Nate Oats?

Do you think Rick Pitino loved our fans? Do you think Cal woke up every morning with his heart full for love of our fans? They’re getting paid millions of dollars to coach basketball. They don’t care about you or me. If they win and things are going good they can say we have the best fanbase, but reality is they’re just cashing checks and trying to win games.
No but I think it’s a consideration pre-hire

The Oats nonsense still running its course? LMAO

AI Overview

"Nate Oats gun"
refers to the controversy in early 2023 when Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats initially downplayed his star player Brandon Miller's involvement in bringing a gun used in a fatal shooting, later apologizing for his "wrong spot at the wrong time" The core issue was Oats' insensitive remarks regarding Miller providing the murder weapon to a teammate, though Miller wasn't charged, leading to criticism about the program's response to the tragic event.

I thought it was announced his contract is up in June? Having a new AD who is hungry and wanting to make a big splash with a great bball coach would be ideal if Pope doesn’t turn it around. It’ll also be easier to bring on a new coach if he knows who the AD is going to be. It’s just absolutely god awful timing to try and hire a new coach this offseason, especially since there’s no sure fire coach we want anyway.
If Mitch's contract is up in June, he won't be allowed to make the new hire. Allowing him to do so, would be the absolute dumbest thing the administration could do.

Also, you can't roll the dice on Pope for another season, just because the AD is going to retire. The basketball program at UK, is far too important to take such a massive risk on a guy that is obviously not qualified for the job.

How many good coaches do you think are just sitting around gushing about our fanbase? Take Billy Donovan for example. He literally had our fans chant slurs at one of his players during a game. Our fanbase has done some crazy stuff. Look how our fans treat Calipari that won a title and went to multiple final fours. I’d say none of them have a very high opinion of our fanbase

Understand why that would frustrate some fans, but he continues to get good recruits and the Miller situation hasn’t slowed him down. He’s still performing at a high level as a coach.

I don’t disagree. We can’t control what happened yesterday, only today. I don’t speak on behalf of a whole fanbase. I would prefer we reflect as a positive rather than a negative but I’m one idiot in a sea of people.

He's a garbage human being and will never coach at a University that I'm proud of. Enough already of the haggard looking drunk and overrated loser, but some can waste all the time chasing their tails about him as they want.

Fair enough.

If it doesn’t work with Pope (I genuinely hope it does), would you be okay with Pearl? If not, do you have a coach you’d like to see at the helm?

If you want to believe it, then believe it.
I don’t.
Give me a reason to not believe it. It’s obvious it was leaked and respected media members reported it. Then, Pope didn’t deny it as he had a smirk on his face. Why would I not believe it?

Look at how deep this team is, it's not hard to believe that number is correct, there are 12 guys on this team that can play good minutes. Oweh isn’t making chuump change and DA and Mo D didn’t leave Florida and Bama for less money.

You think Quaintance is going to take less that 2 million?

You can hit 22m really fast in this scenario.

Pearl paid his dues and would give it his all. For that, I tip my cap to him. But they would never hire him. I'm confident that the next hire if Pope doesn't work out after year 3 will be someone that is younger like our Football coach.....which was a homerun hire IMO.

And I don't think Pearl would even come here now as he doesn't want to play against his son, fight him in recruiting, etc..

No, you're wrong, you're the one telling others that they are wrong, so it is you're burden to prove that 22m number is wrong, or stfu. It’s that simple.

Yes, but would you be calling for him to be fired this year? He is 11-5 this year, the team does not look like a FF or even an E8 team.

You’re the one demanding it, show your proof that the number is false, or stfu.
You and your ilk are the ones that keep bringing that number up, so surely you have proof. I mean surely you are not just a lemming that believes everything you see on the internet right? So prove that number or stfu about it.

I saw where kyJeff1 finally told the truth and admitted he was the old ukjeff that went beyond insane on Cal. It was a 24 hour a day hobby. Craziest thing I've ever seen. He'll argue a point until whoever he's aguing with decide it's a waste of their time. He lied for quite some time and said he wasn't the same guy. I have him on ignore but keep seeing his posts quoted so I know he has various arguments going.

