It's sort of amazing

that a guy as old and checked-out as Thad, who obviously ran out of 17s to give about this job about 10 years ago, is the better candidate by such a wide margin. Unrelated factions in and out of the state are pushing unbelievably hard for the reelection of a guy that would probably rather be playing bingo.

This is really misleading. The universities haven't publicly supported anyone. These are political action committees (PAC's). For instance Bully Bloc is a PAC made up of MSU alumni, but they are in no way affiliated with MSU. I'm pretty sure the same goes for the other two.

http://www.bullybloc.ms/home/

That said, almost everyone I know at MSU is supporting Cochran (including myself).

universities don't..............

private citizens that happen to work for universities can do whatever they want but they can't do it using their university title.

You think the university doesn't give any private influence to these PAC's?

No, I don't. The PACs are trying to do what they think it in the best interest of their respective universities, but I don't believe that the universities have any significant contact with them. Certainly, there are members of Bully Bloc who have influence within the university (Roy Ruby, for example), but it would be illegal for the universities to have any direct involvement with them.

That's a distinction that doesn't really mean anything. Of course the university isn't going to do something illegal like publicly support or endorse a political candidate. But you're kidding yourself if you think the Bully Bloc is anything but an agent of the university. Reminds me of when I used to work at Entergy. The company couldn't engage in political activities, but the EMPLOYEES could and we were "strongly encouraged" to join the EMPLOYEES of Entergy PAC.

McDaniel was busy today yelling at the Jackson Kroger Coffee Club

New York Times reporter was there to witness in person.

Teddy Schleifer @teddyschleifer

#
McDaniel
's first event this AM is with the coffee club at a Kroger in Jackson. 18 seniors meet here everyday to chat

Huge shouting match develops here in Jackson when #McDaniel confronted. Shouting, fingers pointed, tempers flare -- including McDaniel's.

#McDaniel's

All kidding aside, does anyone else feel cheated by the Cochran candidacy ? I know Hoseman wanted to run and there was probably another one or two qualified guys out there. The Cochran campaign has been sad to watch for two reasons 1) Thad`s mind is obviously slipping 2) There`s no way the man has another 6 years left in his tank. I honestly had no idea of his condition and feel like Haley and his posse had traditional republicans figured for idiots who would vote for Cochran regardless or his failing competency. I just feel a little cheated by this.

Not really a good sign when you piss off the blue hairs so bad they start yelling at you. The fact that McDaniel can't even talk to a bunch of old people without a confrontation says a lot about him.

I've never been encouraged to join Bully Bloc (I also work for the university and have worked on a couple of Republican campaigns in the past). I don't doubt that there is communication between the two, and that in general, Bully Bloc is taking a position that the university leaders would take if they officially could, but I don't think the connection is as strong as you think it is.

The interesting twist I didn't expect is I have heard from several old yellow dog Democrats that have been Repubs since the Goldwater/Nixon southern strategy that they will be voting for Childers if McDaniels wins, and maybe if Thad wins.

That`s my point, conservative voters are stuck with a choice between a whack and an old guy with one foot in LaLa land. I think we could have done better.

Thad has the opportunity to become Chairman of Appropriations if the Republicans win back control of the Senate, while McDaniel would go in a junior senator without the support of the Republican leadership to get appointments to meaningful committees. Why wouldn't the universities support Thad? Mississippians that seriously want to have an effect on the budget should really think about this. McDaniel will not be able to have an effect on anything for a long time as a newly elected senator representing a small faction of the Republican party.

My point was that this is another case of an entity that can't directly get involved in politics finding a way. The university doesn't need to "encourage" its employees to join Bully Bloc like Entergy needed to. It can just let Bully Bloc go directly to the alumni. Also don't mean to imply that anyone at the university is directly pulling the strings of the PAC. More that it's a lot like recruiting. The PAC knows what it's supposed to be doing and it does it. And if it needs a little nudge here or there, it will be done indirectly.

