Well to say it’s been an odd summer is an understatement. It’s passed by so darn fast it has been hard to comprehend. Coaching changes galore, program dramas, forum arguments.. it’s needless to say it’s not been the most coy summer. In fact I just looked at myself in the mirror and said to myself:

“well.. how did it get here?”

Then I remembered; I got conference previews to do! So I said what the hey and took to the grindstone and got these two conferences done so I figured why not share it. I’m not gonna call them definite by any stretch because I sure ain’t Nostradamus or even that woman who used to be on Montel Williams. Granted previews in general have margins of error there is a chance something goes haywire and changes the look of everything. It’s a lot like life it’s unavoidable; and most importantly it’s not my problem. There’s nothing I can do about the fact team A gets a injury bug and Team F stays healthy. It’s just how it works. Each preview will be in seperate replies here to save room. They are intentionally long because that's how I roll so use caution.

Now in the words of the Penguin from Batman Returns:

“Gentleman, start you’re screaming!”

Mountain Valley 2A/1A:

Ah yes the glorious “ awful Wilkes conference,” as some of the mountain folks call it. You folks from there do realise it’s a 5 county conference right? Hell it’s a storied conference; it’s the 20th anniversary of the debut season this fall! I was all of 4 years old.. good times. :)

This conference has been fortunate as a billionaire’s son since 2013 to avoid re-alignment changes. Will that change in 2020? Who knows. It’s a story for another time. But as for now it looks like a interesting conference these next few seasons with a ton of stories involved. It could be possible everything will change by 2020. That’s an added feature of split conferences that make them unique.Anyways I’m just rambling.

This is my best educated guess of how it will go..

1.Wilkes Central(Hands down the most athletic team in the conference with potentially the most athletic RB in the area in Boles the Eagles have reason to be psyched. Defense has gotta keep improving and they gotta do something in their non con schedule to convince me but athleticism alone was enough to put em on top. For now anyways..)

2.East Wilkes (The dominating program the last couple of seasons in both levels will be still as solid this year. In the end it ended up being a tough pick for the top spot. East doesn’t have the horses to win a track race and if it comes down to that it won’t be good. However if East’s younger players transition well and they make it out of non con decently well they can make some noise even if they do get #2. I seen them at a 7 on 7 and they weren’t bad passing it but the run’s still #1. QB can chunk it and WR #1 has good hands. Defense has gotta be as stout as they have been.)

3. North Wilkes (This is a tough team to peg. They have the best ground and pound back in the whole conference and a big o line but their defense is suspect and the QB’s still relatively young. Injuries have got to be avoided and the QB has to stay away from the sophomore jinx or else they will fall down a notch or two. Their non conference slate doesn’t have West Caldwell on it so that’s a + for them.)

4. West Wilkes (They lost a ton of quality kids but the cupboard isn’t totally bare but it’s enough to knock them back some pegs. Their non-conference schedule is one of the easiest in the area so that’ll boost them early. But after that they will be dropped into Satan’s Alley with the first two weeks of conference play. We will see how they are after that. They could either surprise or bomb to 6th even. I say that the latter’s chance of happening is very low.)

5. Ashe County (It’s gonna be a transition year for the Huskies as they lost several long term seniors. However we 7 on 7’ed them last month and I was decently surprised with them more than I expected. QB has good poise and will be a project for them like the last 2 have been and they played very hard combined with being well coached on offense. Defense has got to improve though and the new kids got to transition properly. After they finish their murder’s row non conference schedule they will be battle tested and if they avoid injuries in mass it could help more against the lower schools and those who have had it easy. That’s why I mentioned West could dip perhaps. It’ll depend on a lot of different things though. They will be back in the thick of things here in a couple of years once the freshman class gets older. From the few players I seen off that class they looked decent.)

6. Starmount (I seen their lineman at the lineman challenge the other night and I was very surprised by them. They competed very hard, they were very stout, and had a lot of heart despite very low #’s. They only had 22 players listed on Max Preps as of now that could be a serious detriment in a worst case scenrio. They placed well too by the end. I expect that to be Starmount’s mantra this year. They gotta continue to improve and make the most of what they got but with the coaches they have they can suprise people if the cards of fate hand out well . Starmount’s just Starmount you can’t count them out.)

7/8: Alleghany/Elkin (This is truely the hardest places to peg in this conference. Both teams have a ton ? marks and have struggled recently. The question for me is who will make the most of it? Hence why I have a split here.

Alleghany quite simply is the biggest mystery in the conference due to the coaching change. The new coach is a mystery and one we know little about so time will tell if it will work out there. They guy has the experience to make into a HC but will he be the guy they need? The Trojans are in a unique position and they gotta make the most of it.

