I do agree there is a time and place for signing a 3* and developing him. But generally speaking, I'd rather let someone else (G5) develop him and sign him out of the portal as a JR. It has to be a mix of both. But as much as I'm happy about the flips we got today, I do think signing 27 3* players is too many.
I guess it depends on how many legitimate prospects you think you can get from the portal and whether your more likely to find someone evaluated incorrectly coming out of high school rather than the portal.
I can see the logic of, "we have lots of roster spots and lots of 3*s across the country turn into great players, we're basically getting a lot of cheap lottery tickets, some of them will turn out to be good, and we'll have a better chance of keeping them than winning a bidding war with them coming out of a G5 school". I can also see the argument that players coming from G5 schools that show out we're going to be outbid on, and if they haven't shown out in G5 they're less likely to surprise to the upside than high school recruits. You buy your 3* lottery tickets, hope they turn into good players and good depth, and then you back fill with big time recruits leaving blue bloods and the occasional G5 player, and focus your money on keeping the (hopefully) several surprise studs you picked up.
But we obviously need a lot of help this year, so if Lebby doesn't get enough good portal players to at least get us to 6-6 next year, all these lottery tickets are likely to head elsewhere when we change coaches anyway.
