MHSAA Question

Should teams like Piney Woods and St. Stanislau (sp?) be forced to play in 6A since they can accept kids from anywhere?

Here is my thinking: What is to keep a person from opening a school, say MS Boys School of Holiness, founded by a Cecil Newton type. Then they cherry pick the state for all the top talent and only field a football, basketball (guys), and baseball team. This will keep enrollment around 125 or so and allow them to compete in 1A. They could completly dominate and win untold state titles. Additionally, they could have the same guys playing in 7 on 7 teams and AAU teams. Everyone on all the Dandy Dozen/Ten Most Wanted Lists could come from one school. 1A schools could do nothing due to MHSAA going by enrollment and not worrying about schools being bound by geographical boundaries.

Some of this is already coming up in MAIS due to schools like JA and others accepting some students who just happen to excell in athletics.

Thoughts?

By enrollment standards, Stanislaus is a 2A school and Piney Woods is one of the smallest schools in the state. Because of their situations, they have to double their enrollment in order to be classified.

Ahh, did not know that. Still not sure if that makes it fair or not, but atleast a corrective measure is in place. Good to know.

A look at the MHSAA classifications for 2011-2013 shows Tupelo Christian with an enrollment of 107 and UCS with an enrollment of 91. You're telling us they really only have half that many? And that's definitely not the actual enrollment that they then apply the 2:1 multiplyer to, because if it was they'd both be 2A instead of 1A.

I thought you were talking about all private schools, not just St. Stansilaus. It makes perfect sense that they should have to double their enrollment,

Stanislaus, for example, may only enroll enough students to be a 2A school, say around 300. However, for classification, the number of students is doubled and that is what they are classified with. In this example, that would be 600. TC and UCS are not all boys or all girls. </p>

gets accused of recruiting private school QB's all the time- maybe rightfully so. And then Sumrall gets accused of recruiting in baseball, so it can go both ways, and we've all heard of accusations that South Panola and Olive Branch recruiting football players.

I just don't know that it's that big of an issue. I just think that most parents and their kids would rather stay at their local school and play, and just don't want to fool with moving and whatever benefits that they get aren't worth their time and effort either. I could see recruiting being an issue somewhere like Texas, though.
