I understand the black shirt tradition and how it was started...but in my opinion-over time being a black shirt was about being a starter or a guy that contributed a lot to those bad mo fo defenses. There was a great deal of pride about receiving a black shirt. What is so great about wearing a black shirt when you are one of the worst defenses in the country...it is disgraceful to all those guys that came before you that made being a black shirt so special.

If your opinion is they get a black shirt for being a starter even if they are embarrassingly bad, then so be it. The black shirt defense can turn into being a participation ribbon.

In my opinion, they should be handing out pink shirts until they start to play like they deserve to be a black shirt--Banker too.

Honestly, I think it's disgraceful that you call our defensive starters disgraceful. They are doing the best they can and slowly improving. They haven't given up, folded, or caved in during games. Every single game has gone down until the very end and they have been playing their guts out. Playing large numbers of snaps without substitutes, cramping late in games, puking on the field, etc. What else can you expect from a group of guys.

I'm not pounding my chest about the D. It can be better, obviously. But acting as if the D is the worst in the country is flat out unfair. Acting as if Banker has already failed (and Eichorst/Riley by extension) is premature and to me shows a lack of critical thinking skills.
Maybe not Riley and Banker - but our secondary is beyond horrible and there is no good reason for it other than coaching - This is just not a poor grade this is a complete and utter fail - these kids would have done as well with no coach

To the OP: I really like how Banker handled this. It clearly defines the player/coaches responsibilities regarding the Blackshirt. Player's job to live up to the standard. Coaches job to make sure they are living up to the standard. That's leadership.

I'm not ready to say that just yet. It is troubling, don't get me wrong. I just don't think you see such a difference in run D without major changes. I'm willing to see if the secondary players have adjusted next year.

everyone keeps saying Riley needs to be a CEO and that CFB is big business yet when a coach completely fails everyone says "Oh well he needs more time" If in fact this was business Stewart's head would be on the chopping block right now - maybe not terminated but getting close.

They are last in the country in passing yards allowed - think of all the no talent crappy teams that are doing better than that - last - Not middle of the pack

Kansas playing in the pass happy Big12 is better

I'm not going to explain this in-depth for the fortieth time. So in easy terms... Our safeties had to hold our corners hands in coverage help under Bo. Our corners can't play the lock down because they didn't develop that skill the past few years. That's why they look like a fish out of water running down the sidelines with a reciever.

Are you really playing " They have not had time to learn it" card - There are 126 teams in the nation doing better than our secondary, many of those teams have new coaches and most have new players in their secondary. To sit here is say being last in the country is justified because Bo taught them a different system is beyond belief.

These coaches have also now had a spring and summer camp and have played 6 games how long do you anticipate it takes Stewart to adjust so we can be ranked in the top 75?

We are last in pass defense - it is not just one game or need a little time to work on technique

Playing the corner position is an art form. It takes a very special kind of athlete with really good coaching to develop and maintain that skill. You are showing your ignorance by even disputing my post.

They are 74 in pass efficiency defense, btw. Probably a better indicator of pass defense anyway. Still not great, but the inflated passing yards are a reflection of many things, including our very good run defense (also the fact that we were leading VERY late in 3 of the 4 games we lost). Food for thought...

I would say ignorance is being shown by you posting your justification for the secondary being rated dead last in the country. Many many teams and players have less experience, less talent and new coaches yet they are performing better

BTW - since I stated Kansas ( who plays against much better passing offenses) is rated above us - For their Corners they are starting a low 3 star JC player who just got on campus this year and the other is being manned by a true freshman who was a 2 star recruit as a Safety

I also like how he handled that. Now if he can figure out how to get these guys to stop the pass. I think our lack of a pass defense is more to the scheme than it is the players. He obviously sells out to stop the run first. Not working so well for us.

Our pass defense efficiency number is...
1- Michigan 85.43
74- Nebraska 130.72
127- Texas State 193.49

As you can see our number shows were closer to the top half then the bottom.

The D is in fact one of the worst in the country. Up to this point Banker has failed. Up to this point Riley has failed...he has 3 wins and 4 losses against unranked teams. Eichorst has failed up to this point, because he hired this coach at the largest revenue generating sport for the university. Maybe they turn it around, maybe the don't...their interim grade is currently a "F" for all.

Technically he is correct. The top half starts at #63. So we are closer to 63rd than 127th. I'm not sure why that is good, however.

We're gonna have to agree to disagree here. I'd give them a grade of "I" (incomplete) and I consider anything other than that at this point impatient and shortsighted. There is zero chance I can convince you of my thinking.

0/10 troll points awarded.

Also - weren't you wanting an "ignore" feature for the words "Bo" and "Pelini", just the other day? Perhaps I am mistaken?
No, I was the one who wanted it...but was told that Bo content was here to stay. So, since Bo is getting about four times the play of Riley I thought I would join the crowd and chime in with my opinions of him and why he is gone. If he could have taught any semblance of defense Bo would still be here. But this past Saturday shows he simply is deficient in this area.

Cool

You are mostly right...I am mostly just having some fun with you guys today. Although, I am not going to lie, I really do hate Riley and Banker.

Time to move on since you claim to mostly just having some fun. I don`t see it that way and frankly am tiring of the attacks on players and staff. Your choice.

