I know there are a few horror stories about him out there but I don't care. I love him. Loved watching him coach and speak. He was pretty great as a commentator to, or at least i thought so. Legendary stories he'd tell.

I like him. My wife is a Notre Dame grad. Class of 88 or 89 (I forget). She was there for his national championship in her senior year. She has a picture of herself with him on campus hanging in our living room. Backstory: she and a study friend were just walking across campus one day very, very early in the morning and not many people at all were around. And there walking toward them was Lou Holtz. He stopped and chatted them up for about 15 minutes. Wanted to know what they were studying, where they were from, what they wanted to do with their lives. My wife was impressed by how genuine and humble he was. She just happened to have one of those old fashioned Kodak cameras in her purse left over from the day before when her parents were visiting. So she got the picture.
He has his flaws. But I think he is a really decent guy

He certainly exceeded expectations, despite having a massive speech impediment

Your wife must have graduated in 88. ND beat WV for the national championship in the Fiesta Bowl. Barry Alvarez was the DC for ND.

Great person who truly got it. Amazingly positive and he saw the good in anything. I used to listen to him on XM radio Saturday mornings and he always had a segment where he spoke from the heart about life and how to be grateful. Something that is missing in this dipshit society

I saw him speak on the convention circuit in the '90s.

He started by talking about his wife and family, saying he had four children and all but three of them were boys.

He then told a story about interviewing for the Minnesota job in 1984.

"I asked what kind of team the Gophers had in '83 and they told me 'We lost to Nebraska by only 10.' It wasn't until after I took the job and moved to Minneapolis that I learned it was 10 touchdowns."

He was also a magician.
