Yeah, cause you know that Alabama St. and Jackson St. are always loaded with 5-Star talent...
Well, he didn't recruit well enough there to finish any better than 5th in the conference 6 out of 7 seasons. He didn't need to recruit 5 stars. That alone probably says he wasn't even the best recruiter in the SWAC. Again, it's all about hiring an unknown. Which is exactly what he is. Hard to believe we have to do that at UK.

I’ve literally saw people post that they hope we lose and tank. You can’t be serious.
Because they see it as the fastest way to get rid of mark pope, because again they don’t think he’s going to be successful here long term. I wish he would prove everyone wrong next year and make a final four or something. I would eat that crow. But based off his coaching record I don’t see it happening

So many illiterate fans. I bet none of these haters remember the tremendous contributions Rod Strickland made to the UK program working with our guards. Probably the most important assistant coach on staff.
An all NBA guard is so important to have on staff. Guards win in college.
Obviously can relate to young guys. I’m elated to have a have Mr Williams.
Rod Strickland was with Cal at Memphis, directing their basketball operations. When Memphis was winning 38 games. What qualifies Mo Williams? He played in the NBA?

Criteria for assessing assistants is different than that for head coaches. They are there for a narrow role.

What do we expect? Are we expecting to hire a hot midmajor coach to an assistant role? Those guys are looking for head coaching jobs.

Mark Fox did better at Nevada than a number of coaches we may clamor for did at their respective mid major. Many don’t even want him on the bench as an assistant.

Apparently I'm less jaded than some on here, but I'm optimistic about this and don't believe it was a situation where we hired the dad to get the player (or vice versa). My guess is they saw both Mo Williams and his son as viable candidates in their respective roles, and the possibility of getting both together was icing on top. If you just look at each in a vacuum they seem like good additions. A four-star skilled PG who is rising on recruiting boards. And a sitting college bball head coach who also happens to be a famous and relatively recent all-star level NBA guard. As always the proof is in the pudding but knowing only what we know I think this is a good move for the program.

Apples to oranges comparison. Was Parker an All Star?!
Who cares? What has Mo Williams done at the NCAA level to warrant being hired at UK? People told me Pope would be a dynamite recruiter at UK. He played under Pitino, and in the NBA, under Larry Bird, and he won a title. College recruits will be lining up. Nope. Jai Lucas was trash in the NBA, pretty good recruiter. But he had a proven record at Texas, before UK hired him. We can’t afford to take fliers on staff members, especially in a make or break year.

didnt we just let a guy walk who had a 9 year NBA career who was supposed to help in recruiting circles....
For starters, Jason Hart was a very middling player who no one remembers, whereas Mo Williams was an all-star, teammate of Lebron, and won a title. To the extent that stuff matters for an assistant coach and recruiter, Mo Williams clearly comes out on top in that comparison.

I dont know anything about this guy. So will reserve judgement.

The kid probably came here because he knew this was n the works. I'm no Pope fan so far but I doubt he would hire the coach to get some 4 star.

And that’s exactly what kids want to hear about now, they don’t care about the name on the front. They care about the numbers on the check
Everyone has money at the high major level. Kids still want to get recruited. Will Stein agrees. UK had a war chest last portal. We struck out on most of our top targets

Exactly this. Lmao Jason Hart being compared to Mo Williams is asinine at best.

UCONN in their 3rd final four in 5 years. Duke and UT coming off elite 8 runs. UK just lost 14 games and went out in the 2nd round, and our coach just said it’s better than Calipari’s last 4. And dudes in here wanna tell me, to shut up and take it, when Pope hires more under qualified guys like, Keegan Brown and Mo Williams. I’m not surprised, parasocial relationships are like this. We had guys arguing tooth and nail, that Sahvir Wheeler was the answer at PG.

I think an NBA all star is an upgrade over the dudes that left the staff. Will see if he moves the needle in any way -- results at JSU don't inspire much confidence. Was hoping we wouldn't need to burn an asst coach spot just for Mason, but again Mo can't be any worse than the guys who left -- those guys got 0 results.
