Slow sluggish start for Avery. Kinda like they ain't seen a football in two weeks.
Avery - 6
Madison - 0
End of 1st

I’m not being mean here so please understand the sincerity of this question. How is Madison this bad each year? No offense to Avery because I know they’re good, but was hoping Madison had fielded a good team

I was wondering the same thing. Madison brought a decent crowd with them tonight. Maybe (hopefully) this new coach will turn things around. If Madison would have played any other team from the conference it would've gotten ugly sooner then it did. Avery definitely needed this game to get Cooper's "pause bug" worked out. But you would have to think that year after year eventually just out of pure luck they would put together a competitive season every now and then.

It’s a big county and Asheville should expand to this bedroom community. The men’s basketball team was competitive with less talent than most teams. I think that’s due to their coach who is demanding maybe not like we’ve seen in years, but it would seem they’re due a competitive team. Hoilman is a player and I look for Avery to contend in the league

Troy is talented I would be lying if I said that I hated that he had a falling out with the mountaineers. But we've had Hoilman's leave Avery county bound for Mitchell county. I just wish he would have had the opportunity to play a full season of his senior year.

His dad was a good lineman on a great Mitchell team that lost the coin flip to go to playoffs back in the day

Madison has never been good, at almost any time in their history. In 48 seasons, Madison has had exactly 1 winning season; 2012. And they went 13-2 and went to the western final. By that math, they are due another good team sometime around 2051.

Its culture. Teams like that will likely never be good, because they have lost for so long, they just accept that they will be bad again the next year. During the 2011-2013 seasons, it truly looked like Madison's new coach would flip that script. They went 5-7 in 11, and were better than their record, 2012 the stars aligned and they beat almost everyone (including Shelby), and 2013 they went 6-6, again really better than their record indicated. Then the coach got bit by the Madison bug, and got caught doing some things that are frowned upon in modern society. So, madison is back to the basement...

Places like Madison can build winners with the right coach and culture. There can't be much of a difference in the kids in Yancy County vs the kids in Madison.

Places like South Davidson I don't ever see it changing.

Madison could be decent. They have size, and talent every year, but they dont seem to weight train properly, and any skill talent migrates to North Buncombe or Mountain Heritage...

Heritage wasn’t much better than Madison when Joey went there. He turned that around. Granted heritage would be more competitive year in and out, but they were in the basement when he got there. They weren’t traditionally a football school they were a basketball school.

One of the difficult things is finding a Joey to come to a place like Madison and turn it around. When jobs like that open up, the applicant pool isn't very strong if I had to guess. Sounds like they had a decent guy and things went south with him.

Some places just can't get it right. In situations like this I think it just comes down to the community and the programs that feed the high school.

Madison
South Davidson
North Moore
Chatham Central
Bertie
Cherryville

Just to name a few.
I saw where Bessemer City dressed "15" players Friday night and lost by 3 TD's to Highland Tech (I don't think HT had ever beat BC). BC has been pretty good over the last 5-6 years. Don't know what's going on over there.

Bertie has had good football teams in the past and played close to .500 football over the last decade, dont think they belong anywhere near that list.

I was just trying to think of some others and for some reason they came to mind. I remember them being pretty bad at 1 time.

I don't really know about Bessemer City, but their numbers are real low. They probably had 5 or 6 players on the sidelines in jerseys (not dressed out). I thought if you have any COVID issues you have to shut everything down (like North Gaston had to do).

I’m at the beach on vacation and watching the NCAA’s wrestling on TV.Gable Steveson is a man. HWT shouldn’t move like he does.
He’s ridiculously talented. The only 2 matches he ever lost were both by one point to former national champ Anthony Casser who was good enough to slow the matches down. Casser wouldn’t be able to handle him now.
