somewhere between completely ignoring 3* HS players and mass signing 27 of them is probably the right answer. I know we're not paying much if anything for them, but for about half of those that money, and roster spot, could be put to better use in the portal.
Could it ? Maybe we could sign a back up DL from Purdue. Or an OL from the Sunbelt. We will see how it turns out. Hopefully better than the last 2 portal hauls. The anticipated target is about 20 from the portal.

I think we need to sign at least that many. And no more of the bullsh*t we had last year with bringing in every failed Sunbelt OL we could find to process out a few weeks later. We need 20 players who can contribute.

On paper it’s going to end up being comparable to our historical average after a very slow start to it. Womack single handedly made our class ranking go up quite a bit.

Thing to remember with so many takes is that roster sizes are now 105 scholarship players. So when you add portal additions this class may easily end up having 50+ guys in it.

I do agree there is a time and place for signing a 3* and developing him. But generally speaking, I'd rather let someone else (G5) develop him and sign him out of the portal as a JR. It has to be a mix of both. But as much as I'm happy about the flips we got today, I do think signing 27 3* players is too many.
I guess it depends on how many legitimate prospects you think you can get from the portal and whether your more likely to find someone evaluated incorrectly coming out of high school rather than the portal.

I can see the logic of, "we have lots of roster spots and lots of 3*s across the country turn into great players, we're basically getting a lot of cheap lottery tickets, some of them will turn out to be good, and we'll have a better chance of keeping them than winning a bidding war with them coming out of a G5 school". I can also see the argument that players coming from G5 schools that show out we're going to be outbid on, and if they haven't shown out in G5 they're less likely to surprise to the upside than high school recruits. You buy your 3* lottery tickets, hope they turn into good players and good depth, and then you back fill with big time recruits leaving blue bloods and the occasional G5 player, and focus your money on keeping the (hopefully) several surprise studs you picked up.

But we obviously need a lot of help this year, so if Lebby doesn't get enough good portal players to at least get us to 6-6 next year, all these lottery tickets are likely to head elsewhere when we change coaches anyway.

Exactly. Rosters are bigger. Plus we will be losing a lot of players. Lebby doesn't mind suggesting the non contributors move on. So bring a lot in, weed a lot out. Players that are SEC contributors are gonna cost a lot and get snagged quickly. Hopefully with all the coaching changes we can grab a few. Even some of them will be a roll of the dice

Getting Womack was freaking HUGE. this is the kind of recruit who can help you attract other good recruits. Kamario Taylor doing good work for us too.
