More "genius" from you, Hermy. From today's Washington Post:

One month into the shutdown, 45 percent of surveyed Americans ascribe the blame for it to Republican lawmakers and President Trump, according to a new Washington Post/ABC poll released Thursday. Democrats received 33 percent of the blame, while 22 percent of survey respondents said they were not sure.

Lol.. Did the Washington Post vote 13 times against a CR democrats voted for dozens of times prior when TRUMP wasn't the president?

Get out of your own way fatso. You are making an *** of yourself.

My main point is that Republicans are also choosing not to negotiate and demand they get their way (by way of clean CR, I get that). They could come to the table and discuss things, but are demanding a CR. They have the option of folding and say yes to everything the Dem’s are asking for, right? There are two sides to this, and the truth is it is 60 votes for a reason.
Why would the republicans fold here? The dems basically are asking to roll back a large part of the changes implemented in the BBB.

no, I understand all that. The Democrats feel as if they have leverage over republicans . Their "demand" adds $1.5 trillion to the deficit/debt and includes provisions they know the Republicans will not accept. Yes. both sides are playing the game. but, at this point, IMO, where we have people not getting paid, no food stamps, airports starting to slow down flights, etc, breaking out one segment for funding doesn't make sense. Remember democrats talk about saving healthcare but the ACA subsidies (about $350 Billion over 10 years) is only about 20% of what's in the Democrats demand.

No on your point about negotiations. Sure republicans could negotiate. But, what's to negotiate - funding for SNAP, restoring USAID, ACA subsidies? Isn't the issue funding the government? For the first time in almost 29 years they are close to creating a budget based on regular order. That means each of the appropriations comes through the normal committee process, to the floor for votes and then we get a budget based on the normal actions of the Senate (and House) and away from these omnibus bills at the last minute.

So democrats have the upper hand right now in that republicans can't pass a CR by themselves. Is this the way of the future? Remember also, this CR was supposed to be only 7 weeks. Do we go through this again in December?

I would have expected no less from you on this issue. Thanks for your unbiased perspective.
So how can that be biased? Republicans passed the CR in the House. 52 republicans have voted "yes" in the Senate. About 44 democrats have voted "no" on passing the CR, about the same amount voted "no" on breaking out pay for the military. Now you're going to tell me that republicans should negotiate. I understand the democrat talking point. But if what you're saying is that my position is biased because of my statement above, is your's any less biased because you blame republicans?

I’m not saying they should surrender everything either. But the 60 votes is designed to force compromise. So negotiations and a middle ground is what I would like. Wouldn’t expect them to accept full roll backs of everything in a previous bill.

It’s a bad look for Democrats. The are wearing the brunt of this shutdown. I predict they fold before their constituents lose their snap benefits.

There are two sides, and it has seemed to me people who lean right are going to blame left, and vice versa.

Dems folding won’t surprise me tho. It’s what they do.

the Senate had a vote, last week I think, to fund pay for essential services, but democrats voted that down also.

there are always two sides, and both have valid points. It all comes down to what is the objective here. It's hard for me to see what the Democrats are trying to accomplish, and so far when asked they haven't been able to explain. They keep saying 24 million people will lose health insurance, but as I posted earlier, they have a $1.5 trillion proposal on the table, and the ACA subsidies are only about 20% of that amount. Plus, as I posted yesterday I believe, the subsidies make up only a small part of the ACA cost increases that are coming in 2026.

If they wanted to debate on what to do to fix the overall health care system, they would have a valid point. But that would have nothing to do with this CR. And even if there was a solution to that, nothing could move forward because the government is shut down.

Democrats had best be careful they don't overplay this hand. There are already little snippets on TV and in papers of their leaders talking about how the American people have to suffer and the use of leverage in this shutdown. You're starting to see some of the normal constituencies like the Washington post, certain normally left TV commentators, union leaders, calling on them to pass the clean CR and open the government. Employees and families, government contractors, air travelers and businesses aren't happy now and won't be any happier with continued intransigence. I don't know about you, but I see more and more pundits concentrating their questions more to democrat leaders than Republican on ending the shutdown. You can make a positive point but after a while the positive can turn to a big negative.

