Looks like Madison opted out of the 2A West playoffs, which gives Newton-Conover the 32-seed. Newton-Conover will travel to Reidsville in the first round.

Why would any team or coach decide to opt out of a playoff game? I may understand Madison as what they have been through from the hurricane, but really disappointed in Newton-Conover, staff, and admin for allowing this to happen. I don't understand the rational at all

Cost of travel on the school, buses diesel, feeding pre game meal, and they know they are in for a whipping…..bottom line is to many teams make the playoffs….if they cut the amount of teams down that got in this would not be a problem….but then the state would lose money so not happening

All of those are excuses. NC can afford all of those things so that is BS. I agree with the amount of teams making the playoffs, but still you owe it to the seniors, fans, community, and future to at least play. No matter the outcome, play for the integrity of the game. Reidsville wont beat you no worse than playing a Maiden or Bunker Hill, plus they will call off the dogs after the 2nd qrt....Go play...you owe that much to the kids.

Yes nc can afford it but the school is responsible for paying not the state….maybe the seniors on this team voted to not play? Idk and Reidsville doesn’t always call the dogs off and sometimes there back up pups are still better than your starters

NC as in Newton-Conover but if NC wants to include all of these teams maybe they should pay. Still, they should have played and shame on the N-C coaching staff for bailing out on their kids, parents, fans and community. If I were a parent of a future Red Devil, I'm looking other places. No excuses.

I agree with you, unless the kids themselves voted not to play. If not, the game should be played.

Madison fired the head coach the week of the flood. Apparently, not a lot of players came back afterward. Probably better to move on to basketball season. And the stellar, "newspaper of record" for WNC has no info on any of it.

Madison didn’t beat anyone remotely good. Their two wins were against the weakest two WNC teams. They had no chance against Reidsville and it probably was a safety issue.

Reidsville has played Madison in the last 2 playoff years in football...first round.....2022 Reidsville 76 Madison Co. 14.....2023 Reidsville 58 Madison Co. 0.................With all the upheaval going on in that part of the state....I certainly can't blame them for not making the long trek just to get kicked in the head.........................................this past March Madison also played Reidsville in the first round of basketball playoffs and got destroyed 92-19.........

I'm not sure about that. Somebody better informed than us can weigh in. But I thought that out of the gate money was taking the travel expense. As well as a stipend for pregame meal. And then what was left over after that and the officials, was split in a certain way I'm not sure of the percentages between the two teams and the state.

The percentage of gate in playoff games largely goes to the state….not sure on exact percentile breakdown

The payment system to teams for playoff games is described in NCHSAA handbook. I will give link late unless someone wants a victory over a Reidsville Ram and and links it first. Anyway hit me with your best shot.

Depending on the distance, it would depend on if you get mileage reimbursement. Traveling team gets meal for reimbursement ($270). Every round the NCHSAA takes a little more of the money (1st and 2nd round are the same) and the rest of the gate is then split between the two teams. Home team gets to keep all concession money.

Championship games are also a little different.

FYI - It's on page 89.

I can't blame Madison at all for this, they've had so many heartbreaks this year from the storm to their internal situation.. no need to drive all that way to Reidsville to get nuked all over the field by them. They went out the best way possible for that program to go with that upset win in that thriller vs Owen, no need to ruin that and the momentum for the program that comes with it with that playoff game. They can now focus on hiring the right HC and start to rebuild it brick by brick.

NC though that move is just not excusable at all. Granted they aren't what they were in my day, but they are a respectable program and they shouldn't do that. The kids are being cheated by not consulting with them and it's just an awful look.