As for Elkin there’s nowhere to go but up for them. They have some athletic kids but numbers are very low. That’s just a fact of life for the Elks. Their lineman competed decently well at the challenge the other night and look stronger but can it transition to physical play well? I can’t say yet.

But on the bright side I do see the Elks getting a win this year; from the way their roster looked last year they have a ton of seniors and it might help them play harder in crunch time. Who will it be? I say more than likely it will come in conference play. The Elks always play Starmount hard but they have an understated rivalry with Alleghany dating back decades. Both present solid chances. Anything else will be a surprise.)

Northwest 1A:

One of the longest and more storied conferences in the state has definitely seen better days. Gone are the days just a decade ago of when it was a 1A powerhouse full of title contenders to what was once was a fun 2A/1A split at the end of the last decade. Now it’s a hodgepodge of school types and really a 2 team conference. The drama will rest largely on a rivalry game and if the lower expected schools overperform to what everyone expects. Hopefully in 2020 the state can make the conference more exciting; the NW deserves to be much better and interesting.

1/2: Mount Airy/East Surry (Baring a mass injury or bad luck bug for either squad it’s gonna be the same song and dance for more than likely the alignment. As long as both teams take care of business the conference will come down to their matchup at the end of the regular season. Besides that not much interest here.. move along.)

3. South Stokes (The move down and coaching change will do the Sauras some good. No offense to Hall as I feel South woulda played just as solid under him, but I already seen them this summer and they played just as hard for Holmes. Continuity will continue as a result of the change which is a blessing for a program with a late change. Beside their opener they have a competitive non conference slate which will give them great chances at wins before conference play. The defense quite simply has to improve it wasn’t good at all last year. They have some great JV kids who can contribute more to the defense but they gotta make the transition. I say in another year they could be very solid and a team to watch but 2017 has potential to be a fun season for the Sauras and the Walnut Cove faithful.)

Here is where things get more like the twilight zone. Before anyone uses voodoo to re-incarnate Rod Sterling I suggest hear me out first.

4. Bishop (Prep’s gonna be more athletic but Bishop has less ? marks as they are most established. Offense will be under the microscope with the air raid kids gone and the newcomers taking their spots. The defense last year was suspect at best especially against the run in a run friendly conference. I think both new coaches will be able to produce in the long run but they will need time to get the ground established. Bishop has a nice non conference schedule so they can get some W’s to boost confidence. Just less ? marks with this program.)

5.WS Prep (Besides MA this program has naturally the most athletic kids but there are a ton of ?’s that need to be answered. First of all will they have enough kids come out to field at least 1 team? #’s are a very legit issue they got to deal with that could halt the program all together. Either with kids in house or by transfers they gotta find some horses to take the lead and lead the program. Their new HC and probably staff will be young but there’s no better way to gain experience by taking the big Forsyth schools head on. They could very well surprise and get 4th if they get settled enough but right now I can’t say for sure. If they manage to field a JV team then that’s a great sign of health and stability but I’m not sure if they will.)

6.North Stokes (Ah yes the Vikings of Danbury. Well there’s nowhere else to go but up for em’. They got the coach they wanted; now it’s time to see what they can do.Last year they were very young and not very big which was a total contrast to 2015. Hopefully they hit the weight room as hard as they could and built some confidence. They will need it this year as they will have a lot of eyes on them. Sessoms made his intentions clear: “we intend to have 2 teams this year.” It’s hard to say how N Stokes will fare. Most wanna see a win but is it possible? Certainly but it’ll depend on them being able to make it happen. They couldn’t come close in 2016 but I say they got a chance to beat Patrick County at least maybe. Rivalry play can boost any program low or high it might do the trick. Worst case they can have a better season in regards to production, numbers, and stability despite not winning. 2014 they had a similar situation in fact. Just gotta wait and see. North Stokes is definitely a team to root for. Not for them to win a ton of games but to see the program continue in the face of armageddon.)

Well that’s it for both of the conference previews… for now. The WPAC will get one here before long I’m taking some time on purpose.

I do have some announcements. Firstly I intend to both launch a Twitter page and website covering the area more in depth. It won’t be a journalistic website or feed but I wanna expand my reach into new areas. It will be like how I do my posts but with some other things. However I won’t be going away I’ll still be here. Secondly I will be doing weekly picks for the 2017 thru the playoffs of all the area teams (except my own to discourage bias,) and I’ll do a BCS like poll each week or 2 weeks. I also kinda wanna do a poll thru my website but i’ll have to experiment with it.

