Miami is currently a better program. Their expectations are higher than ours.

Miamis back up broke his arm. They are playing the #3 who hasn’t taken a snap all season. I also don’t expect Monangai to play if he declares for the draft.
So their third string qb vs our third string (level) qb
Sounds like a game nobody is going to attend

Based on how we ended the season, we should feel blessed to be in a Bowl Game. Both sides will have people not play for various reasons. Miami's name still gets good recognition, so a RU win will carry some weight. I believe that Kyle will play and create headaches for Miami. If not, it's a chance for Sam Brown to show last year was not a fluke. Since Miamai is relegated to playing a 3rd string QB who hasn't played this year, our defense should have a good day. With almost 4 weeks to heal up and get prepared, we should expect RU to be competitive.
And as Greg said the extra practice days are a big plus heading into the Spring. Hopefully game day temp is in the 45-50 degree range with clear skies. I am looking forward to the game.

Only problem is that 3rd string Miami QB will have almost 4 weeks to practice and get ready for the game. I'm sure he won't look like a novice out there. By the same token, Gavin will also have time to prepare for the game. Maybe that will help him deliver a respectable performance in the game. One can hope.

Also, hopefully, Mario makes some boneheaded decisions during the game which work to our benefit.

We were one win away from playing Auburn on Dec 30th at 1 PM on ABC (sandwiched between the Peach Bowl and the Orange Bowl)? If that's true, this is an incredible missed opportunity.

Glad to see if the match up would be against an old Big East member, Miami is the one instead of the school who owes the City or the french whores.

The U won't be easy to beat, RU has to have an offense or the D won't last

Emory Williams probably will be the U's QB

Seems to be an angry, snarky mob of da U fans on X (Twitter):

All 5 of them that may think about traveling to the game. They couldn’t fill the Orange Bowl for most games not FSU when I was in grad school there when they were living in the top 10. Pathetic fan base. I expect Rutgers to have a decent “home” field advantage.

It was more about not being able to overcome the injuries piling up on the defensive end than it was these things.

It’s disappointing - but shouldn’t create a negative outlook towards the future. As long as we bring in a proven plan B at QB to compete with Gavin, everyone should be excited about the prospects for next season. Level set expectations, of course. We’re not likely going to shell out money for a stud. Because we’re not point blank kicking Gavin to the curb. So instead, we must add a power conference veteran back up who performed servicably in relief throughout his career (but not well enough to win a starting role elsewhere). The narrative to a transfer is simple - we believe in Gavin and see his potential. We’re hopeful he improves. But we’re not going to stick with a guy who can’t complete over 50% of his passes or be trusted with read options. There’s a big opportunity for a grad transfer to possibly beat him out.

What a total ******* you are. I l know you enjoy the attacks but anyone who lives life like you is someone no one likes to be around. Sad. Get well
So… I make fun of the bowl game, as part of a many years-long running joke, without ever attacking or insulting anybody at all.

Even after all these years, you still miss the joke, again, get outraged out of all proportion (again), and launch a cursing personal attack (again).

And I’m the *******? 🤣

You’ve brightened my morning. Thanks. 🙂

This^^^^^^^^^ - very well said and sound reasoning and expectations.

Now- for the thread and the bowl

1) Are we sure the MCB was going to take us if we beat Maryland- I am not so sure
2) Miami- They have a big name but seems they forget they have not been relevant outside of Covid since 2017. And this is with paying NIL for decades lol
3) Someone said we should feel blessed to be in a bowl after how we ended the season- Are you F-ing kidding me? Ended the season with OSU (7) @Iowa(17) @PSU(10) Maryland
4) And as I said earlier- we have our fans saying that Miami's losses came to tough opponents - so they are a good team. And yet- our losses to 1/7/10/17 and Wisc(with their starting QB) and Maryland just means we were lucky to get 6 wins.

I like the matchup and maybe the only way this bowl got interesting for me. I would still be happy regardless for the team players but the bowl does suck. But for once- that may work in our favor.

Yeah - not realistic to expect a better bowl this year. I don’t understand anyone being extremely disappointed. We’re playing a brand name - not a MAC team. Obviously we want to win, but a loss won’t be an embarrassment either. We showed a lot of progress across most positions this season. At some point, the Pin Stripe was going to pick us and we’d have to play there right? It runs until 2025. Better to get it over with in the year we’re 6-6.