I hope it doesn't come to this.

On one hand I don't think that tactic should be used, I would like to see historical norms protected. However, there is no doubt in my mind Democrats would do it if they had the option. They abused all kinds of power, see Arctic Frost, when they were in office and won't hesitate to do the same when they regain power.

Democrats are losing this issue bigly so the longer it goes on the worse they look and the worst their constituents will be. They own this and everyone sees it.

I like to see Republicans finally fighting fire with fire.

Democrats' rift with unions erupts as shutdown pain worsens

The American working class has lost faith in the democratic party. Now the Teamsters are telling them to pass a clean CR that the GOP has been asking for......................

https://www.axios.com/2025/10/30/democrats-unions-labor-trump-shutdown-airlines

Democrats' already fraying alliance with organized labor is coming under new strain as a growing list of union leaders calls on the party to accept a Republican bill that would reopen the government.
Why it matters: Once it would have been virtually unthinkable for so many unions to break so decisively with their long-time Democratic compatriots in such a highly charged national fight. Not anymore.

These cultists who claim the shutdown is the result of the GOP are hilarious. Just when you thought they couldn't get any more ridiculous, they do.... lol...

And let us not forgot why the democrats are shutting down the government. They want to extend TEMPORARY covid benefits.............. They had 4 years under sleepy Joe but didn't seem care back then when republicans were passing clean resolutions to keep the government open....

First, it's only a minor part. Second, Trump effectively (and unconstitutionally) rolled back prior Congressional budget appropriations via a whole raft of spending impoundments. So spare us your caterwauling.

They're both biased. But the difference is that you seek to project the image of a guy who is in the middle of the political spectrum even while espousing the Republican party line on every issue. You could not even admit that it was a mistake for the Trump Administration to allow live munitions to be fired over Interstate 5 while it was open, which is precisely what would have happened had Governor Newsom not closed I-5..

I'm not taking the Republican position, I'm taking the position of congressional legislative process, and I am in the middle of the political spectrum. It's just right now democrats seem to have moved so far left that even what used to be a center left position now seems to be almost far right.

The Senate rules require a 60 vote count to invoke cloture. You know that! That means that Republican and democrats have to join together to pass the CR. So if nearly all republicans are voting to pass the CR and nearly all democrats are voting against it, to include a vote to fund government essential employees, then who is controlling the government shutdown? Who is controlling the process? Even the democrat base, unions, who recognise the process, are calling for democrats to end the shutdown.

Now I know you will bring up "well, the Republicans should negotiate", which by the way when you accuse me of being biased, is the democrat position. Sure republicans can negotiate, but in the case of the shutdown, they voted to keep the government open. Now, even you, who shows no biases :), have to admit that. What do you want them to negotiate, they've already passed, or voted to pass, the bill. I know you, of totally open mind, find this hard to accept, but from a process perspective, your democrats are on the wrong side of this issue.

Plus, as I'm sure your aware, they have a $1.5 trillion proposal on the table...which includes significantly more than the ACA subsidies. Should both sides have negotiated the original proposed budget? Sure they should have, just like they should have when democrats controlled the house, Senate and presidency, just like they should have when democrats passed the ACA. But for some reason, democrats and republicans in our government like to stick fingers in each others eyes rather than work together. Just look at the posts on this board. How many posters do you see that can look at issues and see the positions of each side? You, dpic, firegiver, Tboone, tigergrowls, fat piggy? All of them, you don't see both sides, only their own. Why do you and the other left leaning folks dispose Trump so much, why do those on the right only see the good? I worked the Congress for years, it was never like this. Sure each side had their positions, but in the end they worked together for the good of the American people. There were few shutdowns before 1995-1996, that's because our leaders made their points and then worked together. If Clinton and Gingrich could work together on reforms so should our current leaders. But democrats, even you have to admit, really are extremely anti trump, and simply can't work with him, but become "outraged" when he won't work with them.

In the case of the live fire exercises, which I fail to see has anything to do with a government shutdown, I said that I would not have done it. What more do you want me to say? Impeach trump? Governments due stupid things. Neither Republican nor democrats have a monopoly on dumb.

