. This is the same crap Jackie tried to pull on us in the 90's, and look where it got him. I for one won't stand for it.

1. We only have 12 or 13 Seniors- plus a few that Mullen runs off into Bolivian. Jucos are used to starting and playing, and should that not happen for some, attitudes could go South. We have alot of players returning.

2. Juco's are hit and miss. Some turn our great, and some turn out like Jackie's Arizona class.

3. We only need a CB, DL, QB, OL, and a WR. Well, make that 2 CB's.</p>

I just think bringing in 5-6 each year and developing the younger guys is the way to go. They are fill-ins where your roster may be lacking talent. We got 5 or 6 last year, and doing the same this year will be just as beneficial providing we make good choices.</p>

the JUCO prospects are worth a ****.

I think we need TWO EACH JUCO: DL, WR, CB. And I say we need THREE JUCO OLs. I recognize, however, that quality JUCO OLs are in extremely short supply. I at least want 2 JUCO OLs in this class.

In essence, you and I agree with the exception of the total number of JUCOs we think are necessary in this class. I would agree with your position in virtually any other signing class.

The only reason you bring in a JUCO OL is to start.

Sherrod is here another year.
T. Smith needs a solid backup due to his injury history, but he is a player.
Brignone is back and firmly entrenched.
Saulsberry has actually been decent.
A. Lawrence has been very good. Maybe not great, but I doubt you will find someone better in JUCO that is willing to come.

Assuming they all stay healthy, I am comfortable with that line next year. We still have Freeman and Melichar for depth. Who knows what we have in Gabe Jackson and Sam Watts. If anything, next year will be a time to look at taking more than 1 JUCO OL.

I definitely think we need one JUCO Guard, but that is it from the JUCO ranks. Sign a JUCO OG and two HS linemen and hand them over to Balis for 2 years.

Is Freeman contributing? Real disappointment as far as I am concerned.</p>

I agree that the starters have been surprisingly serviceable, I just fall into the camp that believes you better have plenty of OLs to deal with injuries. Again, it's just my opinion and one that might be pretty ****** at that.

Has T. Smith ever played a down for us? I hope he's a player, and I think he might be, but at this point any contribution we ever get from him is just a bonus in my mind. I'm not counting on him for anything.

If we get the two linemen at MGCCC and Newton at QB plus Rashad Henry at PRCC and the two others committed we have, we have had a hell of a year. All of them will play next year and we need players now. Once we start winning, we can then build with high school players.

Did he have a black t-shirt on? There was a monster of a human being being shown on the jumbotron at some point during the LSU game. And by monster, I mean incredible hulk huge- except he was black, not green.

What redshirt OL's do we have coming out next year? I'm thinking you lay off the Juco OL's unless there is an absolute stud RT available and sign the best HS OL you can find and redshirt all of them.
