The rise is best illustrated in State's deal with Tulane. When the original contract was signed on July 10, 1998, it was actually typewritten. And in the buyout clause, it said Tulane would have to pay $75,000 to get out of the deal. An letter of addendum added to the contract file on July 31, 2009, outlined a 2016 game - and increased the buyout from $75,000 to $350,000.
It's all designed to ensure that what happened to State in 2008 doesn't happen again. Prior to that season, Central Michigan backed out of a handshake deal to play State in a two-for-one, leaving the school in a tough spot to fill games.
