Latest example of our embarrassing non-football facilities

Tonight's RU volleyball match in a rain delay. The Barn is a joke of a facility for a varsity B1G team to be playing in. To add to the embarrassment Jim Delany is at the match as part of his visit here this weekend.

Actually, having JD there for something like this, might be a good thing when you think about it (and I highly doubt there has never been a "leak," at another B1G venue, during his tenure...com'on Shill not the end of the world...).

p.s. - not defending our facilities!

Of course it's not the end of the world and I know nothing about B1G v'ball facilities but the Barn can not be up to standards.

Our facilities are not unknown to Jimbo. He vetted the university and facilities prior to inviting us, and knew what he was up against. So far the TV numbers back up his decision to invite us, so if anything he should be feeling slightly squeamish about not fronting us some money to upgrade the facilities. We've brought the conference ****-tons of money and we are starving on the vine. Maybe this is the impetus for him to respond more favorably to Julie's requests to expedite some of the BTN payout.

Actually is great that he is there. I think some people on our campus need a reminder that the B1G money is not a charity and RU needs to start acting like a B1G school.

Aside from women's soccer and basketball, and wrestling, which programs are not at the bottom of the conference?

It is completely unacceptable.

Nothing a little duck tape and gorilla glue can't fix.

Seriously though, an upgrade to the Barn is sorely needed. Actually, we should probably just demolish the Barn altogether and start fresh.

Has Julie asked for more $$??
Yes, several times, and Jimbo, in his own nice way, says no, we have to wait for our BTN buy-in to be effected until we see real cash. I cannot imagine that he is not in Barchi's ear saying that the university needs to get its own **** together and fund some of these facilities, but even a Jersey native such as Jimbo may have underestimated the weeniness of the administration and the political cesspool that New Jersey is. And God forbid Christie ever make a move to brainstorm and raise some capital for the state university of NJ, whose athletics, like it or not, are bringing attention to Rutgers and our state.

Does anyone know where Mr. Screw was when these leaks were taking place? Just checking, because he is a Rutgers institution unto himself and we have to make sure he is safe.

Yes, knock down the only thing with character at that spot so everyone can look at Brower, the Student Center, and that giant Chabad House and think what a depressing campus.

May as well knock down Old Queens and the Zeta Psi house while you're at it.

What I've noticed is that over the decades things take a long time to change at RU. Part of me wishes that J. Delany's (sp) presence would encourage Barchi and the Trustees to allocate money to either repair or renovate some of these facilities.

I believe that is called "moving at the speed of bureaucracy". All it probably needs is a visit from this guy, but Fac/Maint has to add it to the list, prioritize it, etc.

Last spring the softball team finished 7th in the regular season out of 14. Everyone else was at or near the bottom. We've got a lot of work to do as a department.

Outside of football and maybe wrestling, we don't have one sport that is up to standards from a facility perspective.

Our lax facilities are horrible and that is being kind. We need massive investments across the board, just to be in the realm of competitive.

NJ and the administration should be ashamed of what they present to their athletes.

I stopped by the softball field after Homecoming - I'd never seen it before. My daughter's high school field (metro Atlanta area) is probably better overall than the Rutgers one (although those dugouts do look awesome with the facelift!) We have a long way to go in facilities, no doubt. The Death Star might have to wait for other priorities.

Unfortunately wrestling isn't even close. They practice at the Barn in terrible conditions. There isn't even enough room for mats so they have to alternate for mat time. Its a mess.

It's not Jimmy D's job to do JH's and Barchi's job. However, he might be willing and Interested in helping these two lure in well heeled donors by taking them on tours of RU's facilities and then taking them on tours at OSU, TTFP, NB etc. And showing them what is and what could be.

Exactly. When the *** are they breaking ground on the Livingston basketball/wrestling parking deck?

NO! The BARN is an RU ICON. I remember practicing there when I was on the Fencing Team, in '46.

I remember some years back the Women's Big East tournament at UConn was delayed because the roof in Gampel sprung a leak.

Anyway the politicians are too busy giving $$ to PA to help the 76ers build new facilities -

Gotta agree this is a great thing that just happened. Mother nature just gave us a hand. Having the guy who holds the purse strings have to sit there during a delay watching a leaking roof has to be an eye opener for him. Especially if Julie has championed the campaign that we need more money now and he has declined us. Delany now has the ammunition necessary to go to the other schools and demand more money now. Julie now has ammunition to go to Barchi. However, his plan will be just to re-tar the roof. What an asshat he is.They did it for Maryland why not us. Like you pointed out the numbers show the move was a success money wise.

Rutgers has done a pretty good job in the past raising money for large projects for the academic side, like the fund for distinction. They need to do the same thing for a fund for athletics distinction.

If The Barn was knocked down, you could have a grass field in commemoration of the first college football game. And Brower may not be long for this world. Records Hall is to be demolished under the master plan, I think.

The barn is a great old gym for small crowd events. Sure it needs some TLC, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

They do plan to renovate and expand the barn in the master plan. They're keeping the classic federalist core and expanding into the parking lot to create a modern rec center. The annex is going to be demolished and there is supposed to be a memorial to the first football game in it's place.

Who knows when that will actually happen though.