By the way, if I were Trump or Johnson, I would go on national TV and say something to the effect...the democrat shutdown is having disastrous effects on the US...pay for military civilians, ATC: air traffic delays etc you know the rest. We, (the good guys) have decided that enough is enough. The Democrats have said they want to negotiate the ACA subsidies. We will do that effective tomorrow. In return, at the hour of the meeting the Senate will conduct a vote to reopen the government. If democrats are true to their word, that vote will be positive, and the government will reopen. We will do what democrats have been demanding. The rest is up to them.
and see what happens

When the Affordable Care Act passed. behind closed doors, without one Republican vote, the average annual premiums for a family of four people was around $1,000 per year.

In a three year period, a family of four ended up having to pay annual premiums of $5,000 and an excessive amount of out-of-pocket costs before the medical insurance paid. It was a scam before it was passed.

We all know. This happened to all of us.

BREAKING: Elon Musk says Democrats shut down the government because they are TERRIFIED of losing their illegal alien voter base after President Trump cut off welfare for illegals... x.com/i/status/19843…

"The Democrat Party will lose a lot of voters."

ROGAN: And they have a difficult job if it can't be reintroduced into a new bill...

ELON: "Yes."

"The Democratic Party wants to destroy democracy by importing voters."

"The reason you have the standoff is because if the hundreds of billions of dollars to create a financial incentive...to have this giant magnet to attract illegals from every part of Earth to these states...if that is turned off, the illegals will LEAVE. Because they're no longer being paid to come to the United States and stay here."

EXACTLY.

Related on highest level. Gather the legions free men. We must defeat the communist infiltrators. Cool movie snippet.

So many still don’t get it.

The Dems intentionally left the border open, flooded the nation with tens of millions of illegals, harbor them in sanctuary cities, refuse any election security, encourage illegals to vote, and they steal elections.

We are under attack from within.

The Democrats have waged war against the American People, and imported tens of millions of illegal voters, so they can retain power.

This is why they don’t want Trump/ICE/USMIL to deport the illegals. This is why they don’t want election security/voter ID laws. This is treason on the highest level. We are already at war.

People don’t seem to understand that there is not going to be any coexistence. Either we defeat the Deep State here and now, or they will gain complete control, and humanity will be destined to a life of slavery at the hands of true evil.

Everyone needs to wake the **** up.

What most people don't understand is that you dont have to get rid of the filibuster for everything to get rid of it when it comes to funding the government.

Just like the senate removed the need for a filibuster to confirm judges and lower level appointees, the senate can simply remove the filibuster for funding bills or for CRs or for any host of line item types bills.

Reconciliation is just one example of the senate removing the filibuster to pass a certain type of bill with its own senate rules governing what it can and can't contain.

In other words, it has already been done countless times. This is not an all or nothing discussion.

Agree.

I see a lot of spineless Trump supporters saying “we can’t get rid of the filibuster because the Dems will abuse it when they are in power”.

You fools don’t get it.

We are already in all-out irregular warfare. We are already under attack. The Dems have already weaponized every lever of government and the private sector against Trump and the American People. They already brainwashed the planet, flooded the country with illegals, released a man-made biological weapon, and are trying to overthrow Trump, AGAIN!

If the Dems gain control again, it doesn’t matter how nice we were to them. They will destroy us and our way of life regardless. This is already their mission even if we don’t get rid of the filibuster.

And if Trump succeeds in his mission of deporting the tens of millions of illegals, securing elections, draining the swamp, and arresting the traitors, the Dems will never win an election again.

Many don’t seem to grasp the magnitude of the situation. This is the final battle for the Republic. If we don’t win decisively here and now during Trump’s term, it’s over.

We must completely obliterate the Deep State, deport the Dems’ illegal voters, and safeguard future elections. Once this happens, the Dems will never win again, and we can begin rebuilding this nation.

Those of you afraid of what the Dems might do… where have you been the last 10 years? They already crossed every line. They already unleashed war upon us. We either win now, or we become a one-party Left-wing state, and the nation, and therefore the world, will be lost forever.