Yellow dog democrats, my ***. I haven't spoken to a single republican in Jackson that is voting for McDaniel in the general. It's pretty split between not voting and voting for Childers. Granted, I don't talk to anybody over 40 about politics because I don't like getting email forwards yelled at me.

I have a lot of friends who will be voting for McDaniel next week. But I'm seeing the same thing you are from the ones who are supporting Cochran. Very few of them would vote for McDaniel in November.

I've mentioned this before here. McDaniel attended the same high school I did - he was there after I graduated so while I do not know him-- a lot of my friends from my hometown know him and are McDaniel supporters. There are also people from my hometown who are supporting Cochran-- that said, they are outnumbered as McDaniel had well over 80 percent (maybe close to 90) of Jones County's votes.

I think people are assuming that if McDaniel wins, then Republicans will still vote for McDaniel over Childers. I think most people are right that there are not enough Republicans willing to cross the aisle if Thad doesn't win the primary. I don't think the ones who say they will vote for Childers actually will, but I don't think they will vote at all.

There's been some statistic floating around to the effect that if you can get something like 10 percent of the white people who normally vote republican to vote for you as a democrat, then you can win in MS. I don't think Childers can get 10 percent to switch sides, but I do think McDaniel can get 20 percent to stay at home.

That video is a perfect example of why, quite frankly, none of this matters. You disagree with me....therefore, you are a brain dead idiot who shouldn't be allowed to vote. I swear we were SO much better off before people started worshipping at the altars of Fox or MSNBC. Turn the radio and TV off and go outside with your kids....in the end we are choosing between a career politician and a future career politician. Utter nonsense.

There was a New York Times article last night about Thad and the election (good read) and I forget who but one of the big shots in Desoto said something like "We did this to ourselves. The Republican Party has done everything to convince it's members to vote for the candidate who publicly hates Obama the most." It's true. McDaniel is running largely on the platform that he'll repeal universal healthcare "and stop Obama!", when that's not even possible... But it's working SOMEHOW. The type of people who listen to conservative radio are showing up in hordes, enough to dethrone one of the most powerful men in America from what WAS the most secure seat in the senate.

The best part of the article was some hick from the delta arguing with people in the comments, because what's a national article about Mississippi without some uneducated clown arguing with New York Times readers representing all of us. The highlight was him complaining about how he rents section 8 housing and how the tenants were rude and lazy. Let that sink in.

I can't imagine being a voter right now. Thad is a lame duck even if he goes back. I think it's partly the realization that Mississippi's run on Washington is over that's causing people to lose it.

ETA: Dr. Wiseman is quoted in the article. Favorite professor I ever had. He told our class that Cochran is really hated up in Ohio because he robs hundreds of millions in research money that rightly should go to Ohio State but goes to what is a very undeserving MSU simply by being really, really good at his job.

Cochran-King of Pork...Our pork is good, their pork is bad. (Sheesh!)

No wonder this country is going downhill.

It's every man for himself. (No offense meant toward the non-male population.)

Let's hope he's not. Seriously, what has Cruz done? Fight the good fight against Obama? I'm a republican and would like to see some of the democrat shenanigans halted too, but just because you're loud and obnoxious that does not make you a good presidential candidate.

The one thing I didn't see mentioned in the thread is that the Democrats in Washington couldn't be any more proud of the spectacle that is the Mississippi Senate runoff. If we ultimately elect Childers which is entirely possible, this runoff could be the key to keeping Harry Reid in place as Senate majority leader. I suspect Travis Childers is a good man and could likely represent Mississippi better than McDaniel b/c he at least brings some Washington DC experience to the table, but the thought of 2 more years of Harry Reid is disturbing.

They really do this to themselves. I know the lure of having the chairman of the appropriations committee was huge, but you've got to get him elected first. Cochran should have retired 6 months ago and let Bryant appoint Greg Harper to serve the remaining year of the term. Harper would have crushed McDaniel in this election.

Gonna be hard for him, or anyone else to get appointed if he wins. There would be a special election to elect a senator to serve the remaining term. The Republican Party has 17ed up big-time on this.
