Missed FG, not going for FG

If we hit that field goal in first quarter and kicked the FG on 4th and 2 before the interception, game would have been 17-13 with 4 minutes to go in the third.

And if we kicked that FG instead of throwing the screen pass people would have complained about not playing to win. I personally liked going for it on 4th down.
I was surprised not to go for a 45 yd FG to bring us to one score.
A 45 and 51 yard field goal are no easy tasks for a college kicker.
He had the distance on the first one, just a bit wide left. He has a good leg. If we're down more than 10 go for it on 4th and 2. Otherwise, make it a 7 point game.

Agree. There are always fans who will ***** that the coaches should have passed when a 4th and two run does not work. Every school & every NFL team has those types of fans.

Our Kicker is not a guarantee
4 of 6 FGs this year.
Either three or seven make it a one score game. And the likelihood of making the FG for three was far greater than it was to march down field for seven--even IF you convert the 4th and 2. A first on 4th and 2 produces no points.

We didnt score for 59 minutes. We werent going to win even if playing the if game
but you still play to win and SHOW you have confidence.in your players
Giving up is a sign of accepting you're not good enough and having the team
feel the coaching staff gave up on them.

Getting three and making it a one score game is far more likely than getting seven and both produce a one-score game. Playing to win is about playing the odds, not about "I am A Man Man, hear me roar."

Your post is dummer. See how that works? Nothing dumb about @bac2therac 's post. You're just being a small man because you don't like him.
there are two sides and neither is dumb when disagreeing about try for the down or go for the 3
I disagree with bac saying go for the three and others wanting a FG try.
But I understand their reason of going for the points reather then gambling
you'll make the down against a team like Michigan.
I'd be an idiot to say anyone what wants to go for the 3 rather than gamble making a first down against a team like Michigan is dumb.
I stared what I feel and why , people might think I'm dumb for going for the down instead of the 3

oops might have misundestood what bac meant, but either way wanting going for 3 or trying for two yards isn't dumb , just a difference of opinion on a play

You play to win. Offense did jack squat for a quarter and a half. We were driving, down 10 on the road 4th and 2 you absolutely go for it. Good play call too, kid just made an All American level play at CB. What can you do...
Not completely against it but was surprised by it. Your point that we were moving it may have had Greg thinking this was our one shot at a TD

To me, it turned as early as the 27 yard run by Monangai being called back which would have put Rutgers at the 50 with a 7-0 lead already. Then they turn a 1 & 20 into a 3rd &4 and the same lineman gets called for an offsides. That sequence to me changed the course of the entire game. It was looking like at the very least a 10- 0 lead or at best 14-0 lead. The game turned and we never got back on track.

Unless I’m wrong Patel has missed 2 FG’s this season . Yesterday he missed from 51 ( which is his longest made in his frosh year) no disgrace and the 45-46 yard try from the left hash which clanked off the upright. The player has a great leg and can be a weapon down the road. The kicking expert doubting this kid has more than likely never kicked beyond Pop Warner. There are many factors which impacted the kicking game as some others have previously stated on the board.

I can see both arguments, but I go for the 45 yard FG attempt and try to make it 17-10. Going for it as opposed to kicking seems to be what a lot of college coaches are doing. Ohio State opted to go for it on 4th and goal from the ND 2 in the second quarter and and did not go for the easy FG. They were stopped.

We were lucky to even attempt the 51 yard FG.
Can't really count that as any type of "what if".
Without the penalty it's turnover on downs.

Just convert on the 4th and 2 and there’s no issue.

Terrible playcall with the screen
We're not a team with a good screen game. Even when we try a bubble screen or tunnel screen when it isn't 4th & 2 it is an adventure. Why on God's green earth would the playcall there ever be for a screen? "They'll never see it coming?". That play should be an automatic 3 yard gainer that the team practices so much they hate it.

But then you need to get 7 later. Go for it when you're moving the ball and have some momentum you're not necessarily going to have on future drives VS #2 team in the sport.

Weird thing to second guess, anyway. Not like that gives us the win or even ties it up. Great, we still need a touchdown we never got and to prevent them from scoring like we didn't do ....

I haven been praising the OC but the 4th n 2 call really baffles me. Have to let GW make a play with an RPO.

People saying go for a fg are seemingly forgetting after the 14 minute mark of the 1st quarter the offense was a failure and Michigan after being stopped on ther initial drive was converting evey time

I would have kicked the field goals. But those decisions is not why we lost.
We weren’t winning this game

How many points does the first down get you?