It is kind of funny to see our fans in here point out Miami's losses and how they were to tough teams...And yet, our losses to 4 teams in the top 20 and two of them flirting with 1 & 2 all year...Are no excuse- horrible season for us. WTF???

Anyway- If we are playing PS Bowl- I like this game. It has intrigue.

Someone mentioned that Miami has a tendency not to show up for these types of bowls- I don't know if that is true or not but GS had 2 strengths during 1.0 - Building a program- and getting his teams ready for bowl games.
Playing in a cold NYC outdoor Bowl has a huge advantage for us as well.
I don't think most here were saying that we had a horrible season, instead we were disappointed in the finish. Personally, I was hoping we could just scratch out one more win which would've been a huge success. It turns out that it could have been vs. OSU if it wasn't for some untimely mistakes. Overall, though, the season was a success.

Rutgers was also one less blocked punt on a rainy day away from going 5-7 and not qualifying for the post season. There is no disappointment in celebrating the opportunity to play in the Pinstripe Bowl and for the first legitimate post season game since 2014.

As a fan who witnessed the Garden State Bowl in 1978 and then waited 27 years to cheer at the next appearance, I am happy to see them play after any regular season. That doesn't mean I don't want the best opportunity possible but that also doesn't mean trashing the opportunity Rutgers does have.

Okay but the other 5 wins were by 3+ scores so it’s not like we had a bunch of things go just right to make it happen. A lot of things went wrong to put us in a bad position to begin with in that one game.

Agree

When we discuss specific games after they are played and lament - only if this happened...it is just normal fan talk. But by the end of the year- you just have to take it for what it is. As they often say- you make your own luck.

To point out a lucky play that assisted us in winning- just isn't fair to the season. Same with a "if only"

We won 6 games. 4 of them P5 games, 1 a G5...We just don't like th Pinstripe bowl for many reason, but we also all know that this team played hard enough to earn a bowl this year no matter where it is and just leave it at that and be proud of what they did.

That’s about what it would take to get Miami fans to travel well….playing in the NC game.
People here talk about RU fair weather fans. Miami makes RU fans look cult-like. Heck, if I were a Miami fan living in Florida, there would be zero chance of me taking a trip to NYC in December to watch any bowl game.

Naaaaa…. If you feel 6 wins { thanks to a catastrophic 4th Qtr collapse by MSU} and his plans not to even try to upgrade a position where our QB is the worst passer in all of the FBS that’s fine. Let’s see where ‘24 and ‘25 go to. Hopefully Greg 2.0 will finally have beaten a team with a winning record. If we finish with 4 or perhaps 5 wins both seasons and you’re still happy…LMAO.

An excuse to visit NYC is probably more attractive to many folks in FL than to many folks in NJ. Because it's not an everyday thing, like it is for us.

Although, yeah, Yankee Stadium or the Bronx probably isn't high on most people's list of places to visit on their trip to NYC, unless they're Yankee fans.

Good post.

I'm overjoyed that the team made a bowl game this year. Might not have been a fun final stretch of the season, but the overall season represents a ton of progress.

If the team can replicate the progress it made between 2022 and 2023 for the upcoming season, the team might actually start to look pretty good. Not saying I expect it to happen, but the progress over last season was great.

As stated - we beat two bowl eligible teams (same number as in 2014 by the way). This season was a success and anyone complaining about it now isn’t being fair or realistic. A lot of things would’ve had to break our way for it to go better than it did.

On your QB point - it’s only a fair comment if we bring nobody in and simply expect Gavin to become good enough to lead us this off season. I don’t think that will happen. Greg has to know at this point there’s a chance Wimsatt just doesn’t “have it”. We’re not going to ante up the money for a proven star but I have to believe (at least I hope) when the bowl game ends we’ll be in the market for someone to compete with Gavin for the starting spot.

An interesting venn diagram would be the people who say both:

"FSU should be in. Undefeated is undefeated. Records should matter!"
and also say about Rutgers:
"We were 6-6 but need to examine how that 6-6 was made. Not all 6-6 are equal. We only beat NW and Temple and MSU etc".

Either records matter or they don't.
If FSU being 13-0 should trump any other record of who they played, 6-6 and making a bowl is still 6-6 and making a bowl regardless of who was played.

It's funny but how many other middle of the road P5 teams are beating Mich/OSU/Iowa/PSU in any given year. Mich/Iowa/PSU - all on the road.
