I don't understand the measles "outbreak". South Carolina requires 2 MMR shots after children reach 1 year old. If the vaccine is effective those who receive it cannot become infected. So can this really turn into a big thing?
In the upstate, especially, vaccination rates are pretty low. So it can spread amongst that population. Additional considerations:
- As with all things, the vaccine is not 100% effective so some small number of vaccinated people will still get sick (like 3% or something)
- There are people out there who aren't otherwise idiots but have auto-immune issues that prevent them from receiving the vaccine. They're at the mercy of the people who can get vaccinated but chose not to.
