I have it from a very close friend in the Athletic Dept. that shall remain nameless that we offered the job to Chris Petersen and he said he needed the weekend to mull it over. Apparently, he didn't even wait the weekend and accepted the job via phone. The contract we are going to give him is going to make him the 4th highest paid coach in the SEC. You heard it here first.... HD6......you are awful.....

Man I hope you are right, but I was told by another that he said not interested. Hoping my guy is wrong and yours is right. He was my first choice.

see, i've heard that we'll be paying close to that, but for most of the guy's whose names keep popping up i don't think they're worth it. maybe we're just willing to pay that

nor do I believe it is Fat Phil, Derek DooDoo or Tommy West. I believe Bryne will hire someone in between those coaches, preferably closer to the Petersen side than on the West side of the list. Anyone who believes Chris Petersen is coming is living in Fantasyland.

kind of money down. Even if it meant leaving Idaho for Mississippi. (That came out bad). Especially with Kelly interviewing at Washington.

Personally, I think that Kelly is waiting to see if/when the Notre Dame job comes open. I have a feeling that we are going to try to get him and that we don't and end up with Graham at Tulsa.

But for some reason, if we got him, and Weis didn't get fired until 2009 or 2010, I wonder if he'd bail after 1 or 2 years.

Kelly would be a home run in my book.

We apparently told Peterson the MSU jet could leave be ready to leave in 5 minutes to fly up there and he told us thanks but no thanks. Same source said Dooley and Patterson are next on the list.</p>

Winning at La Tech with nothing. Coached with Saban for at least 5 years. Has run his own program.

I didn't like him at first, but he's growing on me.

and he went 7-5. I would say he's winning. He has a winning overall conference record.

He's in the WAC, which means he may, at best, have WAC talent. Probably not.

So would Bowden or Fulmer. They would get a giant YAWN from the fan base, recruits, media.

This is the SEC!! Are you telling me Dooley can hold his own with Nutt, Richt, Miles, Tubbs, Saban, Spurrier, etc., etc??

naturally, I would offer Patterson first.

Im just stunned anyone would dislike Dooley so much they would post what costanza posted.

but if we don't get Petersen or Patterson (which we likely won't), we aren't going to hire anyone that excites the majority of the fanbase. Hell, bowden is the Nutt of the ACC and even he would get a yawn.

They may be a damn good coach, but they aren't going to have everyone jumping up and down.

Do you just like to make snap decisions and render harsh judgment? You have complained about Croom until we got rid of him. Dooley took over at Tech after a three win season and has won 5 and 7 games in two years. In other words, they have improved. He's not my first choice by a long shot, but I see no need to condemn the hire as one that is so terrible that someone would not buy tickets before the guy has coached a game.

Also if we hire Dooley, I hope it's for about 1 million dollars. There's no way we need to spend big money on a such a weak candidate - a two year 12-12 isn't worth 2 million dollars.

I simply asked "what's not to like about him?" He'd been in my viable pool of candidates though.

Seriously, outside of Petersen and Patterson, what names have come up that are significantly more exciting and better to most of the fanbase?

I can't think of any.

Costanza raised the point that he was 12-12 and it was in the WAC. But he has WAC talent, so its a level playing field. The question is: are they getting better? Who cares if they are in the WAC? Is there some coach that would have gone 10-2 there this year b/c its the WAC? No, b/c La Tech has WAC talent....if that.

We could argue this all day. But the guy learned under Saban, has La Tech getting better, and has run his own program.

A guy who is 12-12 excites you? Make you want to buy tickets? Has Croom lowered our standards that much?

I want, in this order:

1. A proven winner (PROVEN) at the D-I level, like a Patterson.
2. A coordinator at a bigger name school with proven success at his job that is looking to move up to a head coaching gig.
3. A proven winner at a lower-level school looking to move up. (In the mold of Jim Tressel, Paul Johnson, etc.)

Dooley went 7-5 this year, but beat 3 of the worst teams in the WAC, plus a Croom-led squad. What exactly does that prove? Might as well add Terry Bowden and Jim Donnan to the list.

Dooley, Fulmer = giant yawn and no immediate bandwagon support from me. Dooley or Fulmer would be hires that Larry Simpleton would make. I have come to expect more from Byrne.

Edit to add: By proven winner, I also mean someone who doesn't consistently underachieve, like Bowden or Fulmer have done recently.

I know everyone on here is estatic about Petersen, but he has only been a HC one year longer than Dooley. While his win-loss record is much better, he inherited a well built program (Nutt, Hawkins), while Dooley inherited crap.

I do think Petersen is a better coach and would be the better hire, however, there may not be as much difference as some on here are claiming.
