I don't understand the measles "outbreak". South Carolina requires 2 MMR shots after children reach 1 year old. If the vaccine is effective those who receive it cannot become infected. So can this really turn into a big thing?

In the upstate, especially, vaccination rates are pretty low. So it can spread amongst that population. Additional considerations:
  • As with all things, the vaccine is not 100% effective so some small number of vaccinated people will still get sick (like 3% or something)
  • There are people out there who aren't otherwise idiots but have auto-immune issues that prevent them from receiving the vaccine. They're at the mercy of the people who can get vaccinated but chose not to.

The rate was over 95% for decades until the past few years when vaccine hesitancy rose (more) to prominence. This is why it was declared "eliminated"
Those rates are generally based on kindergarteners. Not really population based but, fair enough.

I don’t think it’s ever been anywhere near 95% of the entire population. That’s a segment of the population and one where vaccination rates are amongst the highest of any.

However, once again, vaccine derived immunity wanes, tho live vaccine wane less.

I would gamble that part of what we’re seeing is the disease-derived immunity waning over time. Meaning, my parents had disease-derived immunity, I do not. Guaranteed I need a booster.

So as vaccine hesitancy is driving down coverage rates, waning vaccine-derived immunity AND disease-derived is also waning.

The anti-vax crowd has to be one of the most reckless, ignorant, and dangerous group in America, because they directly affect our children.

And now the head of that crowd is our Secretary of Health.

Just truly reprehensible, and as the father to a baby who isn't old enough to get the measles vaccine yet, and lives in SC, I've been livid about this for months
Who is the anti vax crowd? I understand that you despise RFK Jr but he and the CDC support the requirement for children to get the MMR vaccine. South Carolina requires the MMR vaccine for children over 1 yr old. I don't know what it takes to get an exemption in South Carolina but I assume the 92% who do get the vaccine are protected. That said I read that a vaccinated teacher got measles so the vaccine obviously isn't 100% effective.

I read last year that there was a measles outbreak in a migrant shelter in Illinois. Most of the cases were Venezuelans and a few were from Peru. I also read about an outbreak in Texas last year that was focused on the Mennonite community (not illegal immigration).

I've read that there are pockets where the vaccination rate is low but I'm trying to understand how that happens when the law requires vaccination. Are the kids home schooled? Are groups of people receiving exemption and if so on what basis?

They all hear the talking points and then walk around repeating them to each other and nodding vigorously.
It's wild - their pathologically lying president says 20 million came in during Biden's term and every single one of them repeat it like it's a fact, when the number is closer to 4 million. But they've spread that number amongst themselves so many times they have no idea they're lying(or don't care because it sounds good) and when combined with their decison to do their own research and/or think for themselves, it's easy to understand how they're so easily misled.

The biggest thing is the state hands out "religious exemptions" for the vaccine like candy. I don't want to give any more information because I don't want to make it any easier for people to get one, as:
  • The whole premise is absurd. If your religion doesn't want you to get a vaccine then you shouldn't go to public school
  • Very few religions are even opposed to vaccines

I haven't heard any recommendations about needing a booster.
Because it isnt recommended. But waning immunity, specific to MMR, is well known. It lasts a long time, decades almost certainly, but it isn’t unlimited. It’s been well over 30 years since mine. I would not gamble that I have sufficient immunity.

If measles rates do continue to climb they will recommend it.

Again tho there is a little bit of theory here bc titer testing is not routine. TBH that would be one of the best things we could do for society is truly find out who has relative immunity and who doesn’t.

Newsflash: you aren't the only person here
If you’re scared of measles then stay inside your house. You don’t make the rules. You don’t get to make medical decisions for others because you let your tv scare you into a state of hysteria

What you’re advocating for is tyranny. You don’t want to play that game.

Absolutely. At a local school there are many students whose parents attend Newspring and claim a Religious exemption. All a parent has to do is sign a paper, there is no proof or documents required.