As for the pick the winner game; just gotta wait and see. I do want it to continue but I may be willing to pass it off to someone who wants it. I just gotta think about it.

I’ll have more information about all of this by the end of July. I had original intentions to launch it and surprise anyone but things went loopy but I intend to have it going. When I have ideas I do them; just how I roll. Anyways I hope everyone enjoyed this. Feel free to contribute as you like.

Good breakdown.

I think people are really sleeping on East Wilkes and at this point they should be considered the favorite to win the MVAC. WC, while bringing back some key players, still lost quite a bit of production. However it seems every year, they reload at the RB position. I think they've had one of the best RBs in the area every single year.

East Wilkes returns the majority of their team. I don't count JV considering both of WC and EW jv teams were evenly matched and both had an abduance of underclassmen on varsity. EW also gets WC at home this season and will be looking for revenge.

For the NW1A, I'm going to make a bold prediction and pencil in East Surry as the champion with Mt. Airy a (very) close second. Everything else looks good. The East Wilkes - East Surry matchup on week one is going to tell us a lot. Battle of the Cardinals.

Slasher Killer : You did a great job on this. The Mount Airy News has sports writer jobs open at times and you are a shoe in for a sports writer. Of coarse you probably love what you do but you should give it some thought.

Where is the EW-ES game played?

East Surry for varsity, East Wilkes for JV. I wouldn't be suprised if it is GOW for WXII.

If I can get the chance I'll go to East Wilkes for the JV game as we are off for JV that week. It has as much drama behind it too. Two best JV programs of the last alignment in both conferences; EW has a 19/20 game winning streak on the line. If ES hadn't lost in OT they woulda had a 4/5 year streak on the line. Still a lot of drama there.

Woah that's a huge compliment thank you. :) That's how I format these things.

Not going to lie I've had a good deal of people tell me that over the years. I've been writing articles after varsity games since 2011 I just haven't posted them.I took journalism at Surry Community and it helped get my bug going. It's a big deal I haven't ever thought about it maybe I should. Only downside is that I can't get no pics on the sidelines like I'd wish I could. I much prefer the aerial view because it helps with stats better.

Worse case I'll do some on my new website. That's one thing I'm thinking about doing perhaps.

I agree; it really was a challenge to pick this conference. Funny story but I actually influenced another site's picker to put East 2nd he had NW ahead of them at first. I do think NW will be in the hunt though.

Our first 7 on 7 in June was vs. EW. I was impressed by them it was the first time I ever went to Ronda and seen that group in person (scrimmaged them in Adkins's early days but different group of kids,) and I liked what I saw. Very nice community there and it is a really beautiful area and stadium. They aren't a passing team by any stretch but I was impressed by their QB and #1 WR. Both have 3 years of experience and it shows. The QB in particular is the best QB I've seen at running option routes (they suprised us with some pitches instead of passes which was good practice.) WR #1 has good hands too. On defense they looked fine but I think they were missing kids and it hurt them at first. Later on against our younger kids they did better but I can't really judge it. I think by August they will be ready to go.

That non conference schedule they got has no breaks in it really. SC may be down but they are hard to prep for; same for Forbush. Walkertown will be a speed test and ES will be an all out war. That's a plus because last year they came out the gate badly. They can't do that this year and have a lot of wins.

I agree about WC. Their potential is the only real reason I gave them #1 or East woulda had it. I'm a huge Boles fan since his JV days and it's his time finally but he's gotta avoid the drama and come out ready to go. He showed flashes of his talent in what limited time he had last year so if he plays like that he'll be the next 1 year stud of an RB for WC. It's a shame though the kid has way more talent than that to be a 1 year wonder. Defense wise they gotta make up their mind what front they wanna run and dedicate to it. They will get tested solidly by A Central and Watauga so they will show their all rather quickly.

That's not a bad pick at all for the NW title. I've seen 2 who have said that so far. East is the more certain team out of the 2; MA has a lot of ? marks but raw potential. MA ultimatly will be faster in the skill spots but East will be classic East this year which is what makes them so tough. Ray will be the offense's star this year and will get it a ton. One plus for East is the non conference schedule. They got East Wilkes which has always been a fun series (I'm so glad they re-started it,) 4 rivalry games in a row, and Ragsdale for endowment. Given Ragsdale's HC situation and how it will go and transition it's possible East may compete even if they might not win.

However it can be a downside too. If they get a injury bug or just simply start out bad it could be harder go. Truly a test of spirits for the Cards. Also with MA's #'s looking smaller this could be the only game either side will have this year.

Just gotta wait and see with all these conferences. Gonna be a fun year though :)