It looks like D work so far. I was more responding to his history of having written their grade in stone and drawn hasty conclusions from it. He has not allowed that what we are seeing right now may not be what we will see in the future with this staff.

Yes you are so right it's coaching. This staff has not figured out a way to coach them better when for what, seven years under Bo, the defense rarely had 3 linebackers on the field at one time. Now they do. Major change, especially when one is a true freshman, one played DE last year, and the middle spot has been Bando, Webber, back to Bando. Rose-Ivey, out long term. Gifford, in and out. How many other guys have got snaps at LB????

Now the secondary. Your inability to understand how much of a transition that from Bo's system, to this system, make you unqualified to comment further. This D is out there to stop the run and FORCE the pass, and with one less secondary player than was on the field at most times under the last regime. That is going to cause problems. I've tried to tell some of you since BYU that you had better expect struggles on pass defense, because in essence, all the players are practically true freshman to this scheme. Kalu, started two games last year, WHEN Nebraska started in the dime defense (for you stat watchers, that means 6 defensive backs on the field). Rose, I'm pretty sure never stated a game before this year. The safeties, way more man coverage responsibility this year. Cockrell, mostly played nickel last year (for the stat watchers, that means he was the 5th DB on the field last year). Gerry, has had obvious growing pains this year. Chris Jones, SEVEN tackles last year. 5 on special teams, and 2 vs Fresno (for the stat watchers, that means he didn't play a lot of snaps).

IF, IF this was Banker's 7th year here, I'd be pissed as hell at the results, but we are through 6 games in year ONE! Teams are passing on us, but they are NOT running at will on us like they have from what 2011-2014??? You can win if you give up yards through the air. You can't win (hell you can't even be competitive) if the other team controls the line of scrimmage and slowly (or in the case of Wisky) jams the freaking ball down your throat.

Now the defensive line, IMO, they get have the easiest transition of the 3 defensive levels, from the prior scheme to this one. Ask Minny's OL, who expected to come in Saturday and dominate our DL because they had done it before the two prior meetings. They are not out there thinking as much, they get to cause havoc. How Collins and Valentine could be made to look so inept and incompetent last year was just unreal, but that was scheme, not them IMO.

So until you explain your defensive football expertise and can come up with a way for the coaches to speed up the learning curve without violating NCAA rules on how many hours they can spend on their sports, and can explain exactly how Banker and staff are screwing up X's and O's, stop with the easy freaking argument about where the defense ranks with the statistics. Some of us were smart enough to realize there would be unavoidable growing pains, and frankly, I'm tired of hearing the same old BS from those who were not smart enough.

No good reason other than coaching? Depth, inexperience, injuries, scheme change, and most importantly, 6 freaking games worth to work on it. The back 7 has struggled this year early, and that will happen when you are not 100% confident in what you are doing. It appeared as if the light went on with some of the players the last couple of weeks, and I expect continued improvement, but the stats will suffer all season long. Good for you, because you will still have something to ***** about.

I completely get why we should have growing pains to a certain extent - First the Lb'ers have been progressing pretty well and mind you this is group hardest hit by lack of depth and injuries - I have no issues with their play
Dline has been playing better for sure

Secondary has not played better - growing pains I am sure is a factor - I just do not see it as justification for giving up the most passing yards in the entire country - If Bankers scheme and coaching staff is going to build dominate defenses here then starting out this low is not a good sign - I could see middle of the pack and then next year it takes off - but from this bad to a championship level defense in a year or two is questionable.

I agree with much of what you posted but in my mind this is still not justification for being this bad on pass defense

You need to listen to Banker's interview today if you can't figure out the relationship of having revolving doors at linebacker and the problems with our pass D. We haven't played the same set of linebackers in any two straight games. It IS IN FACT related and I have been posting that since the second game of the season. Banker does IN FACT know defense. He may not run the style of D that some like, but he has in fact adapted and run what he has had to to deal with opposing offenses and the injuries we've had.

I agree with a lot of what you say. Where I would disagree is your thoughts on the schemes being drastically different. Defense is not as complicated as offense. That is generally why the defense is ahead of the offense early in the season...plus the players before the season raved about the defense because it was simplified. For a secondary it really comes down to playing man coverage or zone coverage. You are either on your guy or you are in an area.

I don't think you see a lot of completely blown coverages, it is more guys not quite in good enough position to make the play, right? Now zone coverage that can happen. There has to be really good communication on defense-when you are releasing a player to a different zone so you can go pick up another guy that entered your zone. Also, if you don't get enough pressure on the QB, they will can pick the defense a part...I think that is a key for the defense moving forward.

With respect to man coverage it seems like the corners are following their guy and they are not aware of what the QB is doing. If you watch the Alabama's of the world or Muschamp defense's (maybe not at Auburn this year), the corners--after a few steps a lot of times the corners have their eyes on the quarterback and are still running with the receivers. That helps them make plays on the ball and what DB coaches talk about when the refer to proper eye control or eye discipline.

This is one defiant advantage we have playing more power run based offenses. And you saw it against Minnesota. Our linebackers will be attacking the runner instead of dropping back into coverage. I'm expecting to see better coverage from our corners this week.
