The university did not go into further detail about why he was paid that much except that it paid “gross-up payments” to Cristobal and others — payments that cover income taxes so that the recipient receives a set amount of pay.

The $14.9 million in “other” pay for Cristobal also is believed to cover the $9 million buyout he owed to Oregon for breaking his coaching contract there to return to Miami, his alma mater.

Not necessarily, just because that's what ADs tend to do- make sure their guy is paid competitively. da U is a private university, and they apparently have a huge donor bankrolling their mediocrity. Different story with Rutgers. Just thought it was an interesting story since we just beat da U in the bowl game. Perhaps at some level, since Greg is/was Mario's mentor, he may see the story and wonder if some big money is out there. But he seems happy back in NJ and at Rutgers.

You are right. That is what AD's do. Perhaps, the agent for some coach out there entering the final year of his contract is going to see this story, omit the details (like the payout to Oregon), and say "Well, from what I hear $$22M is what the big boys are paying these days. So you should pay my guy that!" and the AD's legs will tremble in fear and open up the checkbook without looking into it any further.

I didn't realize that Mario is just 4 year years younger than Schiano. Beyond that, Miami can't be too thrilled with Mario's 2 year record of being under 500 in the relatively weak ACC given the amount of home-grown football talent available in Florida and Miami's somewhat shady history of providing recruiting incentives to commit which far pre-dated the NIL era.

Mario is being fairly compensated for previously demonstrated results.

One of college football’s most highly regarded coaches, Cristobal returned to his alma mater after leading the University of Oregon to three straight Pac-12 Conference championship game appearances and two Pac-12 titles. He is the only coach in the nation whose team has played in a Power Five conference championship game in each of the past three seasons.

As with most things, things take time, but Miami is sparing no expense for success. Their boosters paid Cam Ward $2M for these season. He is the missing piece and should put Miami in contention for the ACC Championship and a playoff spot. If Miami wins an ACC Championship, he’d be totally worth it.

The kids weren’t getting the job done in the weight room. He’s got a chance to win big this year, but even if he doesn’t, he has the security of a 10 year, $80M contract. I think he gets at least 5 years.

What an idiot Cristobal was. He could have come to Rutgers back in 2012 and I’m sure we could have paid him $800k a year. Fast forward 12 years and we could be paying him $900k a year. Oh well, his loss.
