Mallard Creek & East Forsyth easily 1 & 2 in the State 4AA, definitely some separation for 3 on down

Both teams have nearly all of their starters returning. These 2 teams are on a different level than the rest of the State when it comes to the Offensive Line. They were easily the best two teams in 4AA last year, in which Mallard came from behind to beat East Forsyth in OT.

I wouldn't presume to speak for the Mallard Creek coaches ( though I think I know the answer). As a fan I can tell you that there are 5 teams on the MC schedule that would concern me more than EF.

Butler- 1 and 1a with Mallard Creek for the best defense in the state and Hales has his QB returning. They typically average 45 a game and win tittles or get to regional finals with that scenario

Dillon, Byrnes and Southpointe- All traditionally better than EF . Dillon hasn't lost in 37 games and we play there on opening night. Very tough.

Vance- Best or 2nd best QB in the state. Caught a glimpse of them at Powerade 7 on 7. Most athletic and large team in the tourney and they play MC with a chip on their shoulder.

Then EF..

I have a lot of respect for what Willert has done there and if you want to tell me they are top 5 in the state I probably buy that but you guys get just unbelievably giddy about the game last year. Great game, very good squad but defensively EF was terrible and they lose their two best LB's and tacklers and I believe 2 of the front 4. Please don't tell me about the JV. EF isn't and never has been a re-load team.

If you want to lump them in with Butler- Page- in that list behind MC I'm OK but there certainly isn't a gap of any size.

You guys keep wanting to put EF on this level with MC and its just silly. MC is 21-2 in the past 5 years in the playoffs. They have won 15 straight. There is nothing in the recent history of the EF program that would indicate that they will be anywhere near the level they were last year.

Butler is I think tied if not ahead of East Forsyth this year. Watch out the Bulldogs will be very good again in 2016.
Mallard Creek is #1 though and as of the pre-season it isn't close, although that is subject to change come week 1.

When they met MC they lied and told MC the game didn't start until the 4 Qtr and MC started to play and won. Player was off-sides blah blah blah! Worst Pass interference call in the history of football blah blah blah! MC has the worst fans in the history of football making fun of crying kids blah blah blah. 600 Yards of offense against -2.5 yards of offense! 13 of the last 16 titles in 4aa go to 3 Meck county schools. Zero to Forsyth county.
24 Western Regional final appearances since 2000 for Meck county. 1 for Forsyth county.

Thanx blue but we def have some athletes but we jus have to put it together. We always have the problem of playing up and playing down to our opponent, it showed after we lost the OT to s-burg and played greenwood. Discipline and consistency has to b the key for us this yr

If you think that everyone is just gonna agree that after making there first regional final in 24 years and losing that they are suddenly on the same level with Mallard Creek or way ahead of Butler your nuts. I can tell you that Hough actually beat MC in overtime @ The Creek. If they played East Forsyth playoff schedule, they would have made it to the Western Region finals. Throw Catholic's name in the hat and we would've had one heck of a mini-tourney. Maybe include Rose and Dudley, too, who both impressed me as well. All of these teams seemed to be on about the same level to me, and all were deserving of their very high (and similar) rankings.

However, anyone seeing EF as being easily better than any of the other teams listed needs to lay off the hard stuff and join us here in the real world. Better yet...get out of Forsyth Co and schedule some of these power teams from surrounding areas...and find out for sure where you stand.

You're right, the numbers are off slightly...13 returning starters and 25 returning lettermen for Catholic...but oline and dline both return pretty much intact from last season.

For Butler, 15 returning starters and 32 returning lettermen (the C.O. doesn't account for one missing starter we're getting back from an off-the-field issue).

FYI (since you're a guy who keeps up with the sport pretty closely)...the new experimental playoff guidelines posted on nchsaa.org for 2016-2017 do NOT mention subdividing in any way. I've been trying to find out from someone with inside info what this means, but haven't had any luck so far. However, what's been posted so far is pretty black-and-white...NO subdividing for football this year.

Read under Classifications. It clearly says that Football is divided into 1A, 1AA, 2A, 2AA, 3A, 3AA, 4A, & 4AA.

It does say that, but that line carries over from last year's rules. Read the new sections specifically written for this year, though (4.1.17 Playoff Berths / Qualifications and 4.1.18 Seeding). Not only is there NO mention of subdividing in any way and no procedures included to implement it, there's also no mathematical way that the new procedures can even work if you subdivide. You can't take a 64 team classification, subdivide it big and small and then divide it into fourths and end up with 16 team groups. The math just simply does not add up. Additionally, the NCHSAA has had a different presentation to the officials in which they say that East #1 will play Mideast #16 and so forth on down the line. If you subdivide, you can't get 16 seeds, period. It's not mathematically possible.

My guess is that the NCHSAA will rewrite the football specific parts of the seeding section to include procedures for subdividing (thus ending up with 8 team groups), but it's now 3 weeks until football season starts, so it would be nice if they got on with it. What they've posted so far does not include procedures for subdividing and the math doesn't work when you do make an attempt to include subdividing.

Actually, in re-reading the seeding section, scratch the 16 team groups thing. That was in the presentation given to the officials, but it's not hard written into the new seeding procedures, so I can see that not applying for football (although that exception is not explicitly written at this time).

Instead, just note that subdividing is not mentioned in any way...

4.1.18 Seeding:

(a) Once the (64) qualifying teams are determined, they will be divided into four (4) groups, (i.e. East, Mideast, Midwest, West) based upon the longitude of each school.

(b) Seed all first place, regular season conference champions by 22-game winning percentage (10-game, football; All games, Tennis, Wrestling & Lacrosse) followed by;

(c) Conference tournament champions by 22-game winning percentage (10-game, football; All games, Tennis, Wrestling & Lacrosse), followed by;

(d) All other qualifying teams by 22-game winning percentage (10-game, football; All games, Tennis, Wrestling & Lacrosse)

(1) All ties for seeding in (a), (b) or (c) will be broken by:

(i) All Head-to-Head Competition
Note: The non-conference game(s) that are dropped for seeding purposes may still be
used in breaking a tie.
Note: All teams involved in the tie must have played each other.

(ii) 24-game record (11-game, Football; All games, Tennis, Wrestling and Lacrosse)

(iii) MaxPreps Ranking (last available ranking at the time of the seeding)

(iv) Draw

UPDATE: Chris Hughes attended a recent NCHSAA football coaches rules meeting where it was clarified that there WILL still be subdividing, so the new handbook confusion appears to be a result of something just being really, really poorly written.

The 64 teams will be subdivided big and small (32 teams in each division) based on ADM. The 32 team divisions will then be divided into (4) 8 team "groups" based on longitude. After sorting and seeding each "group", East #1 will play Mideast #8 on so on. West #1 will play Midwest #8 and so on.

If some NCHSAA member is reading this, then I volunteer to help you re-write that section of the rules in a way that makes sense and works in the real world.
