Much respect to him. It's very clear his teammates respect him.

I'm juvenile enough to note that this video now seems funny.

But seriously, best wishes to him at the next level and in life in general.

Wow, playing football must be amazing for this guy. First, he is talented enough to play the game at a high level. Second, he gets to hang out, shower, get sweaty, hit the hot tub, etc. with a bunch of young, very fit dudes almost every day....

Not sure if serious.

If serious, I suppose you think straight men shouldn't be OB/GYNs since the get to see naked women all day.

Professional people compartmentalize. Every interview of this guy indicates that he's a professional and a great teammate. If Mizzou players had no problem showering and playing with him I don't see why you should get a vote.

Takes a lot of courage to come out now, knowing that his draft stock will probably drop due to some NFL execs being uncomfortable drafting a gay player. I wish him the best of luck and support him 100%

I suspect 11.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss in the SEC will mean a lot more to the GMs than his sexual orientation will.

Awesome for him

And none of his teammates will care if he can make a tackle.its sad that this is a big deal, but that took some courage, especially before the draft.

I saw one of those ex-player commentators talking about this

Maybe even warren sapp, but they basically said they all knew they had gay teammates, and the only thing that matters is can they play. If they do, they got his back.

Well, hurray for him. I don't respect him anymore or any less. Basically he has told the world, "I prefer sucking dick and having other men poke me in the a$$"... Well, give him a gold medal.... I frankly don't care and would have prefered not knowing... I'm not homosexual... Does it make his and everyone else's world better knowing? I guess I do feel better about myself now that the "word is out" I'm not gay.... I think I'll call the New York Times tomorrow morning... Geeze..... Why do some gay folks think we really care?

He said he feared being outed, so he outed himself to retain some control over the event. It is a big deal for him, and it is a big deal for homosexuals in the future of the sport to have someone to look up to.

Like I said on twitter - most amazing thing is this was kept quiet by his team and allowed him to tell his side on his own terms.

I doubt it. He could have very well cost himself his NFL future tonight. Look what SI wrote:

"In blunt terms, they (8 anonymous NFL Executives) project a significant drop in Sam’s draft stock, a publicity circus and an NFL locker room culture not prepared to deal with an openly gay player. Sam, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, was projected as a mid- to late-round draft pick prior to his announcement."

Wait, I thought that kind of thing would destroy a locker room. If that Dline played less cohesive because of that, I'd hate to see what they'd do on the same page.

"Unprepared NFL locker room"...

This is conjecture. We'll see, though.

As an aside, I found the "It took a load off my chest" comment from Sam in the interview incredibly funny.

I was thinking the same thing. If some famous football player announced tomorrow that he is not gay, would the rest of the world give a rats? Hell, it wouldn't make the news.

by coming out, he outted them all. they were all gay, that's why they were so tight.

A realistic article.

Nice to see the real problem discussed objectively: namely the media circus this will create. I'm sure there are some teams who might take a chance on Sam and his now inherent publicity, but given the other doubts about his skills, there's no telling what round it might be. Unfortunately, the current tilt of our society means they'll blame it on homophobia instead of realizing they've helped create this situation.

Exactly. He's not going to be the only gay player in the league, and it's probably not much of a secret among the players which ones are gay. A couple of former Houston Oilers said a couple of months ago that there were a couple of gay players on the Oilers in the early 90s. Nobody cared.

He said one of the reasons he came out now was that he heard rumbling in the locker room when he was in Mobile for the Senior Bowl. This pretty much let him know that the secret hadn't been kept too well, and he wanted to maintain some respectability about the situation by announcing it on his own terms rather than waiting on a news story to break.

Why is this even an issue?

Does being gay make him a better player? A braver person? Who cares what type of person he prefers sexually?

I mean, not that there is anything wrong with it.

Reckon we'll never know, until some guy stands up on "Project Runway" and declares that he is NOT gay.

Because he's the first. I just put this on twitter but it's like school shootings. What happened in Pearl, MS would be scrolling on the ticker these days.

Yawn...irrelevant

Olympics are gay news
NFL is gay news
Grammys are gay news

Enough with the gay news.

As a straight guy, I don't know if I could handle this. I mean, think about showering with your teammates. You're all young, in good shape, and usually playing a game where you get sweaty and have to take long showers. Now when I'm cleaning the dirt off of my body and the guys next to me are wiping the sweat off of their bulging muscles, the last thing I want is a gay man next to me cleaning off his firm buttocks. I mean, if a straight guy can't enjoy a long shower with other toned men without someone else checking him out, then I wouldn't want to play football.*************

How so? It's true.

Unfortunately, one child getting shot at a high school would not get all the coverage it did in 1997.

Nine people got shot at Pearl. Two died. That's national news in 1997, 2007 and will be in 2017.
