We wouldn't have beaten Auburn no matter what the defense did. We don't have the horses. It's really that simple. Was I totally pleased with the coaching? Absolutely not. Did it cost us the game? Again, absolutely not. If you'll leave make believe land for a minute and look at things logically you'll notice that Crooms left us with very little to no talent at most positions on the field. The fact that we held a second quarter lead on them is pretty amazing. We are going to get hammered this year badly due to a combination of lack of talent and a horrible schedule. If we don't win Saturday, and we probably won't, we won't win another game for at least another month. We won't beat LSU, GT, or Houston, and coaching won't have a thing to do with it.
Mullen doesn't have a magic wand to wave over the team, and neither does any other coach. Urban Meyer said it best when he said Mullen would need talent to win. It's almost stupid to say that but it is true. Until we get talent in here and that talent gains experience we are going to lose. Hiring an unqualified coach and then allowing him to hang around for 5 seasons while doing very little quality recruiting is going to have a bad short term effect on our program. Thankfully I believe we made a good hire in Mullen and given time he will win. Thinking we are going to beat anyone decent this year, much less in the first half of the season, is just delusional. Auburn, though down, has way more talent than us. So does GT, LSU, Houston, Bama, Ole Miss, and of course Florida. If someone made me guess I'd guess that we might win one out of the Vandy, UK, and Arkansas games, but I wouldn't bet on Arkansas. Folks, we are staring a 3 win season right in the face. Put down the juice, gain a grip on reality, and watch Mullen build up our program. We might be in worse shape than we were 5 years ago. It's at least arguable.