I have a better idea. Why don't we say that people with anti-social behaviors need to home school their kids and stay out of public schools. Furthermore, we can allow people to sue them if they get someone else's kids sick. Your freedom to swing your first ends at my nose, etc etc.

Just facts.

Another 88 people were stricken by measles in the Spartanburg area, pushing South Carolina’s outbreak to 646 and fueling what is already the largest cluster of infections in the country right now, the S.C. Department of Public Health reported Jan. 20.

There are another 538 unvaccinated or unprotected people in quarantine and 33 in isolation. The latest of those quarantines will last until Feb. 23, public health said. That now includes more than 80 students at Clemson University, where there has been a confirmed case, and Anderson University, the agency said.

Of the 588 outbreak cases with a known vaccination status, 563 were unvaccinated, public health said.

Of the new cases, all but 12 were in children, Post and Courier analysis of public health data showed. So far in the outbreak, at least 574 children have been sickened, including 155 under the age of 5, when children are at greater risk of serious infections like pneumonia or a swelling of the brain known as encephalitis.

Thanks for the facts! I'm happy to add color:

This is BULL SH IT and completely preventable and all of us South Carolinians should be livid, and those that are anti-vax should know better

The average measles vaccination rate for Latin American countries and the Caribbean is 86% with many in the high 90s, so not the gotcha you think it is.

I mean we can complain about them being here but also complain about them showing up at the clinics to get their shots on our dollar.

Wonder if we are vaccinating all those illegals, we are putting in private detention centers. The ones funded by tax dollars. If we are housing and feeding them might as well vax them.

Just pointing out the false belief that Latin American immigrants aren't vaccinated, when all countries have vaccination programs and many of them have higher vaccination rates than we do. I don't have a problem with vaccinating them but most won't need to be. ;-)

In other words, it's a conspiracy theory that the reason our native vaccination rates have fallen is because of the immigrants that came across the border. I'm sure there are some that aren't but it's far from the majority of them .

The herd is the general public and if public health is less important to you than owning the libs, it's not outrageous to say you should be considerate enough to isolate from good citizens who do care.

This is the largest cluster of outbreaks in the COUNTRY. I know we went back and forth on this yesterday, but come on man- this is bad.

With 588 cases from 563 individuals unvaccinated, that puts the rate of unvaxxed individuals accounting for 96% of the outbreak.

This is a direct result of families choosing not to vaccinate their children with a vaccine that eliminated the virus more than a decade ago, and is only popping up because of anti-vaxx rhetoric. And yes, there were Measles parties before there was a vaccine. Yes it's not always deadly. I know these things.

But why would you so willingly put the babies in our state at such risk for nothing other than misplaced anger?

Us South Carolinians should be ashamed.

I'm not going to do your research for you. It was eliminated but not "cured."

If you're "so mad" and think people were "scared of their own shadows" because of covid so you rationalize a virus popping up again that puts our most vulnerable at risk without actually reading into how and why vaccines work, there is no help for you.

Don't have opinions on things you know nothing about, just because you have unrelated anecdotal experiences that literally the entire world went through.

What do I not understand? It was eliminated from this area. Then the virus was reintroduced, most likely from an immigrant, no hate just a fact. And now the herd immunity is compromised. If doctors and politicians hadn’t lied to us for several years about Covid more people would not be questioning vaccines. They created this problem and it will take time to put things back together. I will not demonize anyone for having doubts. For some reason blacks get a free pass because of some experiment that happened before they were born. Myself and my children have the MMR so we aren’t spreading anything. You could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Who knows when the reaper will come calling. Wear a seatbelt.

Nope, you just showed your cards. Covid anti-vaxxers were 99.9% maga which proves it was always political because y'all were pissed that Trump lost and wanted Biden to fail - it was clear as day. So unless all maga are smarter than the rest of us, it's hard to believe that those immediate measures were that big of a deal. Wearing a mask indoors in public spaces was easy, not breathing a strangers breath was easy and a tiny prick is easier still. Couldn't have been about safety because it was FDA approved, hence why the rest of us weren't concerned. Strange how it split perfectly along party lines, which is a bizarre way to make health decisions.

