We'll see if this changes as it is being reported that Terry Smith is being retained by PSU in "a leadership position" and was part of the Campbell deal (I'm guessing some type of GM-equivalent role).
I could see Terry being in a similar role as under Franklin. He is too valuable as a recruiter to lose to an administrative spot. We need an experienced GM, not a coach playing a GM.

How about, “I’d like to introduce the next Coach for Penn State Football, Matt Campbell.”

Exactly, it's all water under the bridge now.... old and irrelevant news/gossip..... the only thing that matters now is that Matt Campbell is the new Head Coach at The Pennsylvania State University.

Terrible process, terrific result.

It happens. In a couple months, nobody will care about the process if Campbell brings his players/recruits on board and has the team humming.
Krafty is going to sleep tonight for the first time in probably a week. I can just imagine the pressure he was under after he was bested by the cookie guy and then he had the big donors, Adidas, letterman, alumni, etc all calling for his head.

Not really. Plenty of fans don't even want a bowl game. Coaches don't even stick around for the bowl games. It is a joke.

Who is coaching the game? The new coach or the coaches getting fired?
They may not care about the actual game, but the extra practices can be very important assessment for the new staff. Regardless of who coaches the game (guessing it’ll be TS), Campbell should be able to get a jump start on next year and help decide who he wants to keep.

Landon Tengwell said the ISU DC has been with Campbell since 2016 and favors (actually one of the innovators) the 3-3-5. Not sure that is a good defense for the B1G. The ISU OC has been calling plays there for two years. I didn't get the details on his scheme as there were lots of people talking around me.
That's one of my question marks as well, can the 3-3-5 work in the Big 10? I remember when Rich Rodriguez tried that at UM and it failed.

Life long PSU fan (Tunkhannock native) and Iowa state grad here (I stayed out here after graduation).
He’s everything BGJ wasn’t!!! Coach has class and owns up to his responsibilities.
3 stars players that play with 5 star intensity!! I’m loving the hire as he’ll fit perfect at Penn State😊. I’m hating the hire because Iowa state is losing a great man.
BEAT THE HAWKS.
ISU and PSU when in comes to hating the Hawkeyes

As I said above:
That works as well. My response was to the OP who talked about a reporter asking Campbell how it feels to be the 9th or 10th choice. (paraphrasing the OP)
Yeah, it is no big deal. There are lots of times the first choices turn down jobs and it works out.
In the movies this happens a lot. (Tom Hanks was not the first choice for Forest Gump, John Travolta was. There are other examples)

Understood. I’d just answer, we got our guy, next question. The media is nobody’s friend except people trying to cause trouble, the media loves people who use them to screw others. Very cowardly stuff. Never talk to media.

I tried to find an answer to that but wasn’t able to do so. Can recruits who just signed a letter of intent on Wednesday enter the portal on January 2nd? For example could Sieg come back to Penn State via the portal next month if he wanted to do so?
My understanding is yes they can. This was talked about on one of the podcasts, maybe Tengwall or Obligatory.

With the staff salary pool, I hope Campbell takes full advantage and tries to get the best coaching staff he can, and not just import the ISU staff and give them big raises. He should be looking for the best OC, Wr, OL coaches available, and they don’t even need to be available, poach the best assistants wherever they are.

He should definitely bring in his WR coach Pauley? Guy was WR coach of year inn2024

Word around was that Kraft had given Franklin the go ahead to spend big money in the portal on players but Franklin believed more in taking care of his own guys by the $500,,000 each to Deluca and Clifford. Honestly I believe the money was there for Franklin to use but he didn't want to use NIL and the portal that way. Soo while other programs were throwing top dollar at recruits and portal players , Franklin was paying his current roster guys the money regardless of their on field contributions.
This tracks - when asked about NIL investment philosophy this past offseason, I remember Franklin hammering the theme of “retention” rather than “recruitment”, which at the time I thought meant going to seniors who really contributed (DDS, Durant, etc). If he was also giving big tranches to guys like Clifford and Deluca, that’s just fiduciary malfeasance, but it’s also not surprising. As we saw with Drew, he wasn’t and hasn’t been the best QB on our roster for years. He hit his ceiling early due to his happy feet. Levis, Pribula, Grunk were all better options but BGJ was so damned determined and stubborn to prove that he was right about Allar, making it incapable for him to give someone else the chance they deserved. Hubris, disguised as loyalty was a recurring theme of his tenure.

I believe they can. They aren't enrolled in the school yet, but I dont see why they are different than any other player.

Plus isn't there a separate portal window during coaching changes? They should at least be eligible to portal during that period.
There is one for coaching changes, but the guys who just signed elsewhere arent necessarily part of that unless their coach quits, like with Camlbell.

Don't be surprised if Knowles is retained and they stay 4-2-5.

I think they might stay 4-2-5 even if he isn't retained. Campbell and his staff will have players to run it they never had at Iowa State, and IMO his evolution to 3-3-5 was as much about fitting the defense to the kind of kids he had access to as much as anything.

If you look at their depth chart, they ran the 4-2-5 this year. I had a big nose tackle and another defensive tackle with only two linebackers listed. Hopefully Campbell brings the middle linebacker and at least two of the DL because that was a strength of their team.

Im kind of shocked by this really. I didn't think he could stay at this point.
Perhaps the animosity between TS and any particular BOT member(s), AD, etc have been overblown? Perhaps there is nothing there…completely void of drama. I know that seems strange here considering not a single soul on this board is ever hyperbolic in any way/shape/form.

Yeah, good point.

He based out of a 3-3 but he wasn't against attaching to a 4-3. I remember a game I studied a LONG time ago (bowl game against Memphis) where Memphis spent a lot of time in 2 tight early to try to fold them in 3-3. After a play or two they adjusted to what amounted to a standard 4-4 over (and went true 3-4 with the Safety attached in the fit at times).

Since then, and maybe he has changed/evolved much more, but I have always seen them as a "whatever we need to do to combat what the other team does well we will do" system.

That would be a stunner, because Heacock has been with Campbell for so long, and I can’t imagine Campbell coming in without his top lieutenant to at least get things started.