Alabama is ranked and has a legit chance to win the SEC. Their talent is far better and you better believe he wil be at least as talenred next year.

Again, you don't have a point.
You think they will be at least as talented next year to lose to every ranked team but one and start off 11-5. Well that is high praise.

Either way, Oats and Alabama have been a betrer program. They own us and he plays a better brand of basketball.
Also, it's not like they’re playing an easy schedule, theres a reason they are ranked 13th with 4 losses (5 now).

And yet when I say Pope had a good year last year considering the strength of schedule and all the injuries, I get told it was not a good year. But Bama gets a pass because of a strong schedule and no injuries???

Alabama is (1) game better than us this season. Yeah, (1). Even after a tumultuous stretch for us, they are (1) game better. They are the same as us at 1-2 in conference play.
I truly think a game against Alabama now would be different than last weeks game. It would be much closer and we might even win. We’ve changed some things defensively and it IS working much better. Let Oats keep shooting 40 3s per game. Win some by 25 then lose to Texas at home. Too sporadic to ever win a championship.

It wasn't a question about resources, it was a question about Oats having a bad year and UK fans being unrealistic. Part of that unrealistic mind set is that since we are UK we have more resources than anyone and a coach should never miss on talent and a coach should never have a bad season.
A light in the darkness...
People on here talk about the kids being "Mercenaries" out one side of their mouth, while claiming we should win, in part, due to our "tradition and brand image" with the other. IF the kids are Mercenaries then why the Hell would they care about tradition and brand? If you are a recruit, why would you sign a contract with UK when you can get nearly the same money somewhere else, without the conditions? And why would any coach with a good gig like UCONN or Bama are right now leave to come to a place that looks to fire you and go after your kids when you are 10-6 and racked with injuries? After a S16 first season. Answer...they wouldn't. The spoiled delusion of the fanbase is killing the program as much as MB is

I can assure you, I never said last year wasn’t a good year. In fact, given tge circumstances, Pope did an amazing job.

But, there were red flags that have carri3d over to this year in a big way.

1)Last year, his team kept getting behind early and had to play catch up. That's a serious lack of preperation.

2) Great one game, terrible the next

3) Rotating players and lineups like he does, works at Utah state, it doesn't work at this level and he's still doing it. Play your best dudes as much as needed together.

This year, I think he got overconfident in his offense and his abilities and he recruited dudes that don't fit his system. He thought his system was so good that he could get any guy to run it and that's just not true. Does he know that now? I'm not sure.

But, again, the job he did last year was impressive.

Look folks NIL has changed the game. We all know that UK, Duke, KU, UNC, before NIL bought the best players. Even your 2nd tier teams like U6 bought players, everyone bought players, but the blue bloods got to pick 1st. NIL has evened things out, do you think a player like DJ Dybantsa would have went to BYU pre-NIL, he would have been playing for one of the blue bloods. I am not saying that the name UK doesn't mean nothing, but money talks. I just think Pope should get a 3rd year to show that he can learn from his roster mistake this year. If next year doesn't show massive improvement then he just has to go.

I can agree, Pope is not perfect. I think this year he really thought he could put together a roster without at least one alpha and win. He was wrong, if given a 3rd year, he needs to pay up and get an alpha.

We had a Hall of Fame coach that we ran off without a back up plan. Most fans, including me, were absolutely certain an upgrade was going to be easy — Hurley is coming, Oats is coming….I took it for what it was —- things are different now. Coaching changes are more complicated than they’ve ever been, so I’d rather keeping coping with Pope, hoping with Pope —- whatever thing some will say and really hope Pope proves he’s the guy. That, as unlikely as it is, is the best case scenario.
This is why some of us weren’t sold on getting rid of Cal, but people threw out all nuance and accused of us being Cal lovers.

Personally I felt the chance of getting rid of him and rolling the dice with Mitch as the guy doing the hiring had a higher chance of failure than just waiting Cal out a few more years. And I always felt after the extra Covid year was over and players were normal college age again freshmen would return to being close to as effective as they used to be. Add in NIL which would keep guys like Chris Livingston in school another year and Cal didn’t sound that bad compared to a complete unknown hired by Mitch.

I think the Oats and Pearls of the world are pipe dreams and always will be.
