Tiano over Virgil? I trust our staff, but Virgil has an offer sheet a mile long

Why would we pull his scholarship offer at this point? Seems like we'd try to keep a 4* QB.

The kid has a ton of options. Can't blame him. If we really offered gray shirt, then we were breaking up with him. No way we expected him to accept

If this is true, it's dumb as hell. This guy is about to get his 4th star across the board also.

Tiano is basically just like Fitzgerald minus the legs. Virgil has had over 40 touchdowns this year and still counting. Sorry, I don't agree with this decision.

Only reason I can think of is size. Virgil is a small guy vs Tiano, fitz, and staley

Our system requires someone who can take hits from SEC linebackers, so I would imagine that size is a pretty big factor. You can't coach 6'4"...

I realize this question makes no sense...hope the message was conveyed though

Did Mullen think that Virgil was going to magically grow after he committed to us in May? I know this is a business but this is a pretty ****** move by our staff. Especially when the kid expected to be on campus in a few weeks.

I've actually been thinking about this for a while now. Our system doesn't just require a running QB for full effectiveness, it requires a power-running QB. Can you image Virgil running the inside zone read? It would go about like Brandon Holloway running between the tackles. The playbook wouldn't have been Tyler Russell-limited, but it wouldn't have been far off.

Tiano was and is the #1 QB on our board and THE QB of the 2015 class. Virgil was a take as long as there existed the possibility of Dak leaving early, but since the chance of that became minuscule as of Saturday night, the staff did what they had to do and presented Virgil with his options. If anything, they did right by informing him as soon as it was clear what must be done, instead of stringing him along until he didn't have many options left.

This isn't true. Nobody thought Dak was going pro this whenever this guy committed back in the summer.

Bottom line is they took him while they could. When they committed Nick Tiano, they did not need Virgil. They kept him until they could not anymore. I expect that we are holding spots for higher rated recruits.

We have taken QBs in HS and turned them into slot guys..Lewis and Myles..

is it possible we were thinking this with Virgil? Only reason I can come up with to why we offered a 6-1 170 QB in the first place.

I'm not so sure it requires a power running QB. Obviously it runs well with Dak or Tebow but I think Manziel would do fine here.

Alex Smith, and the quarterback they had at Bowling Green. I don't think either of them were power runners. I think a quarterback that can pound the ball is just another asset that any coach would want, not just Dan Mullen.

Is that why we took Tiano 3 months after Virgil? and back in May when Virgil committed no one talked about Dak going pro. What the hell are you talking about?

I'll admit that's speculation on my part (should have said so in the first place), but there was absolutely the possibility of Dak leaving early recognized at that point in the summer. There were people on our boards talking about as early as after the Liberty Bowl, and Mullen and staff had to have known what they had in him at that point and that the potential for him to go pro existed with enough production and exposure this year.

Our staff actually evaluates players and doesn't just offer stars. Dan Mullen has said that a lot of players we rate as 5* only have 2 on the ratings sites, and a lot that have 5 on the ratings sites only get 3 from us. If he pulled an offer for someone else, that's all I need to know.

Three things:

1. So his recruitment was contingent on Dak going pro? Do you think that was part of the deal when he committed? Just curious, where was Dak projected to go in the draft when this young man committed?

2. So Dak's draft stock hinged on how he played in the Alabama game? Is that how the draft process works? If so, it seems the scouts could save a lot of time by just watching the big games on TV. No need in wasting time watching practice, holding work outs - that kind of silly stuff.

3. He is six weeks from enrolling in a school. He said tonight that he hasn't heard much from other schools since his commitment. I would say if the goal was to not string him along until he didn't have many options left, then MSU might have missed the mark on that one.

Didn't take long for Blevins to jump on the bandwagon too. Let's write a story based solely on twitter!!1!

I'm not on Twitter..too old for that bs. Virgil is a similar athlete to Nick Marshall and meant to say his stock was rising. I don't put stock in stars believe it or not. Tiano is big and has a nice arm but is a pocket passer.

It tells me that somebody unexpected at

A position of need has come to light. I
Don't like they way it has gone down and I'm sure Mullen doesn't either but
It is a business.

You should tell

Nick Marshall is bigger and is a better athlete. How is he the same?

I think it's his size and the log jam of talented QBs on the roster. Tiano was probably just the safer bet on who would stay if he got buried. Dan's probably a little gun shy after last season.

Marshall is a senior in college, Virgil is still in hs. I image that he would be over 200lbs by the time he started seeing the field. If he could be effective in Mullen's offense, his size difference would be negligible.

Seconded. I do trust Mullen in his recruiting methods but we sure did wait awful late to change our minds on Chason while his size has not changed and his numbers have been good. This is the prime example of why I have no issue with kids committing then taking other visits. If coaches have the ability to leave them high and dry like this then they should absolutely weigh their options until the last second.

Pretty cool that thf24 figured it out long before anyone else. Because you know that he/she had "actually been thinking about this for a while now".

It really puzzles me as to what some of you douchebags get out of being complete and total ******** without contributing anything to the discussion.

I have no inside information, but our coaches cannot explain why they did this. Is it possible that they had a good reason, not related to having too many quarterbacks committed?

Right. After enjoying the season we are having, I'm not going to question our recruiting methods or choices. Plus the recruit has a lot of options anyway. He will be fine.
