So to confirm, top 20 teams are not top tier, and 50 is no longer top 60?
Oh, did we beat Iowa? Did we even score on them? If you consider them top tier on par with Ohio State great--AND IT WAS A LOSS. And I'm sorry but a rank of 50 is hardly much better than 60. You're splitting hairs to try to portray the wins as better than they are. Wake me up when Schiano beats someone good enough to get real headlines. If he beats Penn State we can talk. If it's another loss, then it's another loss and you can spin it upwards somehow.
Fans like you need to be transported back to 1977, when Rutgers played (besides the yearly blowout to Pedd St.) Colgate, Bucknell, Princeton, Cornell, UConn, Lehigh, Wm. & Mary, Temple, Tulane, and Boston U.
Some of us were there and appreciate how far this program has come. Most college football fans I know never thought it was possible. I wasn't so sure about it myself.
BTW, you should hear what they say about RU ever competing for #1 with the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Michigan.
It kind of depends on whether you see the glass as half-full or half-empty. We are a lot better than we were 25 years ago or even five years ago. (1977 is so long ago I don't want to think about it.) We aren't where we want to be. It's important that we recognize both how far we've come -- and how far we have to go. It's an achievement to beat Indiana and Michigan State when you remember that we probably would have done neither during the Ash years. It's not an achievement to look so bad against Iowa. Iowa is a top 20 team, but at the least we should have come a lot closer to victory than we did. Our passing offense obviously needs a *lot* of help, but at least our offensive line is at a point where it can protect our QB; that wasn't true a few years ago. It is hard for fans to be patient, but we have to be ambitious, as you are, without forgetting that the team is making progress.
Gotta see it as 50/50.
If you lean too "half full," you'll end up disappointed. Every time.
If you lean "half empty," you might as well just find a different team. Because half empty is still much better than a couple years ago when that cup was dusty and bone dry.
I'm usually too optimistic, but have learned to approach with more of a "we'll see what happens." Season will come and go too fast either way so might as well enjoy what you can.

It depends on whether they see the game as it is played today or as it was played in 1977, and see potential that is or is not being realized, and see how other teams in similar situations do turning around, or not turning around. Our fans stuck in 1977 think college football still runs the way it did back then.
There are two types of people in this world: those who adjust and grow as the world around them changes, and those who are rigid and do not adjust. The latter often cannot grasp new paradigms and end up complaining about how everything is different and worse than when they were young.

I'm not entirely sure what you think has changed. Speaking as someone who was an adult in 1977, I can tell you that schools and their fan bases cared just as much about football success then as now. Nor do I think that ingredients for success have changed; what is needed is a good coaching staff to recruit and develop players, and a hell of a lot of money.
Already done it many, many, many, many times. Some don't get it. Fossilized minds. It's fine. I have a life. I don't live football or worship the coach or treat it like a silly religion with loyalty and purity tests or need success in my life vicariously through sports.
This is where you show to be an idiot. I have been pretty clear on where I have and had been on the Coach.
If you don't live football why are you constantly on a football board and complaining, arguing / picking fights, calling people cult members and narrow minded simply based on someone else having a different view than you about football? If you didn't live it, you wouldn't be hyper focused to the point of obsessive behavior on this board about Schiano and his shortcomings.

It is funny since he specifically pointed me out. 90% of the posters out here know exactly where I stand with the coach- I have no respect for him as 1.0 except for building the program. But as a HC/Person - there is a reason he felt the need to apologized to me and family upon his return as 2.0...I actually give him credit for doing so.
As 2.0 - I didn't want him back until I realized in Ash's final year, Ash tore everything down so much we almost needed a guy here who did it before. But, besides building the program again, I did not have much hope.
at the end of this year and before the season- it became a show me year. I was open that I did not feel 2.0 was getting it done on the field. To me, I was going to give him this year to pass the eyeball test that I could see something positive and hope for the future. And if not- get his *** out of here.
But something happened- the team, on the field, has passed the eyeball test. They are night and day apart from last year. I would not extend him at this point but I do think he has earned his stay.
So- for this guy to be calling me out- he is an idiot. And he has been around long enough to have already known my feelings on Coach.
He will now find something else but unlike him, I am always transparent.
Make sure you keep that same energy at the end of the month. This team isn’t night and day better that last year, it’s about the same with an easier early season schedule.
Last year the defense was fine, we had a reasonable running game and nightmare passing game… what’s different this year? Real talk what’s different besides benefitting from the easiest schedule we have and will see for a decade?
Need new glasses. The offensive line is light years better. We ran for 232 rushing yards against Ohio State. We destroyed teams in our winnable games. Monangai is playing on another level. Our kicker is kicking at around an 80% clip. This is a better team across the board and are going bowling, something you didn’t think was possible.
Al- it is sometimes to even try to be reasonable with these guys. If someone doesn't see the difference, I question their football IQ.
2021 - 12th in scoring and 11th in scoring defense 12th in YPG 11th in DYPG
2022- 13th in scoring and 13th in scoring defense 13th in YPG 8th in DYPG
2023 - 5th in scoring and 6th in scoring defense 11th in YPG 5th in YPG
I come to talk to the (rare) sensible ones. But I will defend myself against the childish personal attacks coming from weirdos who respond to criticism of the coach by attacking ME. They need to ask themselves why they feel so threatened by criticism of the millionaire coach that they feel the need to do this.