Trump invented the jab and is proud of it, he is an idiot. The lockdowns were bs. The mask didn’t work. They kept kids out of schools for years and it is having lasting repercussions. Inflation, the debt, the problems go on and on. Elderly and people with diabetes needed to be careful everyone else should have been free to deal with the virus. If you can’t wrap your head around that then you are retarded.

It was a novel, meaning NEW virus that we had never seen before so we had to lean on knowledge gained in past viral epidemics at first until we had time to learn more about how to approach it. Unfortunately, the decisons weren't perfect, but only in hindsight. They were just trying to save lives, not tread on you.

If Trump is proud of nothing else, he should be damn proud of Operation Warp Speed, which many consider his greatest accomplishment, but he's not even allowed to brag about it because he'll get killed by maga LOL. It's nucking futs

3 out of 2,242 cases. There could be other factors at play for those 3. You’re telling me that “anti-vaxxers” are to blame for .1% fatality rate?
Maybe here's some perspective, maybe not. This could differ in SC, but it's just a general reference: let's say a small school district serves a K-12 student population somewhere around the number of cases you quoted. If 3 kids within a small school district all died in a short timeframe, it would be a HUGE deal, no? Or, for example, in the Upstate if there are 2242 babies under the age of 1...and 3 of them die from the same cause that was otherwise preventable, but their well-being was instead risked because of others beliefs?

Do you think you're the only one who went through 2020? Do you think you're the only one who has struggled with the Government lying to them? Do you think you're the only one who is frustrated with the response to Covid, and how traumatizing it was on children, marriages, and family?

Don't (quite literally) throw the baby out with the bath water. That was a novel virus, this is one that has been around for centuries and we found an effective preventative for it. It's not the same, and clearly you have been effected by public health and have thought alot about it. So have some critical thinking.

I have sympathy for anti-vax people because of covid, but I don't rationalize nor agree with other vax hesitance for it. This is not on Immigrants, which is where the outbreak started but its not how it spread. And had it not been immigrants, it would've been your American born neighbor a week later, as Spartanburg has some of the largest vaccine hesitant populations in the nation.

Think critically and logically, not emotionally. You're making excuses for those who are putting our most vulnerable at risk.

It was immediately clear where the high risk population was. Within weeks. Who politicized the virus? The teachers unions for one. Again very early it was known that children were getting mildly sick. Natural immunity is a known. We have seen coronavirus’s before. Fauci was hiding information about the gain of function research. Not immediately clear and I know of two people in their 40s who died from it and since it wasn't harmful, there really was no excuse to not get it.

I can't take you seriously at all if you bleat about Fauci lol, that's your politics talking again. And whether he did or didn't fund GOF research, that had no impact on how we should have addressed it, which was terrible, hence why we had much worse outcomes than all other first world countries.

Saying Democrats wanted it to affect elections is absolutely maga talking because it's a lie. Why force people to stand in long lines with hundreds of other people when it could kill those who were vulnerable. But just to be clear, democrats won because of how poorly he mis-managed it,not because of mail-in voting.

Covid is a straw man. It might be WHY a large portion of people became anti-vax but doesn't excuse their sh i tty rationale to be so. That was a novel virus, not one that had been proven to be prevented by vaccines that have decades of studies, research, and proof that they are safe and effective.

I have sympathy, but won't argue for them, nor is it an excuse. Especially when it puts my baby at major risk- which I AM emotional about, and should be.

Ok, I completely disagree that it was his fault and we know the real reason maga flipped on him is because he disagreed with Trump and said hydroxywhatthefvck didn't work and could barely control his laughter when Dr Trump was making a fool out of himself at the podium. You seem to be a little obsessed with maga. I hope Rand gets him back before the senate so that he can answer some questions.
