Greetings from Bayside High School in Virginia Beach for Homecoming as the Marlins at 4-1 overall play host to the visiting First Colonial Patriots (1-5) on this second Saturday of October 2025.

We'll have updates here and via Twitter or 'X' @hatfieldsports

Want to apologize up front that we do not have a printed First Colonial roster at our disposal, so we will have to refer to any players by number until we get names. We do have a Bayside one fortunately.

First Colonial goes 3 & out offensively on its first series, all on run plays. Credit to sophomore defensive lineman Freddie Eubanks and senior defensive lineman Will Johnson for making stops behind the line of scrimmage.

After the FC punt and a holding on the return by Bayside, the Marlins begin their first series at their own 32 with 10:32 left in the first quarter.

Nice opening series on offense for Jon White's Marlins. It is capped by Kyron Brown's 22-yard TD run after QB Kam Kirby completes his first three passes for 32 yards, two of which went to Seven Washington for a total of 28 yards.

Coach White has liked what his offense - directed by assistants Jaquan Glover and Todd Buttermore - is dialing up this year. Coming in, the Marlins are averaging 39.2 points per game, hitting for at least 20 in every contest so far in 2025.

First Colonial's second possession starts at their own 45 with 8:29 to go in the first quarter. Bayside senior defensive lineman Ashton Smith (6-3, 300) is proving to be disruptive to the Patriots running game. The Patiot do get a gain of 8 on a QB keeper from Micah Hathaway (hey, we got one name for FC!). However, just when they are about to go for it on 4th & 6 from their own 49, an illegal procedure penalty backs the Patriots up and brings the punting unit out.

A 25-yard punt by FC is downed at the Bayside 31 with 7:14 to go in the opening stanza.

Kam Kirby unleashed a beautiful deep ball to Breon Hardnett, one play after connecting with senior Seven Washington for a 28-yard completion.

The curl pattern / hitch route was wide open for the host Marlins, then they got the deep shot to put them inside the 10.

It has gone from bad to worse for First Colonial. After their first completion of the day on a quick screen delivered by QB Micah Hathaway, his receiver that hauls it in has the ball jarred loose - believe by junior LB Isaiah Newton - about after moving forward two yards. It is recovered by Byside junior DB Kyron Brown, who has been a takeaway machine this season with five interceptions coming into this contest.

The Marlins have it at their own 37 with 5:45 to go in the first period.

That latest Bayside scoring drive felt like it took FOREVER because of so many penalties on Bayside. Believe it or not, the Marlins have been flagged 11 times already for 85 yards. About three of them were on kickoff infractions.

Bayside actually used a fake punt on 4th & 9 from their own 37, converted by junior J'Lahni Spears on a gain of 43. The TD to freshman Jy'Aire Collins - who two interceptions in the big win over Salem earlier this season - came on a 3rd & 12 play.

FC's fourth series will start at their own 20 with just over two minutes to go in the first period.

This margin could actually be much worse if not for some of the self-inflicted wounds by Bayside via infractions. The Marlins were flagged 11 times for 85 yards in that opening frame, compared to just one penalty for five yards on the visiting Patriots.

Bayside will need to clean up some of the discipline parts before the big showdown with Green Run next week. This simply is a tune-up where plenty of reserves are expected to see playing time in the second half.

A holding penalty during the punt return limits Breon Hardnett from a longer gain on special teams. It ends up being a 27-yard return and the Marlins begin their fourth series at the FC 45 with 11:45 to go in the second period.

Following a 14-yard completion from QB Kam Kirby to WR Seven Washington, the Marlins keep it on the ground with Kyron Brown. They get the running game executed and also do a nice job with a 4th & 1 from the 22 as Kirby keeps it around the edge for nine yards.

Junior TE Kamari Eubanks did a nice job on that TD connection from Kam Kirby to Seven Washington. You say why? He did his part running vertically, occupying the seam and the defense left Washington unaccounted for to haul in the easey TD.

FC's fifth series begins with a bad snap and a fumble, recovered by Bayside senior Brandon McCants at the 10-yard line of the Patriots with 8:31 to go in the half.

This game is starting to take on the look of Bayside's 67-0 drubbing of Princess Anne in the season opener. Of course, FC is coming off its first win of the season, holding on to beat PA 20-13 last week.

The question here is will the running clock begin before or after half-time? Ordinarily, the rule is not until after intermission... but some rumbling up here in the pressbox is it may start prior to the break. You won't get a complaint from me if it does.

First Colonial moves the chains for the first time in the contest! It's a beautiful run worth 12 yards by No. 10. Again, wish I had his name to shout him out, but we sadly lack a printed out roster at our disposal up here in the pressbox.

However, that just made the Bayside defense mad. Freddie Eubanks, Marquis Miles, Isaiah Newton, Will Johnson and Ashton Smith all have tackles for loss in the half. A few of them were in on those stops and bring up 4th & 20 for the Patriots.

Punter No. 17 for FC booms a 57-yard punt for the Patriots. One of the best punts I've seen all year. He could be an All-District / All-Region candidate.

While the Marlins out-gained FC 386 to minus 3 in that first half, they left some point out there on the field. That included a 13-play drive that started at their own 6 and ended at the FC 12 with time running out. They also committed 15 penalties for 118 yards, so it wasn't quite an A or A+ showing.

They probably will neeed something like that to halt the 50-game Beach District winning streak of Green Run (57 when you count the wins over Beach foes in the playoffs) coming up on Friday, October 17th. It will also be Green Run's Homecoming.

We'll give you some more numbers in a bit as the half-time Homecoming parade is underway here at Bayside...

Running clock to start the second half.

Bayside failed to score on its opening possession due to a fumble around the FC 27-yard line. However, the Pariots go 3 & out and the Marlins.

The fabulous freshman Jy'Aire Collins catches a pass underneath from QB Kam Kirby, then puts the jets on as he turns up field for about 20 of those 35 yards he scampered to the house.

Kirby has played a very fine, error-free game today. The Marlins are able to convert the two-point conversion on another pitch to junior TE Kamari Eubanks (6-2, 180), who looks the part of a prospect for the next level.

This Bayside team is much-improved from last year's 6-5 finish and a lot has to do with the return from Indian River of Kirby, who played his first two seasons in a Marlins uniform.

End 3rdQ - Bayside 50, First Colonial 0

To start the fourth quarter, it's FC completing a 64-yard pass from QB Micah Hathaway to #16, who we believe is sophomore Dallas Tyler. We say believe because again we don't have an official roster (and am going off HUDL at this point).

FC Coach Lemort Smith told me he was very high on his sophomor class and I believe #16 is one of those guys he mentioned. Young fellas has some burst and good awareness out there.

Firm tackle from d-lineman Ashton Smith after another nice gain from Tyler (we assume) on an 8-yard catch. But on 3rd & 7, it's another completion by Hathaway to move the chains for the fourth time I do believe.

It should've dawned on me earlier and I wasn't thinking, but I actually have found / discovered an FC roster thanks to Cox stat guru Doug Ripley from their game earlier in the season against the Falcons.

If only I knew that earlier!! I will try to go back in and fill in some of the names... or at least pass along who did what in a final stats post for those of you that care.

So the shutout is avoided for FC and the Marlins are unable to get their second of the year.

To be honest, I'm surprised that Brown - a two-way starter - is still in the game. And ditto for QB/DB Kirby.

Fortunately, Bayside has now subbed in its second unit on defense as FC will have it at their own 20 following the touchback.
